Pros news

OK so this week's newsletter is a joint effort as I ease myself back in to work and spend more and more time at the club.

Nathan has done a great job though in the last couple of weeks and I think he has quite enjoyed doing the newsletter. Not that he would admit that!

This week unfortunately brought about the first restrictions on the course due to the weather. After the large amount of rain we had on both Sunday and Monday the course took a fair hammering from it and this meant there were no buggies allowed. Also we try and encourage people to carry when the course is like this just to try and save on any potential damage caused. Can we just thank all those that have made the effort to carry, many of who are well in their 70's, and puts some of the younger golfers to shame who still insist on taking electric trollies and large bags!

As it is this time of year we have just ordered a select amount of carry bags if people are needing one.

Already in is PING, Cobra and Titleist with Callaway to come.

If you are looking for a specific bag that we do not have in stock, have a word with Yvonne and we will see if we can get one for you.

THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS GIFT

I'm sure many people reading this will be struggling to think of a present to get for their family members. Well at the minute there is a great offer on personalised Titleist balls.

Whether you want to write a nice message to them or whether you want to write something a bit more jokey the decision is totally in your hands.

Just follow this link and go through each step and should you decide to order then your balls will be delivered in time for Christmas.

EUROPEAN TOUR FINAL EVENT

Before putting any sort of report about this week's final event I thought you all like to see this interview that Rory McIlroy did before the event started. Only a young kid could get away with asking him some of the questions!!

Please click here to view.

So after the interview it was over to the real business with the sixty best golfers from the European Tour season going head to head. In what proved to be a topsy turvy battle all week with no one really breaking away from the field at any point it was local lad Matt Fitzpatrick that made the early move on Sunday to the top of the leader board. Low scores were clearly possible with both Rory McIlroy and Henrik Stenson, after disappointing weeks heading into the final day both shooting 65. This promoted both into the top 10 and secured Stenson the Race to Dubai title. So the back 9 all came down to a battle between Fitzpatrick and Tyrrell Hatton, two young Englishman with great potential in the game. Hatton was one hole ahead of Matt and one shot clear going into his 17th hole. He found to bunker drawing a horrific lie and having to just duff it out, he then followed this a piece of brilliance by holing his 3rd shot to secure a stress free par! Over to Fitzpatrick he found the same bunker but his up and down was much more simple, it all came down to the 18th. Hatton drove off the 18th and unfortunately found the stream running across the fairway this would lead to him taking six. All Matt had to do was birdie the 18th to win and so he did with another great up and down from the greenside bunker.

What a win for the Hallamshire player and a great way to end the European Tour season which starts all over again in one weeks' time in South Africa.

FANTASY GOLF FINAL POSITIONS

18 people joined this year's Hornsea Golf Club Fantasy Golf league. After a very impressive start by Steve Robinson during the season he gradually slipped away to mid table and he has kept very quiet about it in the last few months!! Jon Mitchell again for the 2nd year has topped our league and has led the way for the last few months with none of us getting anywhere near him. The battle for the places below Jon though was a very different matter with many in contention for the runners up places. I shall say nothing more other than I was well happy after the way my season started to finish in the runners up place!! I must say even though I did this each week I didn't enjoy it as much as last year. I did send an email to them earlier in the year and was told it will change again next year.

Please see the final positions by clicking here.

EAST RIDING ALLIANCE

This week we headed to Beverley for the next alliance. It was myself, Nathan and Steve Uzzell with the other pairing of Sam Middleton and Mark Cooke. When Steve and I were stood on the putting green at 7:30 in the morning it was rather fresh but 45 minutes later we were ready for off. On the front 9 we were solid if not spectacular with a similar back 9 as well. We lacked momentum but managed to score a 4 under 65. Sam and Mark looked to be going well and so it proved with them scoring a fantastic 62 which secured them tied 3rd. The final bit of the report is a little bit of guess work as we still haven't received the full results but apparently Heworth scored a 65 and 69 meaning if that is the case we will now be tied with them at the top of the leader board. There is one more event to go before the winter break which is at Filey with the same pairings forming again to hopefully carry us into the lead on our own.

LADY CAPTAINS DRIVE IN

On Tuesday morning we saw our new Lady Captain Sarah Stonier drive in. It was a little different this year though as Sarah has recently had her hip replaced so rather than a drive in a putt in was organised by her Vice-Captain Sue Howell. As has become tradition the ladies committee all dressed up for the occasion and after Sarah's recent time spent in hospital they all came as hospital and Sarah was wheeled out in a wheel chair!! All good fun. Good luck Sarah I'm sure you will have a great year.

MESSAGE FROM YOUR NEW LADY CAPTAIN

This year has passed so quickly and I can't quite believe it is now my turn to be your Lady Captain. It is a great honour for me to have been asked and I will endeavour to do this job with dedication and commitment. I started my golf at Hornsea as a member of the junior section 45 years ago and having been away from Hornsea serving in the Army I returned to live in the area when I left the service. I have been fortunate in being a member of a number of golf clubs during my years playing golf but admit it is Hornsea that I feel the most at home. I believe we have a wonderful Ladies Section who support the golf club in so many ways.

My Captains Charity this year is the Royal British Legion and a project called the "Battle Back Centre" which is a centre that helps injured service personnel get back into work. 100% of the donations received go back to help injured service personnel and their families. I'd like to thank Sue Howell for accepting the role of Vice Captain and wish her well.

WINTER COURSE WORKS

Hopefully by this time next week work will have started on the re-bunkering of the 16th and 17th holes. This is supposed to start on Monday 28th but will depend on Fine Turf completing their previous jobs on time. I shall try and keep you all up to date on Twitter and Facebook with as many pictures as possible.

GREENS

I'm starting this week with a bit of bad news. The tree spade which was due at the end of October unfortunately now will not be coming. It is still not repaired and the ground conditions are far too wet for a large truck to be running all over the course. Instead though we shall be buying some mature trees and some gorse to go around the 7th. These should be in place in the next month. Work has started on trying improving the gents 16th competition tee (pictured) as this was becoming a little dangerous. The railings are now more secure and after the tee has been levelled the flagstones at the front of the tee will be re-laid level. The railings will be re painted but not until the spring. Those that played on Tuesday would have found the course surprisingly dry considering all the rain we had on Monday. I guess this is due to the work Gareth and his team did a few weeks ago with the machine that looks like it has slit all the fairways. It did a lot more than that though and it does seem helped with our course as most around us were closed. It was also noticed that the recent work on the ditches on the course and over Hull road to the right of the 6th was well worth doing as all were running well.

PICS FROM THE COURSE

This week I was sent this picture from Paul Duckworth and shows a lovely rainbow over the clubhouse.

I wonder if there was a pot of gold at the end of it!

Please keep the pictures coming.
