PROFESSIONAL SHOP

Well I'm one year older since last week's newsletter, as I celebrated my birthday last Sunday. There is more about how it didn't quite go to plan later in the newsletter.

Paul was away, enjoying himself in Italy over the weekend, so I went out and did the junior lesson on Saturday. There was a great turn out and every one of them impressed me. Dave Topham brought his two sons Albert and Seth and he recorded them both with a slow motion camera. I have asked permission from Dave to put these video's on here as they are really good. Please remember they are slowed down so you can see them in more detail. I think a lot of you could learn a thing or two from watching them! Seth with the green cap really is something special. His swing is so simple. Note how still he manages to keep his head and also how well he swings through. So natural but simple. Watch and learn and enjoy!

The sheet goes up for the Gent's Invitation day tomorrow and will be opposite the shop. It is a Betterball Stableford off forward white tees. Can you please book in 4's to make sure no pair is left on their own. The cost is £10 per couple.

A nice range of Puma shoes came in this week along with a selection of clubs and balls from Callaway. You all really need to keep an eye on the shop as daily we have deliveries at this time of year.

Now we all like to see old photos and can I thank Peter Bridges for bringing this one in of the Hornsea Primary School football team from a few years ago!! I'm guessing about 1980ish. I'm sure you will all recognise Peter back right and he thought I was on this photo but I hate to disappoint you all but I was a year older.

There are a couple of faces I recognise though that either play or work at the club. Can you spot them?

EAST RIDING SENIORS CHAMPION

This report is taken from the East Riding website.

Phil Cross wins the ERU Seniors' Championship, played at Boothferry GC on Friday, 20 May

Ian Stephenson (Ganton), winner of three Seniors Championships in the last four years played against Phil Cross (Hornsea) in a two hole play-off, after both players had scored 78. At the first hole of a two hole play-off, Phil's approach shot finished within a yard of the hole and the resulting birdie set him up for his win, which he completed at the 18th hole.

The nicely prepared course played long after heavy overnight rain, resulting in a CSS of 74.

Overall

Can I just add well done to Barry Peasgood and Tony Barron who both also made it into the prizes.

ENGLAND GOLF

England Golf has at last put something on their website regarding the increase in handicaps to 90%. I hope you all understand it!

HANDICAPPING 4BBB Handicap Allowance - The Research the CONGU singles match play allowance recommendation changed from ¾ to full difference in the early 1990s, however it was not until 2004 that England Golf backed the recommendation. The recommended allowances became mandates in 2008, with a ¾ stroke allowance specified for 4BBB formats, and the Handicap Research Group was asked to investigate the 4BBB stroke allowance.

In 2009 the Peter Wilson Birdie-Par-Bogey (BPB) golf score simulator was utilised to generate scores for handicap combinations of 0 8 16 and 24 using different handicap allowances of 75% 80% 85% 90% 95% 100%. Statistically this showed that 85% or 90% produced the most equitable 4BBB results. Early data analysis (using scores from Ireland where 4BBB was a very popular format) backed up these findings. Over the next three years, scores from men's and ladies' singles stroke play competitions were obtained and combined in theoretical 4BBB pairings against handicap allowances of full, 7/8 and ¾. The results of the analyses indicated that the ¾ allowance was too harsh and a full allowance was too generous. To assess the impact of different allowances on competition leader boards, further 4BBB score simulations were created over a 2-year period to compare allowances of 7/8 and 90% and the impact of each on the top 4 leader board positions. 90% allowance was found to produce the most equitable results.

In 2015 further data analysis was undertaken using England 4BBB competition data (341 competitions from 161 clubs). This actual score data confirmed the theoretical and simulation analyses - that a change to a 90% allowance would have negligible impact on the leader boards. The findings included the observation that a high percentage of the top 10 teams were Cat 1 & Cat 2 players; that the top 4 teams typically remained in the top 4 positions with occasional shuffling of position; that 8 out of the top 10 teams remained in the top 10. Many event and competition organisers have consistently ignored the 2008 CONGU mandate and arrange full handicap allowance 4BBB competitions.

It was never believed that the change to 90% stroke allowance would impact who wins competitions, however it is hoped that the medium and high handicap players will be encouraged to participate in such competitions more often. I'm sure you are all now much clearer!

PREFFERED LIES

Quite a few visitors and a few members have been surprised that we have continued with placing until the end of May. Well I thought you might all like to see what is on the England Golf Website. Maybe more clubs should look at this! In response to current weather conditions across the country England Golf is going to extend the period for preferred lies until 31st May 2016, click here to read the ruling in full detail.

CAPTAINS CHALLENGE

It was my birthday on Sunday and what a fantastic day it was too. Well the weather was good anyway!! Our challenge came this week from brothers Shaun and Steve Prout. With it being my birthday you would have thought they would have given us a chance but with the amount of shots we had to give we were always up against it. 2 down after 2 was not quite the start we were after but we had managed to get it back to level after 9. I think the halfway house stop inspired the brothers though who on the back 9 and really played some good golf, leaving Craig and myself really struggling. In the end they beat us by 3&2 despite my best attempts to put them both off!! They were quite happy though and celebrated with a massive high five when they finished! Not quite the result I was after! Can I also thank them both for making very generous donations to the captains charity which meant £50 went into the charity this week.

SLOW PLAY

Yet again the subject of slow play was brought up in the Golf Committee meeting last week. This is a problem we all know will never go away as it gets discussed on a regular basis every year. I am putting it in this week's newsletter though just to give you all a quick reminder to please play as quickly as possible. Nobody likes to take more than 4 hours to play a round of golf but 4 ½ seems to becoming more the norm. Let's try and avoid this becoming the norm at Hornsea.

CAPTAINS AWAY TRIP TO HOLME HALL

I know it is a while before this trip but as I thought it is proving to be popular with only room for 10 more pairs. Please make sure you get your name down to avoid disappointment, click here for more info.

HORNSEA 150

Another week passes and Joe and Leigh are still looking for more caddies and helpers. They really will need some great support as this will be hard to complete without help. I have a list in the shop if you can spare a few hours.

MONDAY NIGHT SCRAMBLE

Well unfortunately with only 7 teams booked in to play in the next scramble I am sorry to say this event has been cancelled. There was due to be another Monday night event on July 11th but due to the lack of support for the first two this will also be cancelled. I do think the problem is that there is just so much other golf that people are now playing.

Such a shame though as 10 years ago these events were always full. Yet again shows how things in golf are changing. If anyone has any ideas that they think might work, please let me know and I will take it to the Golf Committee.

Competition results

Thursday 19th May - Mid Week Stableford

1st £25 - Paul Duckworth - 40pts
2nd £15 - Paul Brummitt - 39pts
3rd £10 - John Bickerdike - 38pts

2's Comp - Only one 2 made by David Rogerson. Wins him £37. Now here is a story for you though. John Cordock made a hole in one on the 17th, but was not in the 2's comp! I pay two two's for a hole in 1. Costly mistake Mr Cordock!

Saturday 21st May - Grays Hospital Cup

1st £25 - Ray Clarkson - 42pts
2nd £15 - Will Marshall - 41pts
3rd £10 - Lee Guest - 37pts

2's Comp - Jon Naylor, Adrian Foord, Martin Champs and Steve Blanchard all had 2's winning them £17 each. Luke Robinson also had one but was not entered into the 2's comp. Special mention to Steve Blanchard who got his 2 on the 2nd.

Sunday 22nd May - Junior Reg Brown Summer Trophy

1st - Will Marshall - 42pts
2nd - Albert Anderson - 40pts
3rd - Harry Anderson - 36pts

Saturday 21st May & Tuesday 24th May - Ladies ELGA Trophy

1st - Sharon Cane - 84/13/71
2nd - Angela Clappison - 84/10/74
3rd - Caroline Barker - 90/13/77

Another win for Sharon. Well done. Come on girls. Get on that practice ground or get yourselves to Pauls group lessons.

TUESDAY CLUB

27 played this week in cold breezy conditions. A fantastic score of 42pts by Charlie Betts was good enough to take the spoils with Roger Scott taking 2nd place with 40pts. Both great scores considering the conditions. Hard to believe but nobody managed to hit the green on the 18th, so no near the pin winner this week.

MORE RESULTS

These are results that have been sent to me this week from Wendy Lockwood and Sam Middleton.

Ladies Scratch Team v Scarthingwell

The Ladies Scratch Team picked themselves up from a disappointing result last week and came out fighting at Hornsea on Monday. Fabulous performances from all the team saw them achieve a 5 1/2 to 1 1/2 result. The team are now looking forward to repeating this performance when they go for the return fixture in a couple of weeks' time. Well played ladies.

Wendy Lockwood

Gents Scratch A team drew away at Hessle 2-2. The B team beat Burstwick here 2 ½ - 1 ½. Luke Robinson has qualified for the Brabazon Trophy and the gents Mail on Sunday team are playing away at Forest Pines on Saturday.

Sam Middleton

SCORPIONS

The Scorpions last Sunday held a presentation on completion of their season. This is a quick report from Tim Hatchett:

Attached are photos of the winners, Tom Elder and Jon Bickerdike, and runners up, Phil Kitchen and Jiggy Giles. The result came down to a putt on the 18th in the final match of the season, made by Brian Hawksworth who was standing in for Jon Bickerdike. This was a very sporting effort by Brian, because, had he missed, he and his partner would have come second. The rumour that he accidently sank the putt while trying to miss is, I am sure, grossly unfair.

Upcoming fixtures

Saturday 28th May - Stanley Wilson and Minnett Good Cups
Tuesday 31st May - Ladies Medal
Wednesday 1st June - Past Captains Am Am 1pm shotgun start
Thursday 2nd June - Mid Week Stableford

GREENS

I know, it is all I am pretty well saying each week at the moment, but cut, cut, and cut some more is really the main thing that is happening on the course at the moment. Even I had to cut my grass at home twice last week as it is growing like mad. Gareth did get some fertiliser down on the greens last week to try and encourage the poa (finer grasses) to start growing. It was a 8:0:12 + 3% fe if that helps you keen gardeners trying to produce gardens like greens!
