So August is nearly upon us and its less than five months to Christmas! What a happy way to start this week's newsletter! At least we have just had more than a full week of great weather and even I have had my legs out. Not a pretty sight some might say!
Colin Evans and Kevin where busy on Tuesday morning cutting back all the old conifer trees and bushes around the patio area and down the path. Can any of you remember them been planted? They really have got a little out of hand over the years!! Hardly miniature bushes now!!
I must mention Steve Robinson this week as he is doing a great job of looking after all the flower beds around the Clubhouse and Shop. This takes up quite a bit of his time and I'm sure he would like a bit of help from anyone that might have a little time to give. Please have a word with us in the shop if you can offer your services.
I know quite a few of you must have seen them as quite a few have been taken. The AGM notices are now available to collect from the clubhouse. Please help to save your club some money by collecting yours next time you play.
Whilst away on another course last week mentioned below this sign was near the 1st tee.
It is not just here were golfers obviously don't think about where they are going!
CAPTAINS AWAY TRIP TO HOLME HALL
Well I know I did most of the organising but I for one thoroughly enjoyed the Captains Day Out last Friday to Holme Hall. One of the best days away we have had I'd say. I was suffering a little on Saturday though!!
The course was fantastic, food excellent, weather outstanding and the company first class. What more could you ask for? Can I thank all that attended and I hope you all enjoyed it as much as me. The course definitely beat me though with the long grass claiming 6 of my golf balls on the last 9 holes!! I am already on with trying to sort out next year's trip and I shall let you know when it is all sorted and where we are going. Remember though we have the yearly exchange with Filey coming up Sunday 11th September. The sheet for that will be available from next Friday 5th August.

KNOCKOUT MATCHES
I thought I would put this in again. Just so you all know and to be aware "Greens Maintenance" starts on 15th August and will last for approximately two weeks. Please make sure you get your knockouts played before this date or risk playing on greens that might not be as good for a short period. Extensions will not be given as the period to play your games has already been extended compared to previous years.
GENTS MAIL ON SUNDAY
Well its great news again for team Hornsea as under the guidance of Sam Middleton the team have another win and move on now to the 8th round. The latest win was over Saltburn Golf Club and saw Hornsea go through 4 - 1 with impressive wins for Andy Fox, Mark Cooke, Sam Middleton and Leigh Gawley. Our only player to loose was Nathan Wright. Saltburn had brought a very strong side so this really was a great win. Well played boys and good luck in the next round.
GENTS SCRATCH LEAGUE
Well it has happened again to Hornsea. This time it's the gents A team that play in the 1st Division Scratch League that have had a fantastic season and went into the last game away at Hull on Tuesday evening (which is always a tough game) needing 1.5 points to win the league. Unfortunately though the Hornsea team lost 4 - 0 to hand the title to Hull. Gutted for all the team is an understatement after such a great season. Well played to all that have represented the team and I'm sure next year the title will be ours.
The B team which have also had a great year went into an away game at Boothferry needing a good win to lift the 3rd Division title on Wednesday evening. This time we were 1 point behind Boothferry so again a good result was required to overturn this. We had a strong team out and they all performed well. Unfortunately again though Hornsea came up .5 short after a 2-2 draw and like the A team have finished 2nd in the league after a great season. As mentioned by one of the members, at times we have had too rely on higher handicappers to make up the numbers. You should be proud to be asked to represent your club and should make every effort to play. Amazing after a full season .5 was the difference.
Can I just thank Sam Middleton for all his hard work in organising both teams this year. It was a great effort and I know all the players and myself at the club appreciate what you do. Thanks Sam.
LADIES SCRATCH TEAM
Last Wednesday the Ladies Scratch Team travelled to Otley for their final league match. Confidence was high following the home win however in hot conditions and following the 36 hole scratch cup the day before Hornsea ladies went down 5 - 2. It has been a fantastic season for the Scratch Team ladies achieving the highest league position in recent years.
The squad Angela Clappison, Rosie Atkin, Sharon Cane, Lyndis Johns, Nicky Salzl, Caroline Barker, Wendy Lockwood, Rosemary Turner, Myra Smith & Mags Gee. Congratulations to all the players. Onward and upwards!!!
LADIES A TEAM
The "A" team unfortunately lost 4-3 to Sandmoor on Tuesday 26th July. However it was a valiant try with all 3 ladies at the rear having to give 6 shots and all loosing on the 18th. It was so disappointing as we could have possibly made the finals had we won but there is always next year!!!
I would like to give my heart felt thanks to all the ladies who played for the "A" team and gave their best!! Mags Gee, Rosemary Turner, Myra Smith,Cath Caley, Sue Robinson, Sarah Stonier, Jean Prout, Jan Jackson, Wendy Lockwood, Judy Thornton, Nicky Salzl, Angela Clappison, Lyndis Johns, Barbara Teal and myself have been in the team.
Chris Gregory
"A" Team Captain
TUESDAY CLUB
28 played this week and a fantastic score of 43pts by Bill Railton was the clear winner this week from Brian Hawksworth who managed 40pts. Chris Reed won the nearest the pin on the 18th. I would love to see the latest standings as quite a few will now have the 10 score in and I think the overall table could look interesting.
This week's blog consists of the following: Captains Away Day at Holme Hall, last Major of the year, group sessions for everyone.
