Pros news

Well that's another school summer holiday done. For a change for the best part the weather has been great too. I'm sure some of you will be pleased though to see the kids back to school!! Only one more school holiday and it will be Christmas!

A quick reminder for all that like the Wiles Cup our qualifying round is this Saturday. Unfortunately, I won't be able to try and qualify as I will be away at my nephews wedding. Good luck to all that play though. Don't forget that for this Saturday only it is placing as this a Winter Alliance competition

It gets harder and harder these days to get courtesy times at other clubs when we have events on here that take up the whole day. We do try though and get as many as we can. Please as members do not ring the clubs yourselves. This is one sure way of upsetting other local clubs and could in the end lead us to not getting any at all. It is not nice to receive calls from other clubs complaining. Please if we have any times book them in the shop through us.

This week we received the poster for the Yorkshire Golf Dinner. It looks like they have some interesting speakers this year.

Please click here for more information.

FILEY EXCHANGE

Well it is only a few days now to one of my favourite days of the year. Let's hope the sun shines and it is not too windy!! Those that went a few years ago when Mike Brooke was captain will know what I mean!! Can all going on the bus please make sure you are there and ready for the bus to leave at 7.45. It will not wait.

2017 DATE FOR YOUR DIARY

Now I know it is a while away but the away days always get booked up quickly so I just wanted to let you all know that we now have a confirmed date with Easingwold Golf Club for the Captains exchange next year. The date is Friday 4th August. Please get this date in your diaries now. More details will follow next year.

RYDER CUP HORNSEA STYLE

Well it's more of a Captain versus Vice Captains match but Allan is not available so our Vice Vice Captain Rees is standing in. The plan is to play in pairs with two teams. We shall be playing the first 9 holes as foursomes off half handicap. The second 9 will be a betterball off 9/10 handicap. Keep your stableford points and the total of all pairs will be added together to find the winning team. Prizes will also be given to the best scores. Tee times will be available from 8.30am until 11.00am with a presentation after. Cost of entry is just £3 per person with half the money taken going to the Captains charity and the other half in prizes. This is again something a little different so please make sure you enter and support this year's Captain and Rees.

The entry sheet for this is in the Rolston Bar.

Please click here for more information.

NOT THE BEST OF LIES

Well if you all think back to last week you might remember the picture of the ball in the tree on the 14th. Well this week I think this is even better. Ian Aaron on Saturday morning didn't get off to the best of starts.

He slightly miss-hit his tee shot off the 1st tee and somehow his ball finished actually in the bin to the side of the 1st tee!!

Now this might have been the end for many a golfer but not Ian as despite making an 8 on the 1st another 8 on the 3rd then a 9 on the 11th he still came in with a nett 73. It just shows you should keep going and never give up. Well done Ian.

ALWAYS BE PREPARED!!

Again going back a few weeks do you remember Graham Winship falling into the pond. Well on Saturday one of the members definitely came off the course considerably wetter than even Graham was.

Teeing off just before 1.30 and playing 18 holes in what could only be described as terrible conditions this member decided it was not worth putting waterproofs on!! He was a little damp when he finished and thought he would use the hand drier in the gents to attempt to dry his shirt.

Unfortunately, someone told me so I thought I would take a quick pic!!

Can anyone name him? Click here with your answers.

WILDLIFE AT HORNSEA

Can I just thank Harvey Scott for the latest pictures to be sent to me. This time we have a doe and two fawns that he snapped early one morning whilst playing the 3rd hole.

As mentioned before I love the amount of wildlife that we have on our course and even if you are having a bad round you should just take a look around and realise how lucky you are to be out on such a wonderful piece of countryside as well as been a fantastic golf course. Keep the pics coming in please.

GENTS DAILY MAIL

Well after a fantastic run I am sorry to report that Hornsea lost on Saturday in the 8th round to a very strong team from Kenwick Park. They had brought a very strong team which consisted of an England player and also two County players. It's not often Phil Cross receives 6 shots and Leigh Gawley 4. It was always a close game with not much in any of the games. In the end though the final score was 3-2. Yet again this year Hornsea just miss out. Never mind though there is always next year. Can I just thank all who have played this year and especially to Tom Walker who stood in on Saturday at the last minute. Sam Middleton you have done a great job again this year organising it all.

UPCOMING COMPETITIONS

Saturday 10th September - Wiles Cup Qualifier
Sunday 11th September - Filey Exchange

GENTS OVER 50'S OPEN AM AM

A warm and humid day greeted all golfers in Hornsea Golf Clubs last Over 50's of the year. Golfers from all over Yorkshire again came to play and from us all at Hornsea we hope you enjoyed it. It is not like Hornsea when we hold an event, but the greens have been slow to recover from the recent greens maintenance, so were not up to our high standards, but for some this was not a problem as the team scores were very good.

Next year's events are already filling up so if you don't want to be disappointed can I suggest getting your entries in as soon as possible. For more information either give us a call 01964 534989 or drop us an email office@hornseagolfclub.co.uk

Please find the leading scores here

KNOCKOUT MATCHES

Due to some of this year's finalists being away and others qualifying for more than one final there will be just six finals to take place on Sunday 18th September. They are as follows,

12.50 - Pat Shackles, Stuart Branton v Paul Harland
1.00 - Ladies Cup, Angie Hinch v Sharon Cane
1.10 - Cutting Cup, Steve Newton v Harry Anderson
1.20 - Stanley Earle, Sarah Ahearne v Debbie Goddard-Taylor
1.30 - Bailey Foursomes, Charlie Betts & Graham Markham v Tom Walker & Ross Meggison
1.40 - Ann and Sam, Caroline Barker & Paul Lockwood v Angela Clappison & Terry Clappison

It would be great to see a few people out supporting all of these games and to be at the small presentation after.

Other finals that will need to be played on dates arranged by the players are,
Brown Higson - Jim Clubley & Neil Jordan v Ron Wainman & Dave Egerton
Terry Hall - Leigh Gawley & Rees Brown v Paul Lockwood & Alan Barker
Veterans Trophy - Bill Railton v Steve Hawkins
Lotherington Cuo - Harry Anderson v John Thackray Snr
Holmes Ramsden - Ashley Dexter v James Webster
Maw Scratch Cup - Leigh Gawley v Paul Harland (Playing this Saturday)

Can I just say well done to all on making the finals and good luck.

TUESDAY CLUB

Well with Charlie Betts away it gave the chasing few a chance of closing the gap and both Graham Markham and Bill Templeman did just that with them both having 39pts. The title is not yours yet Charlie!! Winning this week though with a great score of 42pts was Richard Johnston with Paul Hitchen in 2nd with 40. It wasn't particularly close but Barry Peasgood took the nearest the pin on the last.

GENTS HULL & DISTRICT ASSOCIATION WINTER ALLIANCE

Last Thursday saw the start of the Alliances. The first event was played at Withernsea and when Nathan contacted me to say Hornsea had done a couple of 63's and they were the best scores in I was very pleased and I thought we were off to a great start of the season.

How wrong could I be!! Now a 63 round Withernsea is 9 under which is a great effort. Can you believe in the end though this was 6 shots off the pace with a pair from Hessle, Mally Redmore & Brian Calam, coming in with a 15 under par 57!!!!

Well team Hornsea it looks like we are up against it this year. Heads down team we will not give in!!

Adrian Rosindale & Mick Russell and Andy Dickinson & Paul Sellers did our 63's.
