Hello and welcome to this weeks newsletter,

Can I just say it is lovely to see golfers back on the course and popping in to see us after what can only be described as a very quiet couple of weeks!! Let's hope that is the end of all the rain and we can now all enjoy a nice Spring.

Golf CareGolf Insurance

Have you all got golf insurance? It scares me how many people play golf without it. For very little cost per year you could get yourself fully covered. Please think about it and act now if you aren't covered. There is 30% discount at the moment for new customers and annual cover costs from only £22.99. Please look at the link or pick a leaflet up from the shop or clubhouse.

Captain pro challenge

Captain's Challenge

Darren and KevinThis Sunday saw the first Captains Challenge of the year with Craig and myself challenged by Kevin Taylor and Darren Jefferson. It was not quite the start to the season we were after. One game and one loss, so we won't be staying unbeaten this year!

It was a great game though with it all going down to the last putt on the final green and no matter how much banter I tried, Darren calmly rolled in a good putt for a 4 nett 3 to beat us 1 up. This was after Kev had holed one of the longest putts I have ever seen on the 16th too!

Can I thank them both for a great game and also for making a very generous donation to the Captains Charity even though they won. Well played boys. Not sure your 23 handicaps will last for long. 6 under better ball off a 90% handicap for 15 holes was not a bad effort!

Captains news

London Marathon

Our Lady Captain Caroline is now in full training with only 34 days left until she will be running the London Marathon. I even saw her on Tuesday morning at 6.50am as I was going to the gym out running. She was at the club not long after playing golf!

If you would like to support Caroline by donating to this very important cause please go to...

Competition news

Knockout Competitions

So have you all got your entries in for the knockouts? This weekend will be your last chance to enter as entries will close on Sunday. That is giving you all an extra weekend with the weather being so bad some of you might not have even managed to get up to the club.

Gents Hull and District Association

After the disappointment of our home fixture getting cancelled, due to the weather, today we carry a 2 shot lead into the final event at Hull Golf Club. I have picked a strong team so let's hope I am reporting on a win for Hornsea this time next week. It will be tough though as we have two clubs that will be trying to reel us in. Both Hessle and Hull are two shots behind us and I have heard they are both putting out very strong teams.

East Riding Alliance

Ok so those who know me will know I am highly competitive and love to win. With that in mind I'm keeping this short! Hornsea held a 14 shot lead going into the final game of the season at Driffield yesterday. Many people would think that lead was more than enough. Well unfortunately I'm sad to report it wasn't. Needing 2 scores to count Hornsea managed a 68 from Ady Rosindale and Mark Cooke and a 72 from myself and Nathan. Not bad scores but Hessle pulled something special out of the bag with a 66 and a wait for it 59! That was enough to beat us by one clear shot. Please don't speak to me about this as I am gutted!

Competition Results

Click here to see the latest competition results including a great weekend for young Will Marshall. 2 great scores considering we only had 15 holes open and 3 holes playing much shorter.

Tuesday 15th March - Lady Captain v Lady Vice Captain

Match Final score was a win for the Lady Vice Captains team 10 games to 4.

Tuesday ClubTuesday Club

Well summer must be on its way as I do like it when I have to mention the Tuesday Club is nearly back with us. This year it starts on Tuesday 5th April and runs until Tuesday 27th September. That is plenty of weeks (26) to get 10 stableford scores in. Please see click here for a larger version of the poster.

Hornsea Par 3 Competition

The sheet is now available for Hornsea's first ever Par 3 competition. Have you got what it takes to take home the Hornsea Jacket on the same day as the Masters Jacket will be presented? It is outside the shop and it would be great to see a full start sheet. Gareth has some great ideas to make 18 interesting Par 3 holes. There will be prizes for gents and ladies. It is a 9am shotgun start on Sunday 10th April and the presentation will take place as soon as the last cards are checked.

Upcoming Competitions

Saturday 19th March - March Stableford
Sunday 20th March - Individual Stableford inc Mark Hurn Qualifier
Tuesday 22nd March - Ladies Medal

Club news

Kitchen Units

I still haven't had anyone come forward with any old kitchen units to help to update the halfway house. Please if you have anything can you let us know in the shop.

Clubhouse Functions

Saturday night saw the Annual Club Dinner Dance and what a great event it was too with everyone enjoying a great night. Some more than others!! If you have never attended a night at the club you really are missing some great and memorable events.

On Saturday the entertainment was by a girl called Jenna who at one time had everyone that was in the room up dancing. I unfortunately did not get a picture of that as Yvonne had even managed to drag me up!!

Course news

Trollies

Well after what can only be described as a wet end to February and the start of March, Gareth and his team did everything possible to get the course playable again. It was still very wet last weekend though and despite a note outside the shop, on Twitter, on the website and on the start sheet is was amazing how many people still took trollies, large bags and a full set of clubs.

You had all been asked to carry if you could and if not, to use a trolley with a small bag and half a set. This was to try and protect your course as it was still wet and clearly some really do not care. With only 15 holes open and 3 holes played shorter did you really need a full set?

AlfiePlease in future when it is so wet if you must take a trolley think about the damage you are making. Can I thank all those that did make an effort to carry their clubs. It was noticeable how many of our senior members that are 70+, some nearly 80, carried and even Alfie Anderson made the effort to carry and his bag is nearly as big as him.

Just so you all know, most local clubs whilst it has been so wet, have had full trolley bans or only allow people with a full recent medical certificate to use them. This is not something we want to introduce here but it could happen if some of you insist in still taking trollies when you could clearly carry. The other option is the course will be closed more often which spoils it for those that do carry.

Please think and don't spoil it for the rest. I really hope though that we have seen the back of all the rain and things start to dry up now.

Maintenance Week

Maintenance week, began with coring the approaches (22mm hollow tines). To follow, top dressing with straight sand with a view to improving the soil profile. The aim being to make the approaches more like the greens. With weather conditions being poor recently and night time temperatures being inadequate for rapid recovery aeration to the greens will be less disruptive. The greens have been verti cut which will allow more sand at the surface. Following a light dressing (2kg/m2) the greens will be solid tined with 12mm tines. The remaining sand will be brushed in to the holes. On completion we shall use 8mm tines to help close up the holes and aid recovery. A liquid application of seaweed and iron will follow. Gareth

Now we all need the sun to shine to help aid recovery. Can you all please be patient whilst this happens. It is quite interesting for those that follow social media that nearly every golf course is at the moment doing greens maintenance.

After a few problems with the weather and machinery breaking down a few things have changed from what Gareth originally sent me. I'm adding this last minute and don't know the full details of what was done as this is sent but I shall include a full report next week.

Members news

Mystery MemberPictures from the course

Surely you must take pictures when you play. With all these modern phones etc now I thought I would have been inundated with pictures. That is not the case though so I shall give up on this little piece in the newsletter. I bet I get loads this week now!!! I have got a great one though of one of our lady members making a quick exit from the clubhouse following the Dinner Dance. I guess she must have been jogging home!!

Anyone guess who it is? Answers on a postcard OR click here to submit your answer.
