Stretton's News
Good afternoon. I hope this week's newsletter finds you all well. We have had another funny week weather wise as we just can't seem to lose this strong cold wind and the course is now very firm indeed, with many commenting about how far the ball is going, but struggling to stop it on the greens. It really is playing like a true links course at the moment.
You should all be thinking of playing with a slightly softer ball to help when conditions are this firm. We have quite a few different options in the shop.
Yvonne and myself have been very busy over the last few months on updating the Hornsea Golf Club website. The idea is that the new website will be more up to date and easier to use. Not only for you, but also for us as we add content and information to it most days. We have one slight issue though and that is the restricted members' area, which if you want to look at you will need to apply for a new password.
You can do this by contacting Yvonne by email, office@hornseagolfclub.co.uk. This area allows members to look at board minutes, club polices, etc. Please remember your old password for this area will not work on the new website. Please note the user name and password for the tee bookings area will remain the same. We hope you all like the new look and find it easy to use. www.hornseagolfclub.co.uk.
I do love it when I see something funny relating to golf or golfers. This picture was put on Facebook at the end of last week. I guess they had had some sort of problem with their trolley and this was the best solution they could find! Somebody did ask me if they had maybe got the idea from the trolley used by Pete Stamford!
Just a reminder that next Saturday is the first of the Gold Medals, so if you are playing before 1 o'clock it is compulsory entry into the competition. This was a decision made by the golf committee a good few years ago now and for the majority it works well.
Clubhouse Notices, Results And Knockout Draws
Can I ask all members that if you need a scrap of paper please ask behind the bar or in the shop. Please do not tear pieces of paper of the sheets in the clubhouse.
Not only does this then take time to have to re-do them, it makes the notices etc. look untidy. These pictures show a couple from just this week of were paper has been torn from notices.
PING Demo Day
Just a reminder that it is the PING Demo Day here on Tuesday 30th May 12 till 4.
Please book in the shop or click here if you would like an appointment.
Ladies Matches
Unfortunately, last week our Ladies B Team suffered their first defeat of the season going down to Skidby Lakes. A special mention though goes to Jean Prout who managed Hornsea's only win. Always tough playing away though girls. You have had a great start to the season.
Hornsea Over 50's Open Am Am 10th May
Fantastic weather conditions at last greeted all the 38 teams that played in Hornsea's 2nd Over 50's Am Am of the season. The course played tough with us having no rain though for a long time now but the comments from all that played yet again were fantastic. Again, it was a pleasure to sit on the desk checking cards etc. when everyone enjoys coming here so much.
Please note though next year's event is nearly full already so if you want to play please don't delay in getting your entry in. Call 01964 534989 to book or inquire about more events we hold here at Hornsea. Prizes are now in credit at the Professional shop at Hornsea for the top 7 places. Thanks to all who played and we hope to see you all back at Hornsea soon.

Monday Night Texas Scramble & Silver Tee Iron Challenge
This Monday night see's the first of the Monday evening shotgun events with a Texas Scramble teeing off at 5pm. Quite a few of the teams look short of players looking at the sheet. The sheet is also up for the next event which is the Silver Tee Iron Challenge which is on Monday 5th June. Both of these events need more support. Please look at the sheets which are up in the Rolston Bar and put your names down if you are available.

Big thanks go to Paul Lockwood for running it again and sorting out all the results.
Yorkshire Spring Meeting At Hornsea
Last Thursday it was a pleasure for Hornsea to host Yorkshires first Members Meeting of the year. 68 pairs from all over Yorkshire came and although the wind again was up the comments again about our course were all fantastic.
I have taken a few photos of the comments which can be found in the visitors' comments book which I mention later in this newsletter. They should make us all proud of our Club we are all part off. If you are a visitor reading my newsletter trust me the course at the moment is great and if you fancy a game please give us a call. 01964 534989.
The prize winners which Yorkshire will contact were;

European Tour Fantasy League
No event last week and not many of the top players are in Portugal this week, so might be a few changes to the overall table next week with a bit of luck!
Scratch League
Both of Hornsea's Gents Scratch League sides have made a great start to the season with the A team winning 4-0 at home against Cottingham and the B team 3-1 away at Bridlington Links.
Well done boys. Keep up the good work.
Gents East Riding Union Team Championship
The East Riding Union Team Championship was held at Ganstead last Sunday in very tough condition. The course was very hard and bouncy and a really strong cold wind was blowing. The team from Hull Golf Club led the way after the first 18 holes by a considerable margin, as our team from Hornsea, Luke Robinson, Leigh Gawley, Ady Rosindale and Nathan Wright all struggled in the conditions and found themselves trailing back in 6th place 18 shots behind.
It was a little different in the afternoon though, as the Hornsea team all got their heads down and tried to grind out some good golf in conditions that were getting colder by the hour. Luke came in first with a best of the day score of 71, Leigh then came in with a 73. Nathan who had struggled on the first 12 holes but played the last 6 in under par came in with a 79 and Ady Rosindale a 76.
Great scores in the conditions and the pressure was now on Hull. Hull did just manage to hang on though, winning by 4 in the end, but that great effort by Hornsea in the second round lifted them into 2nd place overall. Well done team Hornsea. Great effort in those conditions. Thanks also to Joe Palmer who went in the morning to give support to our team until I arrived in the afternoon.
Greens
First thing I have to mention is that we have had yet another divot taken out of the greens at Hornsea. It had to be a member too, as it was taken on Saturday sometime between 10 and 11. Nobody as yet has admitted or apologised for doing it.
This is now happening far too often.
Taking a wild swipe with a putter on a green, which is all it can be, is unacceptable. Please if you are playing with someone that does this can you have a word with them please and then make sure either they report it or report them.
Cutting again is the main priority at the moment, as even though the weather is not great, the grass is still growing. The greens are getting water despite what people might think, but there is a little problem with the control box which sets the times, but this is in hand. Terry Cutts is busy at the moment rubbing down the hand rails around the 16th back tee and once done these will be re painted.
Can I just remind all golfers again about divot bags, as not too many people are taking them and it really does make a difference.
It was a busy day on Tuesday and I took this picture at 1.30 and you can clearly see only a few had been taken. As mentioned before, it is your course, please help to look after it.
The Course Record Was On!
On Saturday whilst keeping an eye on the computer as scores came in from the gents' competition, I really thought the course record was going to be beaten by a 17 handicap golfer who set off like a dream. Eagle, Birdie, Birdie. What a start. A slight slip at the 4th with a Double Bogey, but hit straight back at the 5th with another Birdie. The man was on fire! 17 handicap too remember! Unfortunately, the great form left him a little, but was still only one over par gross in the end for the first 10 holes. Could he keep it going….
As the scores were entered I kept rubbing my eyes as a great round suddenly took a turn for the worse. Medal golf took its toll on another golfer as 23 shots were dropped in the last 8 holes, which included a 12, 7, 7 finish. He kept going though and I'm sure was disappointed as the course record stands for another day. I won't mention who it was, but his card is below for your perusal!

Great Comments To Finish This Week
Some of you might not believe this, but at times it is hard listening to complaints about the great course and facility we have at Hornsea.
It is great then to look at the visitors' comments book and see some great reviews about everything we do at our Club.
I know they are hard to read, but please take your time to read them if you get chance. I have included a couple of pictures of some of the reviews here for you.
