Welcome to this week's exciting edition to Hornsea Golf Club's weekly newsletter. Enjoy the read.

Stretton's News I’m starting this week talking about Flash! Not only did we use a lot last week in cleaning the shop but the new range from Callaway has just come in which includes the new Epic Flash range of woods. I have hit a few with the demo clubs we have and they really are quite impressive. Why not take a look next time you are in. As you read down there is another ‘flash’ moment too! Click here to watch. |
Would Knowing All This Improve Your Golf? So, how many of you watched Bryson DeChambeau at the weekend win his first European Tour event out in Dubai. I really do not understand how all this information he talks through with his caddy helps but it works for him! Click here to watch video.

Captains Challenge The sheet for available dates for the Captains Challenge is now up in the Gents locker room. Many of this years dates are on Saturday mornings for a change, so when putting your names down please take note of the date and the start time as these are on the booking system already. There are a few on Sundays though. More dates might come available if this sheet fills up. |
Captains Journal Hello everyone, I hope you are all having a fantastic start to 2019, I know that mine has been extremely hectic, as I write this I am sat praying the snow stays away! I really enjoyed the drive-in, and would like to thank Rees for his kind words and for dressing me up as Big Ron, it made the experience even more enjoyable. We hosted Burns Night Supper last Friday, and, although the numbers could have been higher it was a fantastic night, until someone decided to shoot me with a drunk dart because I can’t remember the taxi journey home and I can confirm it is extremely difficult to get out of a kilt whilst under the influence! I would like to give a special thanks to Yvonne, Stretton, Jill Marshall, Rob Mercer, Jan Elder and Emma and Jonny for their support on the night. As I said, the numbers could have been a lot higher, we need to support the club by attending the social events, there is a lot of hard work that goes into arranging these, remember it’s your club and all the events end up being a fantastic night and benefitting the club in general. We have now got a sheet up in the men’s changing room for the Captains Challenge, so get your name down if you fancy a challenge! Captains Prize You may have seen posters around advertising my prize that I’m currently selling tickets for, if you haven’t seen them, the prize is: - 3-night stay at Vale do Lobo Golf Resort, Algarve.
- Two-bedroom apartment for four people
- 3 x green fees per player (choose from 2 golf courses: Royal and Ocean)
- Buggies included
- 4 x Free Club Hire (TaylorMade Golf Clubs)
Winner will be drawn on the Captains weekend – Sunday 7th July 2019 – All this for just £10 PER TICKET ENTRY which all goes to raising money for the club. Thank you to those that have bought tickets already. My Captains away trip is currently full, thank you to everyone who has paid up, I know the timing wasn’t ideal over Christmas, but it will be worth it! For anyone who wishes to be added, if you get in touch with me, I will speak the company that has arranged to see if there can be anyone further added. That’s all for now, happy golfing! |
Hickory Golf I mentioned some time ago about trying to organise a Hickory Golf event at Hornsea. Well we now have a date set and it is Sunday 29th September. I shall give you more details when I have them but hopefully it should be a great day. Have a quick look at the link to see what it is all about. Click here to learn more. |
Club Matchplay Entries Hard to believe I know but the entries are available from tomorrow for the Club Knockouts. This is always a great way to meet other members and you never know you might get your name up in gold at the Club forever. I have attached the rules and an entry form below if you would like to fill it in at home. Please place all entries in an envelope with the correct money and either drop it off in the shop or put it in the competition box in the clubhouse. Click here for rules and entry form. |
Burns Night Last Friday night the Golf Club held a Burns Night celebration. As I write this on Tuesday morning, I’m still suffering and will never be drinking whisky again! From what I can remember, it was a great night. Big thanks to one of our Scottish members Rob Mercer for addressing the Haggis and I must mention our Gents Captain Dave Blanchard who looked very smart indeed in a full Scottish outfit. Sorry Dave but I found this one of you in the loo too. What do you think readers? Pants or no pants?! |
European Tour Fantasy Race to Dubai It was another average week for me and like a few others, probably not happy that Louis Oosthuizen dropped out on the morning of the event leaving me with only five players! Great to see though that the two scoring the most points this week are both fairly new to golf but must be taking a keen interest. Well done Gareth Maiden and Ash Clark with Gareth just beating Ash this week. In the overall standings though, it is the other way around with Ash slightly ahead of Gareth Click here to view results. |
Internet Options for Hornsea Golf Club Members Website All information relating to the Club is available to members and the public on the website, including fixture dates. Any information relating to members specifically is held within the members area of the site. On the home page to the right of the logo at the top is the Members Area. This has details such as minutes to Board meetings, policies and knockout draws (members telephone numbers are then protected from the public). If you require login details please email a request to Yvonne To book a tee time through the website, please select the Bookings area to the left of the logo on the home page. Select members book now and either click here to register if it’s the first time you are using this or book a tee time if you have used before.
Booking a Tee Time There is now an app available to add to your smart phone for booking a tee time. If you have a smart device please go to either your App store or Google Play depending on which device you are using and search for BRS Golf. Once downloaded select Hornsea as your home club and add your user name/number and password as before.
Club V1 This is a new app taking the place of the previous app which ceased earlier this month. If you have a smart device, please go to either your App store or Google Play depending on which device you are using, and search for ClubV1 members hub. This App will ask for a login in via your HowDidIDo login details, or you can set up a new user if you haven’t already used HowDidIDo. Again it will ask basic details such as your name, email and home club.
Once you have downloaded and registered this app, it will show Hornsea Golf Club Limited in a tile, which you select. This will take you to a dashboard with your name at the top. Various sections are available including course status, live competition results, details of any outstanding invoices, the balance on your bar card. To access other information there is a menu option top right (shows as 3 lines in a box), press this to find more such as the Club Diary and other members. Members contact details only become available as each member registers for the app. We are adding information daily at the moment so please bear with us, and please give us your feedback on each area. The only area that we are not using at the moment is the booking area, this is actually to book into competitions in advance and not book a tee time. This is something we will be discussing further as to whether we will use the function in the future.

New Rules I would hope by now all you golfers are now aware of the golf rules changes that took place on January 1st. For quite a while now, I have been backwards and forwards with the Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs and England Golf to confirm what our local rules will be that you will see eventually on the back of all our score cards when we have them re printed shortly. In the meantime, this is what they will be. Local Rules Out of Bounds (Rule 18.2) Beyond any boundary fences, hedges and walls. Beyond the line of white posts to the right of the 1st, 4th, 5th, and 18th holes and to the rear of the 4th and 18th greens. On the Tower car park. On the Practice Ground car park. On or over the Practice Putting Green.
Penalty Areas (Rule 17) Penalty Areas are defined by red stakes. All other Penalty Areas are defined by yellow stakes.
Protection of Young Trees The young trees identified by stakes or rabbit guards are no play zones: If a player’s ball lies anywhere on the course other than in a penalty area and it lies on or touches such a tree or such a tree interferes with the player’s stance or area of intended swing, the player must take relief under Rule 16.1f.
Immovable Obstructions Close to Putting Green Immovable obstructions close to putting green: In addition to the types of interference described in Rule 16.1a, when a ball lies in the general area, interference also exists if an immovable obstruction is: on the player’s line of play, is within two club-lengths of the putting green, and is within two club-lengths of the ball. The player may take relief under Rule 16.1b. (Exception – There is no relief under this Local Rule if the player chooses a line of play that is clearly unreasonable).
Paths The road which crosses the 18th hole and all paths on the course that are edged, are to treated as immovable obstructions from which free relief is allowed under Rule 16.1.
Practice (Rule 5.2) A player must not practise on the competition course before or between rounds of a stroke play competition. In match-play a player may practise on the course before a round or between rounds. The designated practise areas are defined by blue stakes where practise is permitted.
Penalty for Breach of Any Local Rule – General Penalty: Match Play – Loss of Hole Stroke Play – Two Strokes
Can you all also make sure you look either outside the shop and in the ladies and gents locker rooms for any ‘temporary local rules’ that might be in place. We have a few at the moment.
|
Course Closure ETC Can all members please refrain from blaming the staff in the Professional Shop when the course is closed or is maybe on temporary greens on the odd rare occasion. Gareth as the Course Director makes these decisions for the good of the course and we just pass the information on. Of course, we are just like you and want it fully open at all times and on full greens but occasionally this is not possible. Last Friday we had a lot of people who disagreed with Gareth’s decision. This was his reason for not going onto full greens.

Greens It has been another hard week for the lads on the course with the weather again making things difficult. It does mean they can get on with servicing of the machinery though, so it will be ready for the season. After all the heavy rain on Sunday night, the greens have had some aeration too to help them breathe. 12mm tines set at 225mm depth. The 15th path when I wrote this was nearing completion and looking really good.

Picture From Warmer Climes!
Now I’ve left this picture to the end just in case any of you are eating your tea whilst reading this! Steve Robinson sent me this picture of himself at Copacabana Beach in Rio. It's 34° there apparently!

The best keeps getting better |
Titleist is a brand which is synonymous with excellence, with the iconic Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls proving a huge success for almost two decades now. So, rather than wholesale changes to an already brilliant offering, the brand has made some subtle - yet significant - improvements for 2019, including a high optic yellow colour option! |
| Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x (2019) |
|
Golfers are greedy. We want to hit the ball further than ever but without giving up on anything else, such as feel or control. Well, the 2019 Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls will give you more ball speed and less long-game spin off the clubface compared to previous versions, which is the perfect equation for increased distance. |
Couple this with amazing short game performance, and you have two golf balls that'll provide you with everything you need on the golf course. Not sure which one to go for? Come and chat to us in-store and we'll fit you for the Titleist golf ball which best suits your game. |
