PROFESSIONAL SHOP

Well this week's newsletter is going to start with one of the keenest golfers I have ever seen. On Saturday afternoon Stuart Pearson brought his 18 month old son James up to the Golf Club.

Well you all know that I am always keen to get people golfing so I went into the back shop and found the smallest club we have got (it was still miles to long) and gave it to James.

Well his little face lit up and that was it. He just wanted to be out hitting balls. Definitely a future Club Champion in the making. Now it was freezing cold but he would have stayed out for hours. He has already got a better swing than his Dad!!!!

Last Thursday my new clubs arrived from Callaway. For those that might be interested this is what will now be in my bag.

Driver - Callaway Big Bertha Alpha 816 10.5 degree, Aldila Rogue stiff shaft
3 Wood - Callaway Big Bertha Alpha 816 14 degree, Aldila Rogue stiff shaft
Hybrid - Callaway Apex 2 18 degree, Aldila RIP stiff shaft
Irons - 4 to PW Callaway Apex Pro, Project X PXi 6.0 shafts
Wedges - Callaway MD3 milled 50, 54, 58 degree, Project X PXi 6.0 shafts
Putter - Odyssey Works 2 Ball Fang.
Ball - Callaway Chrome Soft

Having used them a couple of times they feel great and I am looking forward to some good golf this year. It really does amaze me how each year golf clubs improve so much.

If you are using clubs that are a good few years old and you are struggling you really should have a go with some of our demo clubs. I'm sure it will make a difference for you.

Now it does not happen very often but Yvonne has made a slight mistake on the subscription notices that are now available. The due date should be April 1st not February 9th!! She has been having sleepless nights over this so the less said about it the better!!

SNOW IN HORNSEA

Yesterday saw a very wet start to the day followed by about an hour of really quite heavy snow.

One member, Darren Reeve, made the most of it though by practicing his skiing technique in his back garden.

I'd stick to golf Darren although that is a much better posture than you use whilst golfing!!

PICS FROM THE COURSE

Well I must say other than one person, Sue Howell, I am a little disappointed as I really thought I would have lots of you sending me pictures from the course. Surely we have some budding photographers out there? These are what Sue sent me. Can any of you do any better?

DIVOT BAGS

I appreciate that over the last few months many more of you have been carrying but can I please encourage those that do take a trolley to start using the divot bags again. It was noticeable that last weekend hardly any of the bags were taken.

It really did make a big difference to the course last year so please try and do your bit.

LONDON MARATHON
Marathon 'feat' by Lady Captain Lady Captain

Caroline Barker is embarking on one of the greatest challenges of her life next month. Caroline a seasoned runner is taking on the challenge of our Capital city and running the London marathon.

She has been training hard and last year finished 1st in her age group in Hull.

Our Lady Captain is hoping to achieve a Personal Best in this iconic marathon but like Joe Palmer and Lee Gawley, who are challenging themselves to 150 holes in a day, the main aim is to raise money for the this year's nominated club charity CRY .

If you would like to support Caroline by donating to this very important cause please click here or see Stret or Caroline

SENIORS PRESENTATION AND DINNER

On Saturday night Yvonne and I were kindly invited to attend the Seniors dinner and presentation.

What a great night it was too with great food, super company and some truly memorable speeches.

I am still wondering if Keith Parry made it home in one piece. He is a much braver man than me!!!

Can I just give a huge thanks to the Seniors section for inviting us and making us so welcome.

SENIORS SECTION

Whilst at the dinner Malcom asked me to remind you all that the first Seniors match of the season is nearly upon us. It is an away game against Beverley on the 14th March. Good luck.

KNOCKOUT COMPETITIONS

As I mentioned before the knockout entries are now open and you can either print of a form from the link here or use one of the sheets in the clubhouse. Closing date for entries is the 18th March.

GENTS HULL AND DISTRICT ASSOCIATION

Last Thursday saw the Hull and District gents winter alliance held at Beverley. It wasn't quite what Hornsea was after as both Hull and Hessle closed the gap on us with two events remaining. The best score from Hornsea was a 64 from myself and Nathan. 61 was the best score of the day from a Beverley pair but it was a 62 from Hessle and a 63 from Hull which leaves both those clubs just 2 shots behind us with the final two events, here (playing today) and Hull to be played. Come on team Hornsea!!

EAST RIDING ALLIANCE

Next Wednesday 9th March will see the final event in the Hull Daily Mail Bowl. Hornsea are 14 shots clear and have one hand on the trophy. We just need a strong finish at Driffield. The team we have out to try and finish the job is, Adrian Rosindale & Sam Middleton, Myself & Nathan Wright and Rees Brown & Mark Cooke. It would be great to see some members cheering us on or by being at the presentation.

HORNSEA PAR 3 COMP

Now it is not long until "The Masters" will be with us and I'm sure we will all be looking forward to it. One of the highlights of that event is the Par 3 competition they have. With that in mind our Club Captain Craig has had a great idea to try something a little different at Hornsea. On Sunday 10th of April it is in the fixtures that we are having a shotgun Am Am. Well that has now been changed as we will be having our very own Individual Par 3 Competition, instead of the Am Am, with a very smart jacket up for the winner. Please put this date in your diary as I'm sure it will be a fantastic event. There will be prizes for both gents and ladies and Gareth is already planning on where to put the tees and position the flags. I shall have more details in a few weeks.

KITCHEN UNITS

As yet I have not had anyone coming forward with any kitchen units to help us improve the halfway house. Please if you are replacing your kitchen and you might have some units that could be re used can you let us know in the shop.

CLUBHOUSE FUNCTIONS

The Club Dinner Dance this year will be held this year on 12th March. Please book behind the bar.

Greens News - March 2016

The early part of the month did see the completion of the bunkers. With these works finished we were able to do some tree management. The intention was to increase light and air movement through the woodland between the 9th and 13th fairways. Because of the extensive tree cover the 13th fairway sees little or no direct sunlight for most of the year. With this in mind, we commenced trimming of dead wood, thinned and raised the crowns. Several trees were removed to improve the health of existing trees. This is by no means a completed work and in time further removal will be required. One of my concerns is the proliferation of poplar and evergreen oaks. Issues include size and proximity to the fairway, excessive leaf fall in the autumn and surface rooting.

More recently, the greens have been microtined with 8mm tines to a depth of 150mm. The benefits of aeration are clearly visible as the previous tine holes are evident from the stimulated growth caused by increased air to the rootzone. Weather permitting we will spray the greens with a tonic seaweed and iron to improve health and colour. We have also taken soil samples to get a current analysis of the greens health. Grass coverage has been excellent through the winter and have stayed firm even with the wet conditions. Pitch marks though are still a problem!! However with the unusual weather this winter, growth has been constant and consequently the turf hasn't gone into dormancy. This in turn will have depleted available nutrients in the soil. With maintenance fast approaching the first granular feed will be applied.

Once again with the wet weather it has proven very difficult to maintain the outfield. We have been able to flymo and edge the bunkers and handcut the tee banks. As soon as possible we will cut tees and fairways.

Finally it has been discussed at length within the management team about the use of buggies. At times it has been perfectly reasonable to allow the use of buggies. But it is down to the individual to observe and avoid low lying wet areas. There has been considerable damage caused by not adhering to requested travel routes. I was also disgusted to see that a buggy had been driven onto newly laid turf and a 180° turn had been completed. Very frustrating indeed when GUR signs and white lines are clearly visible. If this continues then a more harsh view of buggy use through the winter months will be given.

Rainfall - February 2016 - 50.5mm
