Greetings from Stretton Wright
Hornsea Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

I know quite a lot of you will have already seen it but my New Year's Day draw sheet is now up and running. 50p per ticket. All money taken will be put back as prizes. Last year there was £1608 worth of prizes and the 1st prize was worth £429, and I gave 20 other prizes. The draw takes place at roughly 1pm on New Year's Day followed by the Captains hand over and drive in. Everyone is welcome. Don't forget to get your tickets next time you are in.

Quite funny each year when I bring out the sign to think David Close made it the first year I was here. 15 years ago!

The entry sheets are filling up for the Xmas and New Year's Eve Am Am's. They are opposite the shop if you haven't got your names down yet. Only 5 tees left in both events.

Please all note the presentation evening is not on Friday 28th November as it say's in the diary. It will now take place on Sunday 14th December starting at 4pm.

I now have the cabinet for the new coffee machine so that should hopefully be with us shortly. Many thanks go to Gareth Atkin and www.landauparapan.com for supplying the cabinet which looks great.

Very disappointing entry again this week. Only 9. Please support club competitions.

Now what a bad idea it was to play the morning after the Captains Dinner Dance!! Even if we didn't tee off until 10 o'clock. Our opponents where Brian Hawksworth and Peter Rotherham who both looked considerably better than myself and Keith stood on the 1st tee!

What a great game we had though. Pete made a great par nett birdie up the 1st but we hit back straight away with Keith making a birdie on the 2nd. By the halfway house we had got to 3 up and things where looking good. I'm not sure quite what happened on the next 3 though as we lost them all even after I had driven the 11th too!

All square then stood on the 13th tee and both myself and Keith were flagging!! Somehow though we managed to win the 14th and 15th to eventually win 3 & 1 with 6 bits. Both Brian and Peter made a very generous donation to the Captains charity. Thank you for a very enjoyable morning.

HULL & DISTRICT GOLFING ASSOCIATION

Next event is at Withernsea 22nd January. Hornsea lead the Victor Hurdle Cup by 2 shots after the first part of the season. There is now a new website to keep everyone up to date with what's going on. www.hullanddistrictgolf.co.uk

EAST RIDING GOLF ALLIANCE

After 4 events Hornsea are tied 7th in the Hull Daily Mail Championship Bowl. We are 21 shots behind which even though it sounds a lot it can be clawed back. It is a tough format with only 2 pairs playing and both scores count. We only need a good day and the teams in front a bad one and we will be right back in it.

All results and information can be found by looking at www.eryga.co.uk

It was only last week that I mentioned about the ropes and hoops. I was very disappointed when I played on Sunday morning to see where one golfer had taken his trolley on Sunday morning. You can clearly see in the dew that not only had the trolley been taken over the ropes but also then went straight between two hoops. Please look after your course and if you see anybody doing this sort of thing please tell them.

Work still continues daily on collecting leaves from all over the course. It really does seem like a never ending task at the moment. The willow tree that had come down near the first tee has been cut right back so those of you that draw the ball will no longer be struggling from the winter yellow tee!!

A few poplar trees have also been taken out from the right hand side of the 2nd.

Some of the fairways are looking a bit of a mess. They will soon recover. The reason for this is that they are been slit using the attachment on the back of the tractor that the seniors section bought a few years ago. This helps to aerate the grass and also help with drainage. In turn it all goes towards creating a better sward of grass coverage. This will be done a number of times through the winter.

By the time this newsletter comes out I would think that all the Leylandii trees around the 4th tee will have been removed. In time gorse will be put in their place.

Weather permitting, work should start on the re bunkering of the 7th and 8th next week. Some work will also be done on levelling and re shaping the 8th tee. Please note these holes will be played slightly differently whilst the work is been done.

AGM and Prize Presentation

Tuesday 18th November saw the ladies section hold there AGM and Prize Presentation. The ladies have had a very successful year this year with many of them winning prizes. Christine Gregory handed over the office of Lady Captain to Wendy Lockwood. Good luck Wendy in your coming year.

Lady Captains Drive In

Tuesday 25th November will see our new Lady Captain Wendy Lockwood drive in. If you are able to attend please come down and support/put her off!! It starts at 9am.

We don't have too many visiting parties playing at this time of year but on Sunday 16th we had a group from Matlock. I spoke to them after they had finished and they were extremely complimentary about the course and how they had been looked after. For the time of year they could not believe how good the greens are and the overall condition of the course was considering the time of year. Always nice to receive great feedback. During the year we have been giving out feedback forms to which nearly all the reviews are excellent. When I have time I will be going through them all and trying to find any areas that could possibly be improved.

Saturday 15th November was the Captains Finale Dinner Dance at the Golf Club. Over 100 people had a fantastic night. The food was great and the entertainment that the Inflatables put on was 1st class.

I have put a couple of videos on here that are well worth a watch.

Well done to all involved in making it such a great night.

One of the tables on the night was a surprise 50th for Ian Sizer. I nearly let the surprise out when he first arrived at the club but in the end a great night was had.

The main part of this weeks blog will give you some help on how to prepare for winter golf by dressing correctly and wearing the right gear. The weather has been pretty variable so I hope you managed to make it out on to the course at some point but whilst you're kicking back and relaxing in the warmth, click here to read my blog.
