Good afternoon and welcome to my 2nd newsletter of 2017. So far the winter has been kind to us but if we are to believe the forecast I think we are in for a bit of a cold snap.
We have some great things in though to keep you warm and toasty if you do play from amazing windproof clothing to winter mitts and hand warmers.
No definite date yet but towards the end of January we will be emptying the shop for a couple of days to give it all a good clean and this will also give us chance to put a new till system in. I should have more details of dates next week.
There has been a lot in the press and social media recently about the New Callaway Epic Driver. It really does look like Callaway have found something a little special as all the talk is about improved ball speed off the club face which in turn gives improved distance.
My demo clubs should be with us shortly and I am also waiting to hear back from Callaway regarding a date for a fitting day. These clubs are not cheap though so if you are interested start saving your pennies!

ANNUAL HANDICAP REVIEW
At the end of this month the Golf Committee will be carrying out the annual handicap review. I am just giving you all prior warning that if you don't have enough qualifying scores or supplementary scores returned your name will not be picked up by the computer. It needs to be a minimum of 3 but 7 or more gives a better reflection on your ability. An end of year review will also be carried out so if you haven't played in at least 3 qualifying competitions or put 3 supplementary scores in you will lose your c off your handicap. Most clubs now check this before allowing entry to open competitions and here you must have a c next to your handicap to be able to enter the knockout competitions.
HOW FAR DO YOU REALLY HIT IT
Having a read through Twitter earlier in the week I found this article below which I thought was interesting. Many people tell me how far they can hit the ball and at times I find some peoples distances they say hard to believe. I know on a nice day in summer, no wind, with a good strike, I hit my driver 265 yards, my 7 iron 145 yards and my PW 115 yards. As the link below does suggest it is not all about distance but it does make me wonder how many of you all under club thinking you can hit it much further than you think.

EUROPEAN TOUR FANTASY LEAGUE
I have had a few people asking when this is going to start again but as yet there is nothing on the website. I could be wrong but I guess it will start like last year with The Masters. I have sent them an email and will let you all know what they come back with.
SILVER TEE IRON CHALLENGE
This Sunday we have a fantastic entry for the Silver Tee Iron Challenge with nearly every slot taken. This will be a first for Hornsea so I shall be intrigued at what score wins. Remember there are separate prizes for Ladies and Gents but more important to remember will be to take all your woods and hybrid clubs out of your bag!! Good luck to all.
GREENS
All the staff are now back at work after most of them took a break over Christmas and the New Year. Work has now started to finish off all the bunkers on the 16th and 17th. This includes edging the bunkers then lining them all with turf. As in previous years the bunkers on these holes will remain GUR until the start of the season.
PONDS
It was hard work for our working party put together by Paul Duckworth but the small team of Lindsay Ward, Chris Reed, Darrell Slingsby and Paul have made a start on improving the ponds at Hornsea. Last Friday they started on the 13th pond but spent most of the day on the 11th clearing leaves, branches, weed etc. It was quite noticeable to me that they really could do with some better equipment though so if any of you have had a pond and have anything kicking about that you think might help please drop it off in the shop so I can pass it on to Paul. Waders, long handle rakes, grapple hooks etc. would all be a great help.
