Welcome to this week's newsletter with all the latest news from Hornsea Golf Club.
Enjoy the read. |
Stretton's News... I’m starting this week’s newsletter with a bit of sad news. Many of you will have heard or maybe even had lesson’s years ago with the old Professional here Percy Wright. Percy was my father’s uncle. On Monday it was the funeral of his sister Gwen Houlton, the last of the generation; she was 105! For those trying to work it out she was my great auntie. The reason for mentioning this though was it was actually really nice to meet up with my twin sisters and brother and we even managed to get out for a meal on Monday night. This is not something we do very often. Just tends to be weddings and as in this case funerals. |

You will all have to put up with Nathan this Saturday in the shop as Yvonne and myself are taking Natasha to look round Sheffield University. Over the next few months we will also be visiting Leeds, York and possibly Norwich. My little girl is definitely growing up! |
Gents Invitation Day
The sheet that is up in the Rolston Bar for Gents Invitation Day which takes place on Saturday 30th June is filling up nicely with only five times left when I did this. Please remember to book in four balls only. It is a better ball stableford off yellow tees and the price of £25 per pair includes a meal afterwards and prizes.

Hornsea 1st Division Open On Saturday 2nd June, Hornsea hosted the Hull and District 1st Division Open. A really disappointing entry of only 64 people played with some local clubs not sending any entries at all. This is something that we shall look at and will be discussed in detail. It was great though doing the cards and listening to all the positive comments about the course and conditions. There was only one moan about the greens so I guess out of that field that is not too bad. Scoring throughout the day was really quite good with many playing to or just slightly over their handicap. CSS all day didn't move from 72. With just four three balls to come in the heavens well and truly opened. I really don't think I have ever seen a spell of rain like it. Out on the course was Hornsea member Leigh Gawley who was going very well. A great finish to the front 9 with three birdies saw him reach the turn in 32 shots. He was going well on the back 9 but the weather certainly played it's part in him really hanging on not just to his score but also his clubs on the last few holes! 70 gross in the end though which saw him take both the best gross and also the best nett prizes. Not bad off a one handicap and a shame he can only take one prize! |

Hornsea Open Mixed On Sunday 3rd June we held our Mixed Open Am Am. This is always a great event and teams from all over Yorkshire attend. At 4pm the night before after two hours of really heavy rain the event was looking in doubt. A dry night and after some fantastic work by the greens staff in the early hours the course was playable but the bunkers were all out of play. This decision I'm sure would have gone down well with some but maybe did have an effect on the scores. For two people though, this was not a problem as a gent from KP and a lady from Cottingham, not in the same team both made hole in ones. Now that doesn't happen very often on one day! So as for the winners, 89pts was a fantastic score which led for most of the day and many found that score amazing. It wasn't good enough though as towards the end of the day this score after a chip in at the last was beaten by one point. Below is a picture of the leading scores and those highlighted are now in credit in the Professional Shop at Hornsea. Many thanks to all that played. We already have people booking for next year. I am also thinking about running a Mixed Open for over 65's. If you are interested please let me know.

East Riding Union Members AM AM Ganstead Now I don’t have a lot of details about this result but I saw a result on social media earlier this week that interested me. On Thursday 31st May, Ganstead Park was the host club for the East Riding Union Members Am Am. This event is open to anyone no matter how old. I was ever so pleased to see that a Hornsea four came in second place with a fantastic score of 90pts. This team consisted of Brian Kirton, Don Stead, Tony Barron and Dak Roberts. Well done boys. That was a fantastic score. Scratch League Last week’s Scratch League saw the top two teams heading into the fixture play. Hessle first team and our first team is always a hotly contested fixture with our boys coming out on top 2.5 to 1.5. Good wins for Nick Raybould and Leigh Gawley with Sam Middleton earning half a point. The second team didn’t have a great showing away at Burstwick on Friday night losing 3-1 but a big well done to junior member Matt McDonnell for winning his first scratch league game. This week the first team are playing away against Scarborough North Cliff and the second team are at home against top of the league Brid Links. Let’s hope for some more positive results. European Tour Fantasy Race To Dubai
Interesting week on the Fantasy League this week but no big moves by anyone. Mike Smith still leads the way overall but David Maxey has closed the gap slightly. |
Junior League There haven’t been many junior league matches played so far but as you can see from the link below the boys are in a great position after three games with them still to lose an individual game. Click here to keep up to date. |
Ladies Team
The Weekend League Warriors fought a tough battle at Malton playing the Park & Derwent courses for a change. The Derwent was a tricky 9 holes which the Warriors enjoyed but alas the battle was lost 2-1. Well played Jan Elder, Barbara Teal and Debbie Goddard-Taylor. On Monday, the Scratch Team travelled to Selby for their final match, against tough opponents the ladies came out on top winning 4 ½ 2 ½ . The result currently puts the team on top of Division two but the team must wait now to see the outcomes of close opposition results. Congratulations to the team today of Di Kingswood, Angela Clappison, Nicky Salzl, Rosie Atkin, Caroline Barker, Lyndis Johns & Wendy Lockwood and not forgetting our super sub Myra Smith who has played in two of our matches and Sharon Cane who is currently training to be an ambulance driver but will be there next year if and hopefully when we are promoted once again to Yorkshire Division one. A fantastic achievement for a small ladies’ section of a great club!

Past Captains AM AM 06/06/2018 Yesterday was the Hornsea Past Captains Am Am. It was a shotgun start and nearly every tee was taken. The weather which was a little damp in the morning had improved slightly by the 1pm tee off and although a little breezy, the conditions were good for golf. It was nice to see so many of the teams comprising of Past Captains from other clubs playing with Hornsea Captains from their year. There were 3 ladies prizes and 3 gents prizes and the winners were as follows. Ladies 1st 76pts Wendy Lockwood, Caroline Barker, Lyndis Johns, Nicky Salzl 2nd 76pts Sue Howell, Emma Hanson, Terri Thompson, Jill Marshall 3rd 62pts Sylvia Charter, Mags Gee, Pam Mounfield, Jan Jackson

Yet again Frank Palin had done a fantastic job in getting as many Hornsea Past Captains to enter teams and to donate prizes. This was Franks last time organizing the event and he will be a hard act to follow. Over the last 19 years he has raised a lot of money for the Club which is always spent on improvements to the course etc. I must also mention his wife Gill who always does a fantastic job organizing the raffle. They both received a small gift from the club in recognition of their hard work. |

Pictures from The Course
No pictures from the course this week but I do have a couple of videos for you. The first one if you look carefully is of a fish spotted in the 11th pond. Quite a few people have mentioned about seeing fish in there recently. Maybe throw some fish food in next time you play. The other video was taken by Yvonne on Saturday afternoon when the heavens opened. She was stranded in the shop as we had a river flowing through the archway. I really can’t explain just how heavy it was for about an hour leaving the course absolutely saturated. |
Note Dropped Off from a Member On Tuesday morning Keith Berry a long-standing member dropped a note off in the shop and I thought I would share it with you. 05.06.18 Stretton
You still hear them calling, not as often as we used to, but you rarely see them. Yesterday my golf partner and I saw two cuckoos flying together low over the third fairway disappearing over the sixteenth and calling as they went. What a pleasure. We seem lacking in wildlife at the moment. We saw only one moorhen with two chicks. A pair of greylag geese on the pond by the fourteenth with only one gosling, they usually have a brood of five or more. And come to think of it, where are the rabbits. Regards Keith Berry

Thanks Keith. As I’ve said before if anyone has anything they would like me to add to the newsletter either send an email or drop something like this off for me. |
Greens Report
After all the rain on Saturday we really have a serious grass factory at the moment and it is hard to just keep on top of all the playing areas. I popped out to see Gareth on Tuesday and all the staff were all busy cutting fairways, 1st cut of rough, rough (now shorter), tee’s and pond banks. This was after all the greens had been cut and rolled. It really is non-stop for them at the moment. Bunkers were also a problem after so much rain and until they dried out they were unable to fully rake them until later in the week. The height of rough has now been lowered but this has caused a bit of an issue with lots of cut grass all over. This will be blown off when they get chance. The greens on Monday were sprayed with calcium, magnesium and iron and have already greened up. I have had a few comments regarding the copses looking untidy and I have spoken to Gareth about these. Again, this comes down to what areas have to be prioritised as there really is so much to do. They will be done though. |
Thank You... Many thanks to those members who have popped in the Shop this week to wish both myself and Stret well with our new Managements tasks. You heard from Stret in last weeks newsletter so to myself for this week. I am looking forward to working with the Clubhouse team, having met with them all now we are all keen to get the Clubhouse moving forward and seeing more members, visitors and locals using the Club. The Social Committee is to be re-formed and we are looking for volunteers to attend the planning meetings and more importantly give ideas and sell places at the upcoming events we wish to hold. We plan to hold meetings every other month so it won’t be too much of a commitment. If anyone is interested in helping out please let me know. Coming up for all you football fans is the World Cup, as always the Clubhouse is open in the evenings and Sam will be laying on a food deal for any football fans wanting to watch the England matches. Don’t forget the bar is open to the public so bring along family, friends and neighbours. Captains Weekend is fast approaching and our Club Captain; Rees has a great night’s entertainment planned, further details will follow next week, however reserve the night of Saturday 7th July and dust that Dinner Jacket off I am sure we are in for a treat. Finally, for this week, the much requested Sunday lunches will be starting again very soon, probably once a month for now and as demand increases we hope to get them running on a more regular basis. As Stret said last week, please if you have any comments, ideas, criticism to make pop in and let me know, if you have some ideas for events but don’t wish to commit to being a regular on the Social Committee please let me know, all assistance from members is greatly appreciated and helps keep our members club alive. We’re sure the majority of you will agree that having a distance device on the course is a huge benefit, going hand-in-hand with knowing how far you hit each club. For those of you in the market for a laser rangefinder or GPS device, here are a few options within Garmin’s range to suit different preferences. |
Pinpoint laser accuracy There's one standout feature to Garmin's Z80 laser rangefinder that sets it apart from all others on the market. As well as giving precise distances up to 350 yards away, the Z80 also includes hole maps that are integrated into the viewfinder, which display the shape of the hole and provide front and back distances when you lock on to the flag. |
|
Information at a glance If you prefer wearable technology, Garmin has both GPS watches and bands to suit all styles. The Approach S60 watch, seen here on the left, boasts colour hole maps, hazard information and offers front, middle and back yardages. The other, the Approach X40 band, is a slim, lightweight and waterproof wristband that gives you distances to the green and to hazards, as well as heart rate and activity tracking. |
