Welcome to this week's newsletter, a couple great trips away and some pics from the past this week!

 Stretton's News

I’m starting this week with some old photos of the course which Jon Bickerdike brought in a good few years ago of his grandparents who used to play at Hornsea. I have put them on before, but for our newer members and for those that might have missed them, here they are again. If anyone has any old pictures of the course taken at any time I would love to see them. Especially any from when the course has been flooded in the past.

AGM - Apologies

The Golf Clubs Annual General Meeting and Members’ Meeting is on Thursday 24th August from 7.30pm, all members are welcome to attend. Unfortunately, myself and Yvonne gave our apologies to the Board of Directors at the beginning of the year as we will not be able to attend this year. Many of you know our daughter Natasha; she will be collecting her GCSE results on the same day and we have arranged plans with her to celebrate her success (fingers crossed).

We are both concerned at missing an important event in the club’s calendar, however our family is taking precedent. We are sure that the directors present at the meeting will be more than capable of answering any questions and if not, they can be addressed post meeting. This is the first AGM I have missed since starting in 1999 and the first Yvonne has missed since starting in her new post 5 years ago.

Captains Away Day To Easingwold

Last Friday 32 members went to Easingwold Golf Club for the Captain’s Away Day. What a great day it was too from start to finish, with us all even having a fly-by from the RAF! One 4 ball started the day with a pint of lager with their bacon sandwiches instead of a coffee. Well I think it was more than one in the end and this showed in their scores!

The course was a good test for all with large trees causing problems for most! With quite a strong wind blowing the scoring was much better than I thought it was going to be. The prize winners are listed below. I must also mention Micky Moulds for taking us in one of his executive coaches. We really did travel in style this time. This year, Howard Palmer won the Ray Busfield Salver, Tony Barron won the Dick Roach Tankard, and Ian Sims won the Louis Purshouse Trophy.

The Past Captains then enjoyed a meal in the clubhouse. In keeping with the tradition, the meal was completed with cheese provided by the current captain, Allan Scarlett, and port, provided by the immediate past captain Craig Gawthorpe.

European Tour Fantasy League

I had another fairly good week last week even though I only really had Rory that played well in my team. I was one of a few though that had him as my Captain. Dave Prescott came out as this week’s top scorer though by quite a few points. Another poor week from Paul Gibson though means the gap is closing!

Good Work Boys

Two of our juniors have done well this last week. Firstly, Will Marshall finished with 2nd nett in the 36 hole East Riding Boys Championship that was played at Hainsworth Park last week and our Junior Captain, Matthew McDonnell, has had his first call up to represent the East Riding Boys team. Well done and keep up the good work boys.

Rain And More Rain

On Tuesday it was a little damp at Hornsea. In fact, over a 24 hour period it was the most amount of rain fall Gareth has ever recorded. 61mm or 2 1/2 inches = roughly 67,808 gallons per acre and would weigh just over 282 tons per acre. The golf course covers a lot of acres. That's a lot of water!
