Hello Golfers,

Club news

Expectation Management
Hornsea's 12th Hole

It is a fact that most Amateur golfers believe they are better than they actually are.  I am not writing this to disrespect any of the region’s golfers, merely to set the scene

I could reduce a golfer’s handicap with no technical instruction involved at all - which is a bold statement I know

How, I hear you ask

Statistics from the current 2020 PGA Tour season show that from the Fairway with 150-175 yards to the green, Michael Gellerman hit the ball closer than anybody else on Tour, with his shots finishing an average 22 feet 11 inches from the hole…...who is Michael Gellerman I hear you ask

It is easy to forget that when you sit down on a weekend and watch the golf from exotic locations around the globe, that you will be watching the leaders of that week’s tournament, who undoubtedly will be hitting the closest to the flag that given week

The average for the whole tour……… 27’9”………which is a little over 9 yards!

To put this into perspective, the width of our 12th green is approximately 11 yards

So where does that leave us mere mortals?

You first need to understand your shot pattern (at this point I will put a blanket statement over all golfers) and importantly what your AVERAGE is

In general, club golfers ‘slice’ the golf ball and assume they are a right handed golfer for now.  They will have a 30 yard ‘miss’ from 10 yards left (pull) to 20 yards right (slice) when hitting a 6 iron, with an average miss of 5 yards right of target

It would be easy to assume that this golfer should merely aim 5 yards left of the flag…….however that is not the case

In the last round of the Masters in November, run away winner Dustin Johnson hit 13 greens in regulation.  Including the five that he missed, his ball finished on the ‘Fat’ side of the green on 13 occasions.

So if the flag is on the right side of the green, your target should be left of the flag.  In addition to the ‘average’ miss that you tend to produce, your actual target may well be the left half of the green.

The majority of golfers SHOULD NEVER aim at the flag, but aim towards the widest part of the green….if its good enough for the world #1, it’s good enough for you

It will seem very counterintuitive at first, but once you see how ‘stress free’ golf can be, you will understand and trust the process more

If you are wanting to look a bit more in depth at course strategy, and wanting to pass a bit of time during Lockdown, take a look at ProVisualizer.  A Course strategy/management tool which I use in my coaching, and used by the caddie of the 2020 USPGA winner, Collin Morikawa.
