Hello all! It has been several months since the last greens report due to global pandemic and there is plenty to inform you of. For a period of time, the club furloughed two members of the staff which under normal circumstances would have left us very short-handed. Thankfully we returned to a full complement of staff on Tuesday, 12 May to prepare the course for reopening on Monday, 18 May. Unfortunately, Paul Lazenby resigned his position and left the greens staff on Friday, 3 July, we wish him well for his future endeavours. Following a very wet winter, we took a slightly different approach to greens maintenance (March). First, we top-dressed the greens and then solid tined with large 20mm tines (depth of 175mm) and brushed. To reduce thatch levels, we then hollow cored the greens, removed the plugs and dressed again. Recovery was slow as we only had 15mm of rainfall in a 9 week period. However, as I jump forward to this week they are healthy and are performing well under changing weather patterns. We increased the micro tining through the dry period to aid irrigation water and air percolation through the root zone and will continue to do so if necessary. More recently, we had a power board failure with our irrigation control panel which is becoming increasingly more difficult to source parts for this ageing system. At present, we are able to manually operate the heads and use hosepipes for the hotpots but not set a drenching program through the night. Mowing the course is in full swing with greens being mown on a daily basis. Tees, surrounds, fairways and semi-rough are mown twice a week and the main rough taking three days to complete. We have a two to three- week rotation with the bunkers flymo’d and edged, ditch/ pond banks and copses cut and strimmed. All of which keeps us very busy. Bunkers are raked every Friday. The hedges around the clubhouse and some out on the course have been trimmed. The gent's eighth yellow tee bed has been hollow cored, overseeded and top dressed to improve grass cover. With good soil temperatures and increasing levels of rainfall which should give us the best chance for germination. Gareth Williams - Course Director

| Last Years winners
| Saturday, 18 July is Club Championship day. The Jack Major Trophy will be played for over 36 holes for those with handicaps up to 10, the Norman Seaton Trophy also over 36 holes for handicaps of 11 to 16, the John Wood Chalices over 18 holes for those with a handicap of 17 or more. The closing date for entering the competition is Thursday, 9 July. So today as you are reading this, if you haven't already entered and wish to, please either message Yvonne or Nathan or send an email to the office. We will be arranging the tee times on Friday and adding to the BRS. If there are any spare times they will be released ready for the usual Saturday booking. Please remember we are still on reduced times, so spare times will be more limited than usual. Times are usually available mid to late afternoon after the second round players have gone out. At the moment we have 34 entries to the Jack Major, 25 entries to the Norman Seaton and 17entries to the John Wood. Normally we would have a small presentation following the last card entry, however, due to the restrictions in place, we will not be able to process the cards until Sunday and will announce the winners then. Sorry not quite the same buzz, as usual, however, we are just grateful that we are able to play the event and it is so well supported. |

Saturday Division One Medal, Toogood Tankard & Jimmy Glew Trophy & Ladies Saturday Medal
The division one medal is in place of the usual Scratch Cup qualifier, as we are not holding any knockouts this year. The Scratch Cup will not be played for and therefore a medal has been arranged in its place, the second and third division trophies, however, are not knockout qualifiers, therefore, they are being played for. Sunday Tomlinson Family Cup An email has been sent to possible entrants but just in case we missed any, details as below: Traditionally this event has low entry and we think after going through our membership list that there are actually quite a few family relationships that qualify and maybe aren't aware. Family units are made up of siblings, in-laws, aunts/uncles, cousins, children and grandchildren. No husband and wife teams though. This is quite a unique competition and we hold onto it every year, it was a particular mission of Stret's to get as many entered as possible. If you have already booked a time for this Sunday to play in this annual event - perfect. If not please see if you are free. The format of the competition is a better ball medal and is played from gents white and ladies tees, with a handicap allowance of 9/10. If you are a family unit and wish to play you can, you only need another member to mark your card so don't worry if you don't know another pairing.
