Captains Challenge Disappointment So, our unbeaten record hasn’t lasted long as Shaun and Steve Prout beat us on Saturday morning in conditions that definitely suited them better than us. The ground was hard, and a slight covering of frozen snow made for an interesting few bounces and putting a little tricky to start with. Both Shaun and Steve made the most of these conditions, and quickly took an early lead. They held on to this lead and at the turn left us two down. Shaun had actually made 21pts in the competition going out, so we were doing well to be only two down. The greens cleared as we started the back nine, and Dave and myself started playing better. Well Dave did, and we started to get back into the game.

Stood on the 16th tee though, we were still two down but Shaun was in trouble off the tee in the right-hand bunker and Steve hit two balls so far right they would have nearly been in Mappleton! Dave and I had both hit great tee shots long and both on the fairway. With Steve out of the hole, Shaun had to try and make his shot count so just played out of the bunker down towards the mounds. A terrible third shot from him though which finished across near the 17th competition tee, and I thought we had them as both Dave and myself were looking at making birdies. Shaun though somehow found a shot to the green Phil Mickelson would have been proud of and he made his five nett four, and managed to get a half. On to the 17th, we went and with a three putt from Shaun and Steve doing similar we went to the 18th one down. With them both on shots, we somehow needed to make a birdie. We couldn’t manage to do this though, so in the end we finished one down. A great game though with plenty of laughs and banter all the way round. They both made a very generous donation to the Captains Charity too. Here is a picture of them in the car park after they had beaten us. Great photo bomb by Mark Snape too! As mentioned before the sheet for the matches with available dates is in the gents locker room. Dave has added another interest this year with ‘Animal Tags’ We shall explain these on the 1st tee of our matches but have a word with Steve as he nearly had them all at one point in our match! |
Club Matchplay Entries Entry forms are now available for the Club Knockouts. This is always a great way to meet other members and you never know you might get your name up in gold at the Club forever. I have attached the rules and an entry form below if you would like to fill it in at home. Please place all entries in an envelope with the correct money and either drop it off in the shop or put it in the competition box in the clubhouse. Click here for rules and entry form. |
European Tour Fantasy Race to Dubai David Prescott was the clear winner last week with some inspired picks and has moved him up into the top ten in the overall positions. Ash Clark remains on top of the league despite a poor week. I had a disaster again with only three of my players making the cut. I had Sergio too, so that didn’t help when he got himself disqualified. Much harder to pick a team this week though with not many of the top golfers playing. Click here to view results. |
Clubhouse and Catering News It was nice to read a great review from a member of the public that came for Sunday lunch last week. Here is a picture of what she had to say. If you haven’t tried it yet why not give it a try. Make sure you book though to avoid disappointment if they are full. I mentioned last week that after a settling in period and listening to what people have suggested for the daily menu, it will be ready to go from this weekend. Very nice it looks too. |
Hull & District Alliance Last Thursday the Gents Hull and District Alliance was held at a frozen solid Hainsworth Park. Now I have played in all sorts of conditions before but never have I played a competition on such hard ground. It really was like playing on concrete for all 18 holes. The temperature when I arrived at Hainsworth at 7.45am was -6, and trust me it was no warmer when we teed off at 8.15am. Getting a tee in the ground was virtually impossible and oh some strange bounces made for tough conditions. Well that’s what I thought anyway. . Myself and my partner finished on level par 71, which at the time I thought was a great effort. Hard to believe in the end that score was 11 behind the winning pair form Cottingham who somehow managed to get it round in 60! Our best score on the day came from Dave Whitton and Lindsay Ward with a 65. Hessle still lead overall but Cottingham are now only slightly behind after picking up 6 shots on them. Hornsea are now in 5th position. The next event is at Beverley on 21st February. I’d have been lost without these in my bag. Always be prepared.

New Rules Don’t forget if you couldn’t make the last new rules event we have another next Wednesday evening. I’m sure many of you would learn a lot, so it is well worth attending.

Greens Again, lots of jobs that are in need of doing on the course have had to be put on hold due to weather conditions as I write this on Tuesday. Hopefully, looking at the forecast the cold snap should have ended by the time you are reading this, and the greens that are still to be done should have been aerated. Fairways all need defining with a cut round the edge, bunkers need edging and fly mowing to tidy them up and the tees and green surrounds all also need a trim. This work is all weather dependant though. In the meantime, lots of servicing to equipment in the sheds has been done ready for the season with this last week’s job a big overhaul of the fairway mower. With the work to the 15th path now complete, the next job around the course will be to sort a problem with the back tee on the 16th as the sprinkler head on there is not working and a little bit of maintenance is needed on that tee. The path near the 16th yellow tee and towards the lady’s tee is also going to be edged on one side to tidy it up. |
Pictures from Warmer Places So instead of pictures from the course, I’m going to change it too ‘Pictures from Warmer Places’ for the next few weeks. Well that is as long as I keep getting pictures sent which trust me, I do enjoy seeing despite freezing at work of you all away enjoying some warmer weather! T his week I have a picture of Peter Mounfield teeing off on the famous par-3 at Vale do Lobo in the Algarve. Thanks, Pam, for sending me this picture and to answer your question yes, I’m very jealous! It’s a lot of years since I hit a ball down there! Did he make it over though and what score did he make? |

Pictures from a Cold Course Ok, so for those that are away, this was what it was like here on Tuesday morning at Hornsea. Thanks to Sue Howell and Emma Hanson for the pictures. |

New shoes? Walk this way... |
Golf is first and foremost a walking sport, with many of us strolling more than five miles in a pair of shoes every single round. You might read that fact and instantly recall getting off the 18th green wanting nothing more than a sit-down, feet aching, after realising your shoes aren’t as comfortable as they ought to be. Well, if that is the case, it might well be time for a change... |
Just arrived - Puma IGNITE NXT Being a sports brand for many years now, Puma's golf shoes offer the very best in both comfort and performance. Its IGNITE midsole foam provides energy return, cushioning and amazing step-in comfort - making walking those 18 holes an absolute joy. Couple this with the brilliant spikeless outsole for increased traction and power, and you have a stylish shoe that can be worn both on and off the course. |
