Pros news

I have a lot for you all to read this week with me missing a few bits last week with being away and things happening at the club. Please make sure you read it all.

So last week Yvonne and I had a few days away in Wales. We stayed at Celtic Manor which was very nice and with it being our belated 20th anniversary we treated ourselves to an upgrade and stayed in the newly refurbished signature rooms. Very nice it was too. Before anyone else asks me, no I didn't play golf. I am tempted to go back though to play as the complex if you have not been really is fantastic. Please click here to take a look.

I couldn't quite believe it on Saturday morning when I walked down to work. It was pitch black and really quite cold. It is amazing how quickly things seem to be changing this year. Soon be Christmas!

Talking Christmas I have put the News Years Draw sheet up.

I really must update this poster as David Close made this when he worked for me over 10 years ago!!

Tickets are still only 50p this year and as always all money paid in will go back out in prizes. Last year there was over £1,600 in prizes with the 1st an electric trolley worth £450.

Good luck to all who enter.

GREENS/COURSE POLICY

Members may be interested to know that the Course policy and Schedule is up for its Annual Review by Directors at the October Board Meeting.

Works for the Winter months include the scheduled bunker work and refurbishments on the 16th and 17th holes and the re-siting of trees around the 7th tee.

Under serious consideration will also be the 'carries' onto fairways and where there are 'blind shots' from tees. The directors are aware of the pressure that the long grass in these areas puts on the pace of play, and have listened to comments made by members and visitors during the season. As usual the 'mounds' will also be discussed, with the schedule for cutting and the potential re-shaping under consideration.

If interested members have any useful and helpful comments regarding improvements to the course, please put them in writing and pass them to Stretton before 20th October.

It is nice to look back at this video David Blanchard took with his drone earlier in the year at the Hornsea 150 how good the course did look in June.

Well worth watching if you have not seen it yet so you can see the course from above.

Please click here or on the image to take a look.

PACE OF PLAY

Can all members please read the below as this effects all golfers and is not just a problem here but at all golf courses.

Keeping the course moving

As we enter the period of the year when our daylight hours grow shorter and the available golfing time is put under extreme pressure, this set of guidelines has been compiled in order to encourage all golfers to develop and maintain a good pace of play on the course without sacrificing your enjoyment of the 'great game', or annoying those behind you!

1) Prior to Teeing Off

" Ensure that you have all the necessary equipment, such as balls, tees, divot repair-bag, pitch-mark repairer, scorecard and pencil.
" Be ready to play at your allocated tee-time. If not, allow the next group to go off early.

2) On the Course

- All players must maintain their place in the field immediately behind the group in front - not just ahead of the group behind. This is a group responsibility and all members should be proactive in addressing slow-play by reminding their playing partners of their obligations if they slow the group down.

- Should your group fall one clear hole behind, as measured when you are on a tee (i.e. you move on to the tee of a par 4 or 5 hole and the previous group has already left the green in front), and those behind you have been waiting to play to the green you have just left, then the agreed protocol is to call the group behind to play through, irrespective of the number of players in that group, or where you are on the course (e.g. the first or the eighteenth!).

- Help keep an eye on your partners' shots. If you hit a ball that you think may be hard to find, or may be out of bounds, always hit a provisional ball.

- No more than five minutes is allowed to search for any ball. If you can't find your ball in 5 minutes you must proceed by enforcing the golf rules for Lost Ball. If more than one ball needs to be found, split up and search for all the balls at the same time, calling any waiting group behind through immediately.

- If as a result of losing your ball, you cannot score in a Stableford Points Competition, move on to the next hole immediately.

- Go to your ball and get ready to hit your next shot as soon as it is feasible; i.e., not impeding another player's shot or endangering yourself. Do not always wait for your mate to play before going to your ball. If it is safe to do so, and your partner is not ready to play, let them know you are and play on. ('Ready Golf')

- Don't be slowed down by giving 'honour' on the tee. Shorter hitters can tee off first, or play 'Ready Golf' if it's safe to do so.

- Walking briskly between shots, reminding the slower walkers to keep up when necessary. It's also a good way of exercising the cardio-respiratory system and burning calories.

- Once the ropes go out, carry if you can. At the green, leave your golf bag or trolley strategically placed between the green and the next tee.

- Buggy users should be particularly aware of the extra time taken in sharing a buggy and look for ways to speed up play, for example, move ahead of those on-foot to locate their golf balls, ensure that the cart is parked well to the side of greens for easy access when leaving the green to reduce the number of times that you have to get in and out.

- In winter time and during wet spells, ride-on buggies must be kept to the rough, and you may have to walk out onto the fairway to play your shot. So plan your route carefully to get to your ball without causing damage.

3) On the Green

-  When you reach the green, move quickly to your ball and repair all visible pitch marks. Where possible, line up your putt prior to your turn.

- If your ball needs to be marked, then do it as quickly as you can. Anticipate the requirements of the first player to putt, i.e. the player with the shortest putt attends to the flag.

- Except in match play, and where you will stand on someone else's lie, once you start putting, continue until you complete the hole. Line up your putt while others are putting.

- If playing a par or Stableford event and you can no longer score on that hole, pick up your ball and let others continue.

- The first player to finish the hole picks up the flag and replaces it as soon as the hole is completed, leaving the green as quickly as possible.

- Players should proceed to the next tee without delay. The following group should be ready and waiting to play their approach shots, so the path taken to the next tee should be borne in mind.

- Think ahead; leave your bag, trolley or buggy in a place where you won't be hindering the next group.

4) Marking Cards

- Cards should be marked when you arrive at the next tee, not on, or near the green you have just finished.

-  If you are first to tee off, mark your car after playing your shot.

5) Calling Groups Through

- Nobody likes it, but it happens. To make it as painless as possible, make an early decision and get the group behind through as quickly as possible. They should not have to ask.

-  If you cannot immediately find a ball in a difficult area, if they are ready to play, call the following group through as you start looking, not after 4½ minutes.

- As you will have played a provisional (won't you!), there will be no need to run back to the tee and suffer the embarrassment and lack of breath following a long 'jog'.

- If you are aware of a group behind having to wait on a regular basis (particularly if they are a two-ball), let them through 'on the run', teeing off as a five or six-ball, and allowing them to move on quickly to their second shots.

If ever there is a major problem with slow-play, please bring it to the attention of the staff in the shop, the Captain, or one of the Directors for them to deal with it in a sensible manner. Don't take matters into your own hands. Trying to communicate your frustration or anger on the course or afterwards in the car park or bar is not appropriate.

We all love this game, so try your best to help everyone get around the course in a safe, friendly and sociable manner.

LOOKING FOR BALLS

"A polite reminder to all players that it is prohibited to enter fields and gardens bordering the course in order to retrieve golf balls hit out of bounds. There is clear evidence of fences recently damaged or trodden down to gain access to private property. Any member seen or reported to have trespassed on land outside the boundaries of the course may face disciplinary action. Please keep out."
By order of the Board of Directors.

Good news

GOLF IS GOOD FOR YOU!!

I found this article earlier in the week and I thought it was good so I'm sharing it with you all.

People who play golf live longer than those who do not, new research has suggested

Edinburgh scientists claimed the sport was likely to increase life expectancy, help chronic diseases and improve mental health.

Researchers reviewed 5,000 studies into golf and found it had physical and mental health benefits for people of all ages.

They found the physical gains increased with age.

Balance and muscle endurance in older people were improved by playing the sport and it was also likely to improve cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic health.

Golfing could also help those who suffered chronic diseases including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, colon and breast cancer and stroke, as well as helping reduce the risk of anxiety, depression and dementia, researchers found.

The study found golfers typically burnt a minimum of 500 calories over 18 holes and those walking the course could cover four to eight miles.

Dr Andrew Murray, from the physical activity for health research centre at Edinburgh University, said: "We know that the moderate physical activity that golf provides increases life expectancy, has mental health benefits and can help prevent and treat more than 40 major chronic diseases such as heart attacks, stroke, diabetes, breast and colon cancer."

"Evidence suggests golfers live longer than non-golfers, enjoying improvements in cholesterol levels, body composition, wellness, self-esteem and self-worth."

"Given that the sport can be played by the very young to the very old, this demonstrates a wide variety of health benefits for people of all ages."

The study was published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine and is part of the Golf and Health Project, which is led by the World Golf Foundation.

NOT JUST A GREAT GOLF CLUB MEMBER

Hornsea Cricket Club Groundsman Recognised by National Magazine!

All Out Cricket each year ask their readers to nominate exceptional people that help to drive grass roots cricket at their club. It is no surprise then that Terry Clappison found himself nominated. Taken by his story, he was shortlisted by the magazine and with the release of the publication this weekend I can confirm that Terry was awarded Groundsman of the Year. I am sure you will all join me in congratulating Terry, and if you wish to get a copy of the magazine to read the article it is available through the link below.

Well done Terry!!!

TREE SPADE

I know I like many others were a little disappointed that the tree spade did not come last week due to mechanical problems. As yet we do not have a date for them to come back but we are top of the list when they have their machinery back up and running.

GREENS

All the bunker banks have been flymo'd and edged this week. Gareth is waiting for a calm day to spray the greens as there is a bit of disease on some of the greens. The greens will also be fertilised with an autumn granular with iron to harden the turf for winter. They have nearly finished cutting all the boundary hedges and ditches. Unfortunately there has been an oil leak from the mower that cuts the paths and semi rough. The machine has been repaired but recovery of the damaged turf on the 3rd hole will take time. Leaf fall has also started and is now a daily task to keep the playing areas as clear of leaves as possible.

MORE WILDLIFE ON THE COURSE

I missed this going into last week's newsletter but I quite liked this that Harvey Scott sent us last Monday. Mon 3rd Oct.

"Hi Yvonne ,

Ru and I had an interesting encounter with a young fox this misty and frosty morning! A young fox came out of the fog and ran off with my ball from off the 2nd green denying me of my "birdie " putt !

We walked over to the Ladies 3rd Tee to find out he'd not run off but was playing about, running after his tail and rolling in the frosty grass!!

Being very inquisitive and unafraid , he came within 4 feet of us at walking pace , sniffed our trolleys and then went past us to sit by the 2nd green again! I never did find my ball , and later he ran after Ruth's drive on the 3rd , picked it up and then ran 20 yards with it in his mouth before dropping it !!

I'm not foxing you!

Harvey"

Paul Duckworth also spotted this little hedgehog on the 15th hole whilst playing in the Captains V Vice Captains match a week last Sunday.

Please if you spot something take a picture and send it to me.
