Pros news

I'm starting this week's newsletter with a bit of good news about myself. As many of you will know just over two years ago I was rushed into hospital with a bit of heart trouble. After spending a week in hospital they had sorted me out and I was sent on my way with only a small tablet to take each day to stop my irregular heartbeat.

Last Thursday I went back to see my specialist who is more than happy with the results from recent tests and other than booking me in for a 24 hour heart monitor all is well.

If you can all think back to last week's newsletter there was a bit in about the Texas Scramble.

Well in a chance conversation last week I was given a little information I thought some of you might like.

In the winning team Stuart Pearson not only managed to break his zip on his trousers as mentioned before he also lost a few balls.

Well when I say a few, it was actually 7!!!! Good job they won.

He can get some new balls now!!

Special mention this week goes to Adrian Rosindale who on Saturday morning collected a brand new Titleist SM6 wedge from the shop.

Playing the 2nd hole and using the club for the second time he only went and holed out with it from 70 yards for a 2!!!

It was a nice send off for Paul Eyre our bar manager who left on Tuesday.

Paul has been a great member of the staff here at Hornsea.

I'm sure we all wish him well as he moves back home to be with his family.

CAPTAINS AWAY TRIP TO HOLME HALL

I'm sure this will be a popular trip and the sheet is now available to enter your names in pairs opposite the shop.

Numbers are limited to 60.

Please click here for more details.

HORNSEA 150 UPDATE

It's now just over a month away until we embark on playing 150 holes in a day on Friday 24th June in memory of Josh Fell for the Captain's Charity CRY. For those of you who haven't heard about this yet, it's basically a foolish challenge we've set ourselves to play 17-18 hours of non-stop golf, walking the full distance - approximately 45 miles!

We are hoping that as many members as possible can get to the club to support - we will be there all day! There is a lot to organise but below is our planned schedule of tee times. We will try to stick to these as close as possible but as you can imagine we are entering unchartered territory so we have no idea how our bodies will be feeling come round 6 and beyond!

Round 1 - 4.00am
Round 2 - 5.50am
Round 3 - 7.40am
20 min break
Round 4 - 10.00am
Round 5 - 12.00pm
Round 6 - 2.00pm 30 minute break
Round 7 - 4.40pm Round 8 - 6.50pm
Round 9 - 9.00pm (Holes 1-3 & 16-18)

Clubhouse for a well earnt pint or three - 9.45pm!!!

We have had a lot of interest from members wishing to caddy for a round (not too many volunteers for 4am though!) If you'd like to caddy please get in touch to advise a time which suits you. It's possible we may have a number of caddies for some of the latter rounds, so caddying duties may not necessarily be carrying our clubs but could be picking the ball out of the hole if we can't bend down! For any potential caddies worrying about carrying a big bag, don't fear, we will be taking pencil bags and half a dozen clubs; at one stage last year Steve Robinson was carrying 2 bags as they were that light!

Our Lady Captain; Caroline Barker and Paul Duckworth have both kindly volunteered to man the barbeque and this will be available from early afternoon right the way through into the evening with Paul the chef generously donating all the meat. I'm sure there will be some vegetarian options available too. It's hoped we can create a really good club atmosphere on the patio as the day wears on with us passing every couple of hours or so. If the weather is not so good we will ensure we have a gazebo or two to keep the food dry! There will be a separate email coming out from the club soon about the barbeque but it would be great to know roughly how many Paul needs to cater for on the day - so please respond to that email if you can. Furthermore, Angela Baker has agreed to document some of the day with her camera skills and Dave Blanchard is bringing his drone which should hopefully give some fantastic aerial shots of the course in full bloom.

If you think you could help us out in anyway no matter how big or small, please get in touch as every bit counts. If you'd like to donate there are paper sponsorship forms both in the Pro shop & both bars. Or you could visit our Just Giving page on www.justgiving.com/joshfellhornsea150

The money raised will go towards paying for Heart Screenings for 14-35 year olds which the NHS don't provide. These screenings are crucial at detecting underlying heart issues and could have potentially saved Josh's life had it been readily available.

Many thanks for your on-going support.

GOLD MEDALS

Can I thank everyone that played on Saturday for entering the competition without complaining about the compulsory entry. It does make a difference when everyone out on the course are all in the competition and I don't have people complaining about those playing off yellow tee's playing far quicker and putting off the completion players. It is only for the Gold Medals that this rule applies.

Please click here to see the order of merit standings.

MONDAY NIGHT SCRAMBLE

The sheet is now up for the next Monday evening event. For a change we are having a Yellow Peril. It will be a 5pm start again on Monday 6th June. If we don't get more entries shortly this event will be cancelled.

EAST RIDING UNION

Just a quick mention as Hornsea had 3 members playing last Sunday in the East Riding Union match which was played at Knaresborough against Harrogate. Luke Robinson, Rees Brown and Leigh Gawley all played and helped the East Riding get a draw on 18 points each. For a full report please click here. The next game is to be played here at Hornsea and it would be great if we could have lots of supporters watching some great golf. The date for the fixture at Hornsea is Sunday 12th June.

EURO PRO TOUR

For those that like to follow Steve Uzzells progress he is back in action this week in the first Euro Pro Tour event of the season at Frilford Heath. He is in good form after finishing joint winner in last week's Pro Am at The Oaks. Please click here to track his progress.

GREENS

Last Thursday I was amazed watching the greens getting verticut. It really is amazing how much come out. The pictures below shows the amount removed from just a few greens. One pass of the mower fills the boxes. As Gareth mentioned before this helps to remove some of the lateral growth and also removes thatch.

I found this online about verticutting.

To prune the grasses to improve tillering and stolon formation. This increases turf density and is very important for all fine competition turf such as bowling and golf greens.

-  To control thatch. The blades of a verticutting reel are much finer and more numerous than those on a scarifying reel. They are designed to be used above the thatch layer to remove dead and dying grass plants that will ultimately contribute to the thatch layer.

- To produce an upright grass prior to mowing to give a cleaner more consistent cut.

- As a cultural method for controlling weeds and weed grasses.

For those of you that are wondering if the sprinkler system is working trust me they are. I was out on the course for a walk last week and whilst standing on the first green just before 9pm there was a strange noise followed by the sprinklers coming up and absolutely soaking me before I had chance to get off the green!!

SMASHING TIME

Playing on Sunday evening one of our members made a fantastic 5 up the first which included his tee shot from the back tee hitting the window of the shop!!

Somehow his tee shot finished back in the middle of the first tee!! Well over the years quite a few shots from the back tee have hit the windows but they have never broken. I guess Max Guest must have really caught his just in the wrong direction!!!

Can I just thank Rick Hewland from All Clear Glass sorting the repair so quickly.
