Pros news

Good afternoon,

Today's newsletter is with you all one day earlier than usual as I don't want you to miss out on entering this year's "Fantasy Race to Dubai" competition.

This is free to enter and there are some great prizes up for grabs. I did it last year along with a number of other members and it really did make following the European Tour much more interesting.

It also created quite a bit of banter between those involved. To enter go on the European Tour website, or follow the below link.
https://fantasyrace.europeantour.com/

Once you have logged on if you want to join the Hornsea Golf Club league you will need the following code. DCevjVOJIT, I will then be able to add you to our league. Just follow what it tells you to do. You don't have to be a member of Hornsea to enter our league. The more that enters the better. The first event starts this Thursday with The Masters so don't delay. Do it today.

So talking of "The Masters" what a great event it is to get us all in the golfing spirit for 2016. Big question though is who will be putting on the green jacket on Sunday night? Hard to see past Jason Day the way he has played in the last few months but I'm going for Phil Mickelson as he is playing well but just needs his putter to warm up a little. Nathan reckons Brooks Koepka and Justin Rose will be up there in the mix for a bet. More disappointing news for Tiger Woods though with him pulling out last Saturday as he is still not ready to play yet. I do wonder if he will ever return.

We have a great entry for our own "Masters" event this Sunday. I for one am looking forward to seeing how Gareth will set up an 18 hole par 3 course. I'm sure there will be a few interesting holes!! Remember there are prizes for gents and ladies. Good luck to all that are playing.

Monday 9th May sees the first of the 5pm shotgun starts. This will be a Texas Scramble. Entries are open for ladies and gents teams.

If enough ladies teams enter they will play for their own prizes. Entry fee is £20 per team.

The sheet is available now to enter and is opposite the Pro Shop.

Big thanks go to Colin Evans, Pete Bridges and Steve Robinson who on Tuesday morning got all the patio furniture out. They cleaned, mended and painted it also. All we need now is the sun to shine!

OLD SHOES

Now how many of you have got any old shoes kicking about? I'm talking any shoes not just golf shoes. Can you all do me a favour and bring them to the shop if you have. The more pairs the better. You will now be wondering what on earth I want with old shoes!! Well all I will be doing with them is passing them on to Paul Gibson. An old friend of his, Gavin Hudson, in his spare time, volunteers for Hull Homeless Outreach which is a local charity working with homeless people in Hull.

One of the issues he has noticed is lack of shoes, particularly for adult men. He therefore started collecting old shoes for the charity. He then realised that he wanted to do "something big".

He then had the idea of trying to collect 25,000 shoes!!! It would be a world record, and if he succeeds he is hopeful that they will either be lined up across the Humber Bridge or around the KC stadium. So come on. Bring us your old shoes.

HORNSEA MIXED GROUP TRIP TO HUNLEY HALL

Eight Hornsea couples had 2 days of golf at Hunley Hall, Cleveland, on Sunday and Monday this week. Difficult greens and some lung bursting climbs above the cliff tops were just two of the hazards for the weekend, organised by Peter Mounfield. Excellent food, drink and of course, company helped the group get over the challenges of the golf! All agreed that it will be good to get back to the flat lands of East Yorkshire. Pictured is Terry Clappison overlooking the views of the sea.

Thanks to Paul Lockwood for sending me this report. I wonder who won??

GOLD MEDAL COMPETITIONS

I know we are a month away from the first Gold Medal of the year (14th May) but I just wanted to remind you all that the Golf Committees decision is to continue with the compulsory entry up until 1.30pm. Other than a few complaints the majority of players last year definitely thought it worked well.

EAST RIDING UNION DINNER

Last Friday, 10 Hornsea members attended the East Riding of Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs' Annual Dinner, at the Willerby Manor Hotel. Hornsea members featured in Cameron Thompson's President's speech, with recognition for Leigh Gawley, winner of the East Riding 2015 Match play championship, Rees Brown East Riding Union team member, Luke Robinson Yorkshire Union team, and Howard Palmer President elect for 2016. Next year's dinner, at the Willerby Manor on Friday March 31, will be hosted by Howard Palmer 2016 President of the ERUGC. Hornsea Golf Club should have a good turnout to support Howard next year. Thanks to Steve Robinson for this report.

CAPTAINS CHALLENGE

Well you might all find this hard to believe but yet again we lost this Sunday on the last hole!! This is a habit we must stop…

This week's challenge was set up only on Saturday evening with Jonny Fisher Ulliott and Andrew Jiggy Giles standing in as originally we didn't have a game. Well after 6 holes I was starting to wish I hadn't asked them. I was 1 under par, Craig was playing ok and we found ourselves 4 down!! A small come back on the front 9 saw us sit down for a drink at the halfway house 2 down. No matter how hard we tried on the back 9 we just couldn't get back to level. In the end we won the back 9 1 up but lost the game. Can I again thank them both for a generous donation to the charity.

PING FITTING DAY

Don't forget the PING demo day is next Tuesday.

Course news

GREENS

Well more rain has yet again held up doing some things on the course that Gareth and his team would like to do. Cutting is proving to be the main problem with everything being so wet. We really need a dry period with some sunshine. All the new bunkers are now in play and looking good. The only area of abnormal ground conditions now is around the 7th tee. Some other areas are marked as GUR with white lines.
