Welcome to this week's newsletter with all the latest news from Hornsea Golf Club.
Enjoy the read. |
Stretton's News... So, it was my birthday yesterday (21 again!) and Yvonne has taken me away for a couple of days to settle in the Yorkshire Dales. I shall be back by the time you receive this but most of this week’s newsletter will be down to Nathan.
Today sees the start of the European Tour's flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. The best players the European Tour have to offer will be competing and to me this is the beginning of the run up to The Open Championship.
Apart from the US Open the majority of our best players will be competing mainly in Europe now gearing up for the test of Carnoustie. Back to this week though and although I won’t be making any predictions for a winner but one player that would be good to see back in form is Danny Willett. I mention his name as he gave a really good interview with the Daily Mail the other day about his struggles since his Masters victory. With him being a Yorkshire boy it would be great to see him competing at the top of the leader board again.

Captains challenge
With various things on for Rees and a number of things at the Golf Club, we haven’t got a Captains Challenge on a Sunday for quite a few weeks now. If anyone would like to challenge us to a game on a Saturday afternoon if our diaries and Club events permit, we would like to hear from you.

Past Captains AM AM Just a gentle reminder to all Past Captains to make sure you let Yvonne know in the Shop if you want a team or are unavailable for the Past Captains Am Am. This event is organised by the very hard working Frank Palin who puts a lot of time and effort into organising this event.
Any funds raised always go back into the club. This will be Franks last year of organising it so please support him. If you are unable to play a donation of some sort of raffle prize would be appreciated.
Matty Raybould Fundraiser
As I’m sure a few of you are aware Matty jets off to America in August to further his education and his golf at a university across the pond. To enable him to do this, he is having a small fundraiser here on the afternoon of Sunday, 1st July.
For more information see the poster below and if you want to book a time contact us in the Shop.

Tour De Yorkshire recognition
It was nice last Friday for someone from the Tour De Yorkshire to pop in and present Hornsea Golf Club with a certificate in recognition of the Golf Club’s support of the Tour.
The hard work by Darrell Slingsby and his partner Elaine in painting the bikes and organising the poster, along with Paul Duckworth who helped put the bikes up, it makes your efforts worthwhile. Well done.

European Tour Fantasy Race To Dubai
I don’t even want to talk about this week’s performance by my picked team. Not one player made it through! Anyone who picked Adrian Otaegui though did quite well. I can’t believe that Paul Lockwood had him as his captain. Some inspired pick that one. |
Scratch League An exceptionally successful Friday night was had by the Scratch Team players last week. The first team played away against Beverley first team which is always one of the toughest games of the season and managed to come away with a fantastic 3-1 victory.
The second team played at home against Cottingham, also managing a win by the margin of 3.5-0.5.
On Friday night the first round of the Yorkshire Scratch Foursomes was played which took Leigh Gawley and Rees Brown to Fulford to play against a pairing from Moortown. This would prove to be more success as they managed a victory on the first extra hole. As you can see below we have one very proud captain.
The updated table for the Scratch League is in the link below. You will see its very good news for the first team with the second team also moving up the table as well. Both teams have a free week this week so lets hope they will be back winning in two weeks’ time.

Junior League Junior league starts back up again on Monday with the boys playing away at Hull. lets hope for more positive news. Click here to keep up to date.
Ladies Team
On Friday the Ladies Scratch Team played Selby Ladies. The course and weather was excellent so all that was needed was a solid performance from the team to secure victory. The players performed amazingly taking the points after securing a 5 1/2 to 1 1/2 victory. Team members as follows. Di Kingswood Angela Clappison Nicky Salzl Rosie Atkin Caroline Barker Lyndis Johns and Wendy Lockwood. The team next travel to Thirsk on Friday where it’s hoped they can secure the first away win of the campaign.
A well earned draw for the Weekend League at Roundhay on Sunday, 20th May. The course and greens were very challenging at this nine hole municipal course. Well played Sarah Ahearne Jan Elder and Sue Howell.
2 Wins 1 Draw and 1 Loss so far with 2 matches left to play. The ladies admitted after playing at Roundhay they really appreciate our course and greens. A big thank you to Gareth and his team for all the work they put in to creating a course for everyone to be proud of.

Pictures from the Course
On Saturday evening myself and Sam took his little lad out on the Course as he wanted to go and see some fish in the ponds.
Whilst out there it got me thinking if the dream hole was still there. Can anyone tell me where this photo was taken?
Click here to let me know your answer. |
Another interesting picture this week was taken of Matt McDonnell’s ball on the 5th hole. Remember when your ball goes into a tree it doesn’t always fall down.
Also seen on the course this week was a baby snake as seen above spotted by Gareth on the 18th fairway. |
Pond claims another!
On Saturday Malcolm Train became the latest member to lose control of his trolley and it finish in the pond on the 11th. He was playing with Rees Brown our Captain who was very quick to get his phone out and record him trying to retrieve all his equipment with a little help! Rees obviously found it quite funny as you can tell from the videos below.

Greens
One main thing for everyone to remember from the greens side of things this week, is the bunkers on the 2nd, 3rd and 15th are now all in play.
Also on Monday the greens were verti-cut and had a little bit of dressing and fertiliser put on them to keep them ready for the coming months.

The importance of getting the basics right shouldn’t be overlooked. Fundamentals, such as making sure you’re aiming correctly and ensuring your ball position is spot on for each club, can go a long way to helping you play better golf. Your posture is one of the most important, so remember to check it the next time you go to the range…. |
| Correct posture, and especially a consistent spine angle, helps you to swing up and down on the same plane for more consistent ball striking. Start by standing tall, with your feet shoulder width apart and your weight on the balls of your feet, as shown above. |
| Next, tilt towards the ball from your hips. Try to stop your back becoming rounded, which is a less dynamic position. You’ll also want to keep your shoulder blades flat and your chip up, which maintains as straight an angle as possible from the base of your spine. |
| Now you’ve created an athletic spine angle, let your arms hang naturally below your shoulders. Your hands should then grip the club roughly a hand span away from your thighs. Finally, add a little knee flex as shown above so that you feel athletic and relaxed. |
