Pros news

Firstly can I apologise for not getting a full newsletter to you all last week. This was due to us having some serious internet problems in the shop. This does mean that you have plenty to read this week and I mean plenty so sit down with a cup of tea and enjoy!! Most of last week's newsletter was results from events that we have held at Hornsea so I have left those in for you all to catch up on.

Yvonne and I managed to escape for a couple of days last week. We went to the Wensleydale Heifer which is near Leyburn driving up on Wednesday and returning Thursday. It really is very nice if you have a special occasion to celebrate or you fancy a treat. I know there are a few members that have been before and all enjoy the excellent food and accommodation. Can anyone recommend anywhere else for me to surprise Yvonne with? We have a big anniversary coming up!! http://www.wensleydaleheifer.co.uk/

There are lots of sheets up opposite the Professionals shop at the moment that I wouldn't want you to miss. Please take a look next time you are down. They are for, Invitation Day 26th June, Captains Weekend 2nd & 3rd July, Jack Major/Norman Seaton & John Wood 16th July, Holme Hall exchange 22nd July and a club match against Cottingham Parks 7th July.

The Callaway Fitting Day on Tuesday went down well.

It even gave me chance to check my driver was set up correctly. A few tweaks and I found an extra 20 yards. All very interesting.

If you didn't come make sure you keep your eyes open for the next one we hold. It really can make a big difference.

MESSAGE FROM YOUR CHAIRMAN

At the Board Meeting on 31st May, plans were approved to develop the front end of the Rolston Bar where the snooker table is currently situated. This forms part of a longer term strategy to make further use of the Lounge as a venue for weddings, christenings and private parties as a revenue stream for the club; and for the restaurant to be open and available for non-members.

The development of the 'Rolston Lounge' will enable members and guests to use brighter and more comfortable surroundings, especially when the Lounge Room is booked and out of use, and for the Club to close down the Lounge during 'quieter times' thus saving on lighting and heating costs. The plans include the development of additional gents and ladies toilet facilities near the Gents' Locker Room entrance, also enabling the club to put security locks on the Locker Room doors. The snooker table will be moved upstairs to a newly decorated Members' Snooker and 'mess' Room.

Plans are to furnish the 'Rolston Lounge' with sofas, arm-chairs and coffee tables, leaving the existing tables and chairs in the 'Rolston Bar' for bar snacks, etc.

The Board apologises for any inconvenience experienced during the changes.

Phase 1 Decoration of upstairs Snooker Room June/July 2016

Phase 2 Completion of additional toilet facilities June/July 2016

Phase 3 Re-location of Snooker Table August 2016

Phase 4 Re-decoration of 'Rolston Lounge Sept 2016

Phase 5 Furnishings and Completion Oct 2016 It is hoped that other areas of the House facilities will be redecorated and upgraded in the coming year when funding allows.

Paul Lockwood
Chair.

DAY OUT AT GANTON

Last week a few of our members went for a day at Ganton. I do love it when you send me pictures of people struggling. Paul Lockwood sent me these pictures of Caroline Barker in the large bunker on the 16th taking her a few go's to get out eventually giving up and coming out backwards.

What Paul didn't know though was that Caroline had taken a photo of him and also sent it to me without him knowing!! It is him with just the top of his hat visible!! Now I wonder if he got out first go?

Club news

HORNSEA BUNKERS

Bunkers are always an interesting topic of conversation with the main issue lack of sand or been badly raked. Well this picture was sent to me on Saturday by Leigh Gawley. Only members were out in front all day so this is how a member had raked a bunker and left it. Now I'm sure whoever left it like that would have been the first to complain!! Please take care when raking the bunkers and leave them like you would like to find them.

PAST CAPTAINS AM AM

Wednesday 1st June saw 21 teams battled round in very testing conditions. Frank Palin yet again did a fantastic job in organising the event. It really is great to see so many past captains supporting the event and this year the event has raised £1,065 which will go towards improving things on the course. The leading ladies team was Sylvia Charter, Sharon Cane, Pam Mounfield and Maggie Gee. The gent's winners were Tony Barron, Paul Marshall, Steve Hawkins and Gary Markham. The date for your diaries for next year's event is 7th June.

HORNSEA FIRE BRIGADE AM AM

An interesting format was given to all playing in this year's Am Am with 2 from 4 to count on all holes apart from the par 3's where all 4 had to count. Well this really made a difference too many teams with some taking full advantage and others finding it a real card wrecker!! Yet again Mick Bateman and his team had done a great job getting teams and organising sponsors for each hole. This really helps to raise funds for the air ambulance and the fire fighters charities they support with just over £2,000 been raised. Many thanks for all your support.

Prizes this year went to:
1st 102pts T Close, R Close, C Davy & C Brown
2nd 102pts S Milner, C Betts, B Templeman & L Fitchett
3rd 100pts N Jordan, N Cook, M Moulds & C Evans
4th 98pts S Naylor, K Marshall, S Carmichael & L Guest

Nearest the pins: C Davy 7th, P Coates 12th, J Clubley 17th and Nearest the line, P Helm.

1st DIVISION OPEN

Misty conditions met the early starters in Hornsea's 1st Division Open last Saturday but for the first time in weeks there was no wind at all at the start of the day giving the early starters near perfect conditions to put a good score together. The wind was back again by 11 o'clock though which made the last 9 holes play very tough indeed and CSS went up to 73. Only 71 played in this year's event which is quite disappointing with some clubs sending no players at all. I remember when you had to put your name down on a sheet and hope to get picked. Funny how things are changing in golf.

Leading scores:

Best Gross, M Robson (Beverley) 72
2nd Gross, J Fisher Ulliott (Hornsea) 75
Best Nett, J Palmer (Hornsea) 68
2nd Nett, P Court (Cave Castle) 71
3rd Nett, A Marson (Hornsea) 71
Team Trophy, Beverley: M Robson, R Norton, J Blower, I Goldie
2's Club, £18.50 each.

MIXED OPEN

A little bit of sunshine was on show at Hornsea for the Mixed Open last Sunday. It was still cool though with a stiff easterly breeze blowing which yet again meant the last 9 holes challenged all golfers. 28 teams played from all over Yorkshire and with the best gents and the best ladies score to count on each hole 80pts came out on top. 3 teams managed that score and with 5 prizes on offer, which are vouchers in the professionals shop at Hornsea, 78pts was the last score to receive a prize. Due to the recent weather conditions I know a few found the rough a little tricky with it a little lush in places but from the overall comments everyone that played seemed to enjoy the day. Next year's event is on Sunday 4th June and is already booking up fast so please get in touch with us if you would like to play in it next year. Please find the results below.

YORKSHIRE 4th DIVISION TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

Last Wednesday saw the Hornsea team of Luke Robinson, Jonny Fisher-Ulliott and Rees Brown gain promotion into the 3rd Division after finishing 6th at Teeside. A huge thanks goes to Howard Palmer and Manny Gray for going caddying and keeping the boys going. The next round is to be played at Silkstone on 29th June. If anyone is able to go along and help on the day please have a word with Howard Palmer.

HORNSEA 150

Well it is now just over a week until Joe and Leigh attempt to play 150 holes in one day.

A few people have said it will be easy just riding on a buggy. Trust me they are not using buggies. They are walking every hole.

I guess that will be near 50 miles by the time they finish.

Trying to play every round in about two hours will be tough.

This really is some challenge they have set themselves.

I really hope you all can support them.

EAST RIDING UNION MATCH

On Sunday Hornsea played host to the East Riding Gents match against Halifax and Huddersfield.

Howard Palmer the East Riding President this year reminded me of Seve when he was the Ryder Cup Captain. He was everywhere offering food and drinks and keeping a tally of all scores. It was great to see someone so keen. I'm sure this must have helped the East Riding team also as they produced a fine win 22-14. For the full report please see below.

East Riding Union v Halifax & Huddersfield Union, played at Hornsea Golf Club on Sunday 12th June 2016

On a day when rain was falling almost everywhere in Yorkshire, the Halifax & Huddersfield team crossed the breadth of the county to the east coast to find Hornsea cloudy but dry and unusually, without wind. After coffee and bacon rolls, the two teams set out at 10.00 am.

The morning foursomes appeared to be going in favour of East Riding who, at halfway, found themselves up in four matches and down in two. However, a reversal for Nick Jones and Leigh Gawley saw their lead eroded, finally losing on the final green. Acting Captain, Alan Wright and his partner Luke Robinson, however, turned a 3 hole deficit into a half with Luke holing a twelve foot putt on the final green, to leave the lunchtime score at 7:5 in favour of East Riding.

Setting out at 2.00 pm for the afternoon singles, East Riding were soon into their stride and the first seven matches to pass through the 9th hole all had the East Riding player comfortably in charge. The next two matches were all square, followed by a one hole advantage to each team in the next two. It was not until the final match that Halifax & Huddersfield had a significant advantage.

Once again, Nick Jones had his lead overturned to lose on the last green and the same fate befell Mark Woodall. Big-hitting Harry Woolfall blitzed his opponent 6&4, winning the first three holes with birdies, whilst Ryan Gray almost pulled off a stirring comeback, having been 3 down at the turn, he took his opponent to the final green before conceding to a closing birdie. The singles finished 15:9 in East Riding's favour, making the overall score 22:14. Rich Webster, Andy Lockwood and Nick Raybould all scored maximum points.

Both teams were welcomed by Paul Lockwood Snr., the Chairman of Hornsea Golf Club and Howard Palmer, the President of East Riding, thanked him for all the support that Hornsea was giving the Union in 2016 in hosting four fixtures. Stuart Naylor, the President of Halifax & Huddersfield announced the result and made reference to the fact that his only previous visit to Hornsea had not been filled with success either.

OTHER RESULTS

A Team

The ladies A team travelled to Brough Golf Club on Friday for their A Team match. The match tied at 3 3 both clubs waited for the final match to be decided, Jan Jackson winning on the 18th gave Hornsea a well-deserved win. Well played everyone.

Ladies Scratch Team

On Wednesday 8th June the Ladies scratch team went to Scarthingwell Golf Club. Fresh from their win at Hornsea the team had high expectations. A convincing win of 5 2 secured Hornsea the result. Again a superb performance from all the team.

On Wednesday the ladies scratch team had a great result against Hessle winning 51/2 1-/2. Well played ladies: Angela Clappison, Rosie Atkin, Sharon Cane, Nicola Salzl, Wendy Lockwood, Caroline Barker and Rosemary Turner.

Wendy Lockwood

Gents Scratch League

Both teams continue to do well with the A team leading the 1st Division and the B team leading the 3rd Division. A 2 - 2 draw at home for the 1st team against Hull and a 3 - 1 win for the B team against Boothferry helped to keep both teams out in front.

Course news

GREENS

Those of you that play a lot might have noticed that Gareth has been a little short staffed this week as both Paul and Andy have been away on training courses. Paul on a spaying course, and Andy a chainsaw course. The greens this week have been aerated with 8mm tines and the double rolled. The greens where then sprayed with a wetting agent and seaweed which helps to reduce stress during hot periods. Other than that it really is just cut, cut, cut as grass is growing like mad as I'm sure you are all experiencing yourselves if you have lawns at home.

ASSISTANCE REQUIRED

Have you all noticed the new bedding plants that have been put in by Steve Robinson and Colin Evans. It took them nearly 12 hours overall to collect and plant them all between them. It would be great if we had a few more volunteers to help. I'm sure some of you must have some spare time to help. Please contact Steve if you are able to give some time to help and look after these areas. If any of you notice any weeds please remove them and help to keep these areas looking tidy.
