Hello Golfers,

Welcome to our new Captain & Lady Captain
Jan & Tom Elder

As you will all know, extremely poor weather conditions at various times last year led to course closures and this, coupled with the Covid-19 Pandemic, made 2020 a very difficult year for everyone. Although we’re seeing poor weather again at the start of January and the Pandemic is still with us, there does appear to be light at the end of the tunnel and I would like to wish everyone involved with Hornsea Golf Club all the best for 2021.

My wife Jan and I have been members of Hornsea Golf Club since 2011 and we both take a keen interest in supporting the club and its events. We are therefore jointly proud and honoured to be your Hornsea Golf Club Captains for 2021. I should add at this point that we are not the first husband and wife to be joint Captains at Hornsea (it last occurred in 1957 when H.S. Biggs and his wife took on the Captaincy roles) but you could say that Jan and I are the first husband and wife joint Captains at Hornsea this century!

In taking on the Captaincy role, I would first like to mention and thank the Hornsea Golf Club Board, Business Manager Yvonne Wright & The Pro Shop staff, Head PGA Professional Rich Pace, the 2020 Captains Ross Meggison and Sally Bird plus other past Captains for their support and advice in what the Captaincy role entails. I would also like to mention Gareth Williams and his greenkeeping staff for maintaining the course throughout the year in such good condition, despite what the British weather throws our way!

Due to the ongoing Pandemic, the club were unable to conduct the Captains’ Drive-in on New Year’s Day. It is still planned to hold the event at some point later in the year, when Covid-19 restrictions allow, to coincide with the re-opening of the recently refurbished clubhouse.

For 2021, both Jan and I are pleased to announce our joint charity, which will be to support the setting up of SWING INTO GOLF (Stretton Wright Inspiring Next Generation Into Golf). We are especially thrilled about this as we wanted to support a charity for local children and we also wanted to do something in commemoration of Stret. Amazingly, when we first approached Yvonne, she told us of the family’s idea to set up SWING INTO GOLF which Jan and I have been privileged to have been made part of from the outset.

In respect of the Captain’s Challenge, we have contacted various clubs in the Yorkshire Region who have agreed to assist us in our charity fundraising efforts. Therefore, the Captains’ Challenge will be a little different this year as both Jan and I will be involved. Rich Pace has agreed to play 20 Challenges, 10 with me and 10 with Jan, each of us playing 5 home games and 5 away. Look out for details which will be published shortly, including the list of clubs and dates, and sign up if you wish to take on the Challenge!

Some early Captain’s dates for your diaries:

Captain’s Weekend: 10th and 11th July 2021 (Hornsea GC)

Captain’s Exchange Away Trip: 29th & 30th July 2021 (Wetherby GC and Pike Hills GC). This trip had originally been planned and agreed for 2020. Although the Covid-19 Pandemic meant the trip couldn’t take place in 2020 both the Captains at Wetherby GC and Pike Hills were very keen to carry the trip forward to 2021. The trip will be strictly limited to 32 persons (i.e., 16 pairs) and further details on the trip and how to sign up will be released in the coming months.

In respect of social events, we have been liaising with Emma and Jonny Hanson over clubhouse preparations but unfortunately some events have already had to be cancelled due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation. Nonetheless, we are all staying positive in the hope that some social events will take place later in the year.

Finally, thanks to you, the members, for playing at and supporting Hornsea Golf Club. I look forward to your support throughout the year and will endeavour to keep you regularly informed through the club newsletter of any interesting events or matters arising. In representing you as Captain, please feel free to contact me with any suggestions or ideas that you wish to put forward.

Puma waterproofs - available through us

Well, we will all be trying to get out of the house for some good walks over the next few weeks, but they're a lot less enjoyable if you’re caught out in the rain. That’s why it is so important to have a waterproof jacket that really gets the job done.

Puma’s UltraDry jacket does exactly that, and with a flourish; giving you complete waterproof protection, a stylish look and freedom of movement in your swing. Now that’s happiness, Mr Norman.

Video of the Week

Every good round of golf requires a bit of luck, be it a favourable bounce around the greens or a preferable lie off the fairway. Sometimes it is far more extreme, as this highlight reel from the European Tour showcases. Enjoy.
