Welcome to another exciting edition to Hornsea Golf Club's weekly newsletter. Well, this week we can officially say that the golfing season has got underway with-it being Masters week. It looks like it's going to be another fantastic scene at Augusta National, and we hope that you enjoy it as much as us.
Enjoy the read.

Stretton's News I hope you have all had a good week despite the cold wind which is making golfing a tough test for all. I want you all to look at the video below which is what we received from England Golf after the survey which most of you filled in. It shows that the club has a few areas to address but on the whole the majority of members are very happy with the course and everything else at the club. The main points will be discussed and addressed by the board of directors. For those that offered your services as volunteers, I shall be organising a meeting in the clubhouse one evening to see how you can all help make Hornsea Golf Club even better. I shall be sending an email to those volunteers. If anyone else would like to volunteer please send me an email. Click here to watch video. |
Masters Time... As this email is delivered, a number of lucky Professionals will be walking down the fairways of Augusta National. Now, I really am not a great watcher of golf but there is just something magical about this event as I am sure you will all agree. Paul has been talking for a while now about taking a trip out to watch, so if this is something you might fancy please have a word with him. Just to give you all a little something to do can you name all of these past winners of the event. I shall post the answers at the end of this newsletter. |
Talking of The Masters; did any of you watch the kids in the Drive, Chip and Putt challenge on Monday night. Amazing how talented some of the kids are but this one stood out for me as possibly the most flexible golfer I have ever seen as he swings it longer than John Daley! Well worth a look but I don’t suggest any of you try it! Click here to watch video. |
New Buggies at Hornsea Last week we had a new fleet of buggies delivered and very smart they look at the moment too. I shall be having a system fitted to them to restrict them going too close to greens, tees and more importantly the ponds! I shall also be able to track where they are on the course and how they are being used. This should be fitted tomorrow to all the buggies.

Covered Area Going Up It has taken a while to sort but at last, the range building is going up and is looking good and might even be finished by the time you receive this. The plan in time is to have a ball dispenser too, rather than the tubes which are currently available from the shop. |
Tuesday Boys Morning Stretton & Yvonne,
Thanks for the help you gave us with our competition yesterday. We were lucky with the weather but could have done without the cold wind. Our bacon rolls and meals provided by Emma, Jonny and Mother were excellent. The Trophy was won by our oldest member Arthur Storey (96) and Stephen Green with 43 in this B/B/ Comp. (Arthur on the card nine times). This was the 14th year that we have played for this Trophy. We play next week for the Dave Allon Cup at Kirkbymoorside G.C.
Regards, Dak.

Nice Write Up from a Visiting Party Last week we had a visiting party from York come to play at Hornsea. It is a while since they last came to us but from the report written on their own website it sounds like they enjoyed it. I have taken this from http://www.hgsgolf.org.uk if you wanted to have a look. |
Max Turns 60 and Returns His First HGS Win Many people have wondered over the years why Max Hopkins has not won an HGS event. We have now discovered the reason - he just wasn't old enough. But now Max has reached the grand age of 60 his golf has matured enough to win the coveted HGS Singles Trophy for the first time. His impressive 36 points on a tricky course at Hornsea was sufficient to overcome the challenges from Ben Wilson (34 points) and Richard Bramall (32 points) at our first golf day of 2019. No doubt there will be many more wins for Max... This was our first return to Hornsea since 2003, and it was well worth the drive from the York and Leeds areas. Tight drives, close out-of-bounds, bunkers galore, in-play water and quality greens - it had it all. We'll be back - perhaps within a further 16 years. Nearest the pin was won by Alistair Babbington (par-3) and by Brian Williams (par-5).

Wiles Cup Final at Hornsea It is tradition that the Wiles Cup final is always played at Hull Golf Club but this year with a pair from Hull making the final it was played here at Hornsea last Sunday. There was nothing in it after nine holes with the game standing at all square. It was the pair from Hessle though that played the back-nine very well and managed to win in the end 3&2. |
Hull and District Ladies Past Captains Meeting On Monday, Christine Gregory organised a get together of all the past Lady Captains from the Hull & District area. What a great turn out it was too. Here are some pictures of the prize winners with Christine. |
European Tour Fantasy Race to Dubai No event last week but I am sure The Masters this week will bring a few changes. |
Hornesa Members At Celtic Manor This week a trip of Hornsea members organised by Jon Bickerdike have been at Celtic Manor for a few days. Looking at the pictures they have had a great time too. I did love this video of Steve Carmichael trying to play a shot from the edge of a lake on the 14th hole at the 2010 course. Watch the ball carefully! Click here to watch video. |

Hornsea Seniors Host a Great Day Update on yesterday. Everything went well and it was a greatly supported with some 128 players. Some from nearby Hainsworth and some from as far as Knaresborough. There were some great comments about the course which is a credit to the greenkeepers. I witnessed this morning at 07:15am the 'Iron' whizzing about the 18th green. Special thanks go to the Hornsea members who supported the day, around 20 of them. Thanks go to my support team of Peter Bridges and Dave Miller my Vice-Captain who controlled booking in and collating scores at the end. A special mention goes to our Lady President and Patsy Yates for manning the Halfway House. Finally, a big thank you to Malcolm Hester for his now legendary IT supports. Bit of Colour At The First Tee Lindsay Ward was busy helping at the club again on Monday morning planting some heathers near the first tee. Well done again Lindsay for all your efforts and continuing hard work at the club. |
Greens News The cold wind and a lack of rain is really not helping at the moment as it is really only the poorer grasses that are growing. We are now cutting on a regular basis though to keep the course looking tidy. If we get a still morning with no wind, I know Gareth wants to spray the greens too to help green them up. For those that think the path on the side of the 16th tee is finished it is not as we are waiting on a delivery of red shale to finish this. That is why the hoops are there still so people don’t walk on it until it is completed. |
Pictures From The Course So I have a great one this week and I still can’t believe how it got there! On Saturday morning, Wendy Lockwood somehow managed to get her ball inside the halfway house! It was with her tee shot off the 7th tee if you are wondering!
|
|
I was also sent a picture of Rees Brown in a not the best of positions on Saturday. I wonder how he ended up there! |
|
Last one is a great picture taken by our Captain last Thursday morning. I think that was the last time we saw any sunshine as I write this on Tuesday morning! |
