Greetings from Stretton Wright
Hornsea Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Not sure if any of you have seen it yet but we have a new TV screen in the main bar. This will be used when we have an Open Competition to display the scores. We will also be using it to show information that is happening at the club and also have sponsors advertising on it. It will not be used as a TV. If you are interested in a sponsor's page it is £50 plus VAT per year. Can I just give a big thanks to Malcom Hester and his team of Seniors who gave the money from funds they raised last year for the screen.

Spring can't be far away, even if we are under snow when I'm writing this,  as we shall be putting the entry forms out on Friday 13th February for all the Club's Match play Competitions. I just wanted to let you all know so you can sort yourselves out with a partner for the better balls. The poster is also up for the East Riding Match play. If any of you want to enter please bring your £10 into the Pro Shop as we have the entry sheet.

A date for all your diaries. The Callaway demo day will be on Tuesday 21st April 10am till 2pm. More details to follow but if you would like a fitting on the day please have a word in the shop as soon as possible. Click here to see a selection of Callaway items we stock.

The Hornsea Golf Club Pro Am this year will be taking place on Friday 19th June. We are taking bookings now for teams. You can bring your own Professional or the Yorkshire PGA will find one for you. If anyone is interested in sponsoring a hole please have a word in the shop.

GREENS NEWS - DECEMBER 2014 / JANUARY 2015

As you will have seen, the winter programme is well under way and we have tried to keep the disturbance to a minimum. However some disruption is inevitable but we appreciate your patience during this time.

The greens have progressed well through the winter. Minimal scarring from fusarium last year will recover but at this time of year it will be slow. The putting surfaces are due for a mix of iron, seaweed and potassium to harden up the plant against disease and will be applied as soon as possible.

Aeration will continue around the course to relieve compaction. The greens have been slit tined to a depth of 180mm. This allows air and water to move further down the soil profile keeping the surfaces drier and firmer. Depending on our works schedule it is my intention to hollow core some, if not all the fairways. There is a significant percentage of thatch that holds the rain water at the surface and reduces penetration rates. This in turn creates wet muddy fairways with possible course closures. The ideal would be to top dress the 8 hectares of fairway post aeration but this is very cost prohibitive. Fineturf, the contractors, began works on 1st December and where on site for 8 days. This was approximately 3 weeks later than scheduled caused by the bad weather. The greenkeeping team first task was to strip and save as much turf as possible so that it could be reused, thus reducing costs. Sixty tonnes of topsoil was used once the bunkers had been reshaped. Turf from our nursery is then used on the banks and to line the bunker base.

The men's 8th tee was stripped of turf and the top soil removed and set aside. The subsoil base was regarded into the three defined tees and the tee tops levelled. The winter tee area was lowered and the white tee raised approximately 450mm. Topsoil was then replaced with an additional 30 tonnes of rootzone. The existing tee turf was then replaced.

New boards define the path to and from the 8th tee and the soon to be completed 10th path. This work has totally revitalised the area and should last for years. Red shale will be added in the spring.

The removal of the Leylandii from the rear of the 7th green is part of the established (tree) plan. To reiterate, Leylandii do create a screen starving vital playing areas (greens, tees, fairways) of light and air movement. The work on the large Leylandii copse on the 12th is ongoing.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome our new member to the greens team, Paul Lazenby. Paul has worked at Hainsworth Park for over a year as an apprentice.
