Pros news

I am sorry if you missed my newsletter last week but Yvonne and I managed to get away for a few days to go and see my sister in Ludlow, Shropshire. What a lovely part of the country it is too. Even drove through a village called Stretton!!!

Last week's newsletter was a generic one sent out by Foremost with us been away. Bit of a strange one relating bald tyres to your golf grips but before the season kicks off please make sure your grips are ok. It is in the end the only contact you have with your clubs. If you are not sure bring your clubs into the shop and we can check them for you. It only takes a couple of minutes

Well it is the time of year when new stock starts arriving. Have you all seen the new PING fitting stand. Just irons at the moment but the woods are due in shortly.

Please if you would like a fitting or to try an iron let us know.

PING will also be coming to do a fitting day when they will bring all there clubs. The date is April 12th and they will be here from 10 until 2.

Also due in over the next month will be Callaway and Titleist clubs and all the summer stock of gents and ladies clothing.

To make sure you don't miss out make sure you pop into the shop every time you play or keep an eye on the website www.wrightgolfshop.co.uk

STRANGE PLACE TO HIT IT AT HORNSEA

So I only had one person guess the player and hole two weeks ago. I did expect him to get it right as it was him!! Well done Joe Palmer. The hole was the 3rd.

As a change this week I would like you to send me pictures that you have taken on the golf course here at Hornsea. I have included a couple here. Can you do better? Any good ones will possibly be used on the clubs website.

PITCH MARKS

Yet again I have been asked to mention pitch marks. Everybody insists they do them but we still have a major problem here at Hornsea. At the moment we have very few visitors playing, it is mainly members at this time of year. Everyday somebody complains to me about the amount of pitch marks on the greens. Please when you play try to repair at least one per green even if it might not be yours. The more that you repair others might start doing the same. As you are playing if you see someone not repairing them tell them. As I have said before it is your course. Please help to look after it.

Repairing Pitch Marks

1. Use a ball mark repair tool (available from the pro shop) whenever possible.
2. Insert the repair tool at the edge of the pitch mark. Do NOT insert the tool within the depression itself. 3. Push the tool forward from the edge of the pitch mark toward the centre. Do this around the edges of the indentation.
4. Do NOT insert the tool under the indented area and push up - a common mistake. Think of it as pushing turf in from the edges toward the centre.
5. Tap down the repaired area with your putter so that the surface is even.

Tips:

1. If your pitch mark has actually displaced a piece of turf, do not replace it. Just work around the edges with your repair tool as normal. Any replaced turf will simply die, delaying the healing process.
2. Pushing the tines of your repair tool under the indented area and pushing up only damages the root system.
3. You should not only always repair your pitch marks, but, time permitting, you should repair any other ball marks you see, too.

KNOCKOUT COMPETITIONS

As I mentioned before the knockout entries are now open and you can either print of a form from the link here or use one of the sheets in the clubhouse. Closing date for entries is the 18th March.

GENTS HULL AND DISTRICT ASSOCIATION

Last week's Hull and District at Beverley was postponed due to all the rain the day before and will be played today. I shall put a report up next week.

EAST RIDING ALLIANCE

Yesterday saw the East Riding Alliance at Filey. Yet another great day for team Hornsea it was too. A 65 from Steve Uzzell and Mark Cooke was leading for a good part of the day on the last 9 from a few others on 65. Adrian Rossindale and Sam Middleton shot a 67 which meant Hornsea had two great team scores in. Teeing off at 12.54 with little chance of getting round was myself and Nathan. We did get round finishing in the dark and it was freezing!! We managed a 65 also and when we finished were told we had won it overall on the last 6 holes. Can you imagine our disappointment when the organiser came across just before the presentation and told me he had got it wrong. A pair from Brough also with 65 had a back 9 which was one better than ours. Such a shame as it would have been great to win with Nathan. Next time it will have to be. The great news though is that Hornsea are now 14 clear with one event remaining on March 9th at Driffield. It would be great if we could have some Hornsea members cheering us on.

HORNSEA 150

As mentioned a few weeks ago Leigh Gawley and Joe Palmer on June 24th will be attempting to play 150 holes in one day. Joe has done this report which you will also see around the clubhouse. Please support them in anyway you can.

Following the success of last year's "Hornsea100" challenge, we have decided to push ourselves one step further (or 50 holes further in fact), by attempting to play 150 holes in a day!

In 2015, we joined forces with Chris Wilson, and together, supported by family, friends and Hornsea GC members we raised a staggering £3,000 for Dove House Hospice and children's charity Barnardo's. When we initially set out we had hoped to raise about £500 so as you can imagine we were blown away by the generosity of you all. Thank you once again!

This summer we (Joe & Leigh) are putting our bodies on the line by trying to complete the gruelling 8 and a bit rounds in the daylight hours of Friday 24 th June. We have decided this year to team up with Craig & Caroline's Captain's charity "CRY" who raise awareness of cardiac risk in the young.

Many of you will be aware and have been touched by the story of Hornsea School pupil Josh Fell, who in 2011, tragically died aged 15 whilst playing football with his friends from Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS). Having recently met up with the Fell family, Josh's parents Richard & Donna have been overwhelmed by the support Hornsea GC will be providing throughout 2016.

Richard has already made good progress with his media connections to help spread the word of our challenge which in turn will also hopefully raise the profile of the golf club. To date we have featured in the Hornsea Gazette, have a video interview lined up with Estuary TV as well as interviews with the Hull Daily Mail, The Journal and The Yorkshire Post in the offing.

To put our challenge into context, the 8 and a bit rounds will see us cover circa 40 miles on foot, whilst hitting the ball about 700 times (Leigh probably a lot less). We will be teeing off at 4am and aim to be finished well before dark at around 9pm. Those 17 hours will mean each hole will need to be completed in less than 7 minutes average. As you can therefore imagine, there will be very little time to stop and rest so we are calling on the members to support by cheering us on, walking a few holes, taking photos, caddying, or by bringing us the occasional sandwich or Pizza (Joe's favourite) whilst we slog it round!

Friday 24 th June is still someway off, so we will be quietly going about our business over the next 2 to 3 months, but if you see us about and can help in anyway, please let us know or speak to Stretton. For those of you who are fans of Twitter, please give us a follow @hornsea150 and like / retweet our posts to spread awareness, it's all a bit of light-hearted fun really.

Our fundraising page can be found at; www.justgiving.com/joshfellhornsea150 and all donations will go towards paying for crucial Heart Screenings which will be taking place at Hornsea Secondary School on May 14th & 15th.

To book yourself in for a screening you need to be aged 14-35 visit www.testmyheart.org.uk.

Thanks again and we look forward to your support!

GREENS

Those that have played will have noticed that work to remove the remaining Leylandii trees on the 7th tee is nearing completion. What a difference it makes too with so much more light been able to get to the 7th tee. This really will help the grass on that tee. Unfortunately the few pine trees that were among the leylandii are not looking too good with them not getting any light so these might well have to be removed also. The plan is to plant some pine trees and hawthorns where the trees have been removed. All the trees should hopefully be down by the end of this week.

It is still so wet out on the course it is making it difficult to get much grass cutting done. All the tee banks though have been cut with a flymo and on Monday the greens were cut with the hand mowers. If you see some larger cores taken from some of the greens this is due to soil samples been taken and sent for analysis. A small amount of tree thinning has also been done in the trees to the right hand side of the 6th.

THE COMPRESSOR

Those of you that have played over the last few weeks might have noticed that the compressor near the 18th green has not been working every day. Now it is a bit of a strange one as it works perfectly well when it is taken back to where we got it from and also works fine in the greens sheds. Now the latest thing is that it could be the cold temperature that is affecting it. We are looking into how to solve this problem. If you don't believe me please read the following.
