Stretton's News Here I’m back again after a few weeks without the newsletter, so this is a busy one. I hope you all had a great Christmas and all the very best for 2019. Seems strange saying that so far into January but Foremost have only fully gone back to work this week unlike us! Between Christmas and the New Year, we added a new puppy to the Wright household. Here is a quick video of Luna for you all to see chasing a piece of ice. Click here to watch video. |
She is lovely but I had forgotten how much hard work they are! She really is a mischievous little thing but hopefully by the time you are reading this, she will be allowed outside so it should hopefully become a little easier. |
Fantasy European Tour It is starting again and I shall run a league like last year for any that are interested. It’s just £5 to enter with three prizes at the end of the season. Please pay in the Pro Shop. Please follow the link below and you will need this code to enter the Hornsea Golf Club league. uJkDJtTK61 Click here to enter.

Boxing Day Bring and Win On Boxing Day, we held the traditional Bring and Win competition but I must say it was a little disappointing that only 15 people played. What great fun those 15 had though with all having great stories to tell after they had finished. All prizes this year were very good with no real bad ones. Much to my disappointment! It was Robert Rix that came out on top though wit 27pts beating Leigh Gawley and Pete Cane on the last six holes. Thanks to all that played and it would be great to see a few more playing next year.

Christmas and New Years Eve Am Am - Pictures and Results So, let’s start with the Christmas Am Am. It was a bit of a damp affair for the 25 teams that played, with steady drizzle falling for roughly 15 holes and after the previous nights heavy rain the course was playing really long. It was great despite these conditions to see so many getting into the Christmas spirit by dressing up. The prize for the best dressed team went to, Jim Jeffries, Jiggy Giles, Alan Hood and Paul Sharpe who played all 18 holes dressed as elves and even had their golf clubs in Santa sacks! |
When my team came in with 75 points, I knew that wouldn’t be good enough but I wasn’t expecting the scoring to be as good as it was with two teams managing 13 points better than us! Ladies 1st £17.50 each Nicky Salzl, Angie Hinch, Wendy Lockwood, Sally Bird 69pts 2nd £10 each Emma Hanson, Tracey Worsnop, Pam Mounfield, Ginette Evans 64pts
Gents 1st £60 each Matty Raybould, Leigh Gawley, Tom Broadley, Joe Palmer 88pts 2nd £50 each Jim Jeffries, Jiggy Giles, Alan Hood, Paul Sharpe 88pts 3rd £40 each Dave Blanchard Jnr, Dave Blanchard Snr, Steve Blanchard, Tom Greaves 87pts 4th £30 each Mike Brooke, Paul Hitchen, Ian Pearson, Barry Jacobs 85pts 5th £20 each Rees Brown, Chris Stephenson, Alan Beaumont, Graham Brewer 85pts 6th £15 each Paul Lockwood Jnr, Andrew Lockwood, Ian Lockwood, Sharon Cane 84pts

So, moving on to the New Year’s Eve Am Am. It was a bit like déjà vu with the first two places going to almost the same teams! It was a great day for golf though for the time of year and scoring was slightly better in this event. Only one lady team though so they received courtesy shots rather than play for their own prizes as per the agreement made last year. The prize fund also wasn’t as much due to less teams playing. 17 in this event. All money taken was paid back in prizes. 1st £55 each Nick Raybould, Leigh Gawley, Tom Broadley, Joe Palmer 93pts 2nd £45 each Jim Jeffries, Jiggy Giles, Alan Hood, Pete Cane 93pts 3rd £35 each Tom Walker, Lee Addinall, Ben Carter, Ross Meggison 87pts 4th £25 each Paul Duckworth, Martin Rowbotham, Charlie Duckworth, Lindsay Ward 83pts 5th £10 each Paul Gibson, Ash Dexter, Jon Raw, Dougie Griebenouw 83pts

Yorkshire Boys Captain The Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs today (04/01/19) announce the appointment of Jack Maxey (Hornsea) as their Boys Captain for 2019. In 2018, Maxey won the South of England Boys Championship and was tied 10th in the Scottish Boys Open Championship. He also has considerable match play experience and was a member of the Yorkshire Boys team that won The English Boys County Title at Rockliffe Hall. A strong team player with an unbeaten record, when leading Yorkshire in the singles games at Rockliffe, impressed both his team mates and County officials. He was also a member of the victorious East Riding Union Team, which secured the 2018 Men’s Yorkshire Inter District Union six-man team title, having won the Junior Yorkshire IDU six-man team event in 2017.

In 2018, Maxey successfully defended both the East Riding Union boys Matchplay and Stroke-play titles which he had won in 2017. A member of the 2019 England Golf Boys regional squad, Jack Maxey is a respected golfer with an impressive golf CV. We look forward to seeing Jack lead The Yorkshire Boys Team in 2019 and wish him every success. |

Captains Drive-in On New Years Day shortly after I had done my draw, we had the yearly change over of gents Captain followed by his drive-in. For those that don’t know why Dave Blanchard our new Captain was dressed as Ronald McDonald it is because his middle name is Ronald and he is not too keen on it hence his brother and friends dressing him in this way. What a great laugh it was too. Well done Dave and good luck in your Captains year. Thank you also to Jill Marshall, our 2019 Lady Captain and Harry Anderson our 2019 Junior Captain for attending and driving in. Unfortunately, our Seniors Captain, Gordon McGlynn wasn’t able to make the event. We wish them all an enjoyable and successful 2019. |
New Year's Draw Many thanks to all that entered my draw again this year. As always, all money paid in goes out in prizes and this year’s prize fund was £1647. It was fantastic to see so many people in the clubhouse again for the draw and the atmosphere was great too. I had help from the Lady Captain Jill Marshall who drew the tickets out and below is a list of all the winners. These have all been put into credit in the shop if you were not at the draw. Pictures From The Course Now over the years I have seen some people in strange positions trying to retrieve their golf balls. This though has to be the best ever and thanks to Mike Smith for capturing this moment of Chris Binks who can’t have set off with many balls as this was taken just in front of the 2nd tee! |
|
On Christmas Eve, Leigh Gawley took this great picture just before teeing off looking down the 18th. |

Greens Firstly, on a damp day between Christmas and New Year many photographs were sent to me showing where people had yet again blatantly ignored the ropes. One had even stopped and lifted their trolley over the raised ropes and carried on. Please if you see anyone doing this make sure you tell them. When next year people start moaning about bad lies or the bare conditions around the greens these are the people that have caused the problems. It is your course so please make sure you look after it. Can golfers using electric trollies please stop cleaning their trolley wheels on the fairways. The 16th fairway on Sunday must have had 20 or more marks like this on it.
|
I have to mention pitch marks yet again. This weekend and over the Christmas period they were really bad. Many members just can’t be looking or trying to repair any at all. Even if you don’t think you have made a mark please attempt to repair at least one per green. I’m not sure when Gareth is going to start but he is planning to solid tine the greens shortly, he might have even started by the time you receive this. He will do half of each green so the area where the flag is won’t be disturbed. When this half recovers the other side will be done.

Rules Changes 2019 So, the new rules are in play and I am getting daily questions regarding them. I have tried to understand them through reading the new rules book and looking at various videos on line. Trust me though as of yet like the rest of you, it will be a bit of a learning curve as most of us have learned the rules through playing in the past and been corrected by those that know. The new rule book though does have all the answers and is a little easier to understand than the last one. With this in mind, we have now got two rules events organised and I would suggest really trying to get to one or the other. The first is to be held on Tuesday 15th January in the clubhouse at 2.30pm and will be hosted by Ruth Goodwin (County Handicap Advisor for England Golf). The second event will be done by Cameron Thomson (Member of the Yorkshire Union Rules Committee) and will take place on Wednesday 13th February starting at 7pm and again will be held in the clubhouse here at Hornsea. Both events will be open to members from here and other local golf clubs.
