Pros news

Well we had our first closure of the year on Friday and Saturday. We took a lot of calls in the shop asking why it was closed.

I took this picture on the 16th at 9.50 on Saturday morning.

As you can see we still had plenty of snow but not only that the ground was frozen solid and was like walking on concrete.

We then had heavy rain on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

This just sat on top of the frozen ground and it really wasn't good at all.

If any of you would like to have a go in the Captains Challenge the sheet is now up in the clubhouse with dates that are available marked quite clearly.

Please if you do put your name down to play make a note of it in your own diary as lots of games got cancelled last year due to people forgetting.

As is always the plan Allan and myself intend going the whole year unbeaten.

The challenge is set!

Our man with the steady hand is now well on the way to putting those who won trophies in 2016 names up in gold. It really is amazing watching him work.

I really don't like to go on and on about this but yet again I am getting lots of complaints about pitch marks. We have only had a handful of visitors playing recently so it can only be members. Remember it is your course so please look after it. I had one member come to tell me he had repaired over 100 pitch marks in one round, 27 on the 11th hole!! If everyone made an effort we should not have this problem. Don't forget too look at which hole we would like you to look after.

Please click here to take a look.

We shall be emptying the shop this Sunday afternoon and giving it all a really good clean. This will probably take a couple of days so please bear with us as only sweets and drinks will be available. We are also putting in a new till system so hopefully by the end of the week we should be back up and running as normal. Wish us luck!

EUROPEAN TOUR FANTASY LEAGUE

This Thursday see's the start of the Fantasy Golf League. If you want to join the Hornsea League follow the below link.

https://fantasyrace.europeantour.com/game/myteam

To join the Hornsea Golf Club League you will need the code DfPxmwDHOM As I mentioned last year it really is great fun and does help to keep an interest in the European Tour. I am also setting up a little side bet of £5 each for those that have entered. There will be cash prizes given to the top three places at the end of the season for those that want to take part. If you have joined the league and want to take part in this please put your £5 in an envelope with your name on and hand it in to the Pro Shop. This is not compulsory however the more people that enter the better the prizes will be.

SILVER TEE IRON CHALLENGE

Unfortunately due to the course closure this event did not go ahead on Sunday. We have rearranged this for Sunday 12th February. A new sheet is up in the clubhouse now for you to put your names on. Tees will not be carried forward. It was great to see so many people wanting to play last time so get your names down early so you don't miss out.

HISTORY OF HORNSEA GOLF CLUB

I have recently been looking through some of the old archives of the club trying to find out a little more about when Alister MacKenzie the famous course architect came to Hornsea. I am doing this as I would like the Club to join the Alister MacKenzie Golf Society which would mean as members here you could get cheaper green fees at some of the courses he was involved with. All of which are very good. Augusta been his most famous, not that you would get on cheaper!!

I was so pleased a few weeks ago to find in the bottom of a box in the Clubs loft not only some original letters but also the very original course map that was drawn out by Alex Herd. Well with the help of one of the members, Graham Winship, who works in the printing industry he has been able to re produce the map and some of the original letters from Alister MacKenzie and James Braid. I shall get these framed and hopefully they will be up in the Club for all to see shortly. I for one feel the history of the Club is very important. Here are a couple of pictures to tease you!

RAKING BUNKERS

I know I mentioned earlier about pitch marks and I don't like telling you all how to do things but I thought this was an interesting video that was on Twitter earlier this week. I know he has a very nice large rake but it does show how you should rake a bunker and not how 99% of people do.

GREENS

Work has continued this week on edging and lining the new bunkers on the 16th and 17th. Some great shapes to them too. All the tee's have also been spiked as well as all the normal day to day setting up of the course. Some of the lads have also been to the BIGGA Greenkeepers trade show at Harrogate this week.

PICS FROM THE COURSE

No pictures this week but you might remember me putting the picture on and asking the question as to why would anyone take a trolley over the soil mound on the 16th. I have a reason why. It was a run-a-way electric trolley that was not in the hands of anyone. It had been accidently turned on whilst getting a club out near the 15th green!!! Maybe a good job it wasn't on the pond hole…… The trolley eventually finished in the trees to the left of the 16th and took the owner a little while to figure out what had happened and where to find it.
