Pros news

Stretton's News

Good afternoon to you all. Can I firstly just thank Yvonne for taking me away last week for an early birthday treat. She took me to Raithwaite Estate Country Retreat, which is just north of Whitby. Fantastic it was too. If any of you have a special occasion coming up I would highly recommend it. It is just so relaxing and the food is amazing. Well worth saving up for a visit. http://www.raithwaiteestate.com/

With the first few days of this week, the weather and the forecast are finally heading for summer. This means we have started to see shorts being worn at last.

For sure some of the legs on show have not seen sunshine for a while!

If your shorts have seen better days or maybe you fancy some new ones, check out our selection of shorts that are on the shop floor now.

Silver Tee Iron Challenge

Monday June 5th was supposed to be the Silver Tee Iron Challenge. Due to lack of support this event has unfortunately been cancelled. Please keep your eye on the board, as the next Monday Night Scramble on 17th July is going to be a 4 clubs and a putter challenge from the Silver Tees. Prizes will be available for ladies and gents.

Captain's Challenge

It has been a while since we have played a challenge due to one thing or another, but on Sunday Paul Lockwood and Malcolm Train were our opposition. We had a great game and for a long time looked well in control of the game as Malc was out of sorts and struggling with his game. A brave come back was made though, which meant I had to up my game a little. Birdies at 15,16 and 17 saw us come out winning 3&1. Thanks though go to Paul and Malc for making it such an enjoyable morning.

Another Hole In One

Well I have no idea as to how this happening, but yet again we have had a hole in one. This time it was on the 12th hole on Sunday and the man to do so was Iain Edmiston. Well done Iain.

Ladies news

Ladies Matches & Jan Elder's Weekend League Report

On Monday the scratch team played against Hickleton golf club, who had some very strong players including a plus 3 player, who is flying back to play on the American circuit on Friday. Well done to Angela Clappison for taking her to the 14th. Nicky Salzl had the only team win 6&5. However despite the result, the team remains positive and are looking forward to the next match vs Fulford in a couple of weeks time.

Team Representatives: Angela Clappison, Sharon Cane, Lyndis Johns, Nicky Salzl, Caroline Barker, Wendy Lockwood and Myra Smith.

Unfortunately, the team had 2 losses; away to Malton 0-3 and away to Hessle 1-2 despite a valiant effort by Sue Howell. (It was the weekend of the Annual Dinner Dance and the team training in the bar on Saturday night was perhaps not a good idea on this occasion, although we did have a fantastic evening!).

All was not lost however, as we did secure a home win against Hessle on Sunday 21st May 2-1 to even the balance! Well done Ladies you have 2 wins and 2 losses with 2 matches left to play. Good luck away at Sandmoor next Sunday.

Knockout Matches

Just a quick reminder to you all that the closing date for the next round of some of the knockouts is quickly approaching. Please if you have a game to play try and get it arranged as soon as possible. When I checked on Tuesday there was still 27 games to be played by Sunday 4th June. I have seen a few of these booked in, but certainly not all.

Nerves Of Steel From The Vice

On Sunday two of our players represented the East Riding Union away at Teeside. Luke Robinson had a successful day getting a half in the morning foursomes and a win in the singles. In the afternoon with the match tied, it all came down the last man on the course our Vice Captain, Rees Brown. Standing on the par five 18th tee, the adrenaline would have been flowing and knees knocking. After 2 solid shots Rees had found the green, whilst his opponent had about 5 foot left for a par 5. Knowing 2 putts from distance would be good enough he putted up to about 4 foot. His opponent holed his, which meant Rees knew he had a putt to win his game and the overall match.

With all players and executives watching on he stepped up and despatched it right in the middle of the hole. Well done Rees, good practice under pressure for the Captains Challenges next year! The full report can be seen by clicking here.

Gents Scratch League

Two great results again for our Gents Scratch League sides. The A team beat Beverley A at home 3-1 and the B team travelled to the KP Club and managed a 2-2 draw. Both great results and both sides remain unbeaten. The boys have a rest week this week, so hopefully we will see them back winning again in a weeks time with the first team playing away against Scarborough North Cliff and the second team at home against Driffield. Look out for the results on the Hornsea Golf Club twitter and on the scratch league website. The tables have been updated and you can see the up to date tables here.

European Tour Fantasy League

Another hard week to pick a strong team with many of the top golfers again not playing. Funny how quite a few in the Hornsea Golf Club League went for Eduardo Molinari. He was not a good pick!

Unfortunately, I had him in my team too! Leading the way this week was Douglas Griebenouw, but Paul Gibson is still heading the overall leader board. Big money at stake this week though so we shall see if someone can topple him!

Junior news

Promising Results

Some good news and some not so good news for the juniors this week. On Sunday Will Marshall had a fantastic 4 under, nett 64 at Brough in the Junior Open, which carried the team of himself, Matt McDonnell and Albert Anderson to the team prize.

Harry Anderson
and Alfie Anderson also played at Brough. The Junior Opens are a good experience for all the boys and hopefully we see them winning a few more this year.

Now to the not so good news! On Monday night the boys hosted Hessle in Junior League. Will Marshall played first, taking on Hessle's Joe Allenby. This would prove to be a tricky game for Will and hopefully he picked up a few tips from Joe, who is an experienced member of the Yorkshire boys team. Second was Matt McDonnell, who played a solid game to win 3&2. Finally, Albert Anderson played Ben Patterson, who the previous day had won the best nett prize at Brough. This would prove to be another tricky match with Ben carrying on his form from Brough and prevailing 3&2.

A 2-1 defeat, but as with all of these games it's a learning curve for the boys and it is great for them to be both winning and learning at the same time.

Growing The Game

Paul for the last 4 weeks has been going into the local Hornsea Primary school. This week he invited them all to the Golf Club. 75 children, yes 75 all came up to the club and had a great time.

This really does give the children a great insight into this great game we play and I'm sure we shall see a lot of them back again at the junior lessons.

Well done Paul for such a great effort. Who knows the next Tiger Woods could be amongst them.

Course news

Pics From The Course

A visitor on Monday spotted another snake on the course, this time just a small one near the 15th ditch. Remember anything of interest if you can get a quick picture that would be great.

Greens

Fly mowing and edging bunkers took place on Monday. When writing this on Tuesday the plan was to do a light verticut on Wednesday to thin out the surface of the greens. Pond banks and ditch banks have also been cut. After all the rain and increased temperatures grass growth has improved.

With softer surfaces pitch marks are becoming more apparent, so please make sure you all repair at least one pitch mark per green.

It Happens To The Best!

I just thought I would finish this week by making you all feel better. I saw this clip on Sky Sports on Saturday of one of the world's best golfers Jordon Spieth taking 5 off the tee!

He finished with an 8 and ended up missing the cut by 1 shot. Just shows it can happen to the best.
