Greetings from Stretton Wright
Hornsea Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Firstly, can I just apologise to anyone that has been into the shop this last week whilst we have been sorting the lights and ceiling. We had to totally empty the shop at the end of last week and we are now in the process of putting it all back together. What a lot of mess comes down when you take down a ceiling. A lot of hard work for us but I'm sure you will all agree it looks a lot better.

With having to empty the shop, it has given us chance to give it a good clean and you will also notice quite a lot of new stock is now in. Please pop in next time you are playing to have a look and don't miss out on anything you might like as I don't think it will be in for long.

On Saturday morning I popped up to the practice ground to see how Paul was getting on with the junior lesson. Even though it was cold, there was a great turn out and they are all getting on really well. It won't be long until you will be seeing the next lot of youngsters starting off on the blue tees on a Saturday afternoon. If any of you can spare a bit of time on a Saturday afternoon to help them round 6/9 holes it would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if you can.

For all you past footballers, it would be nice if some of you could support the Hornsea Football Club Am Am which is to be played at Hornsea Golf Club on April 10th. Please click here to see the attached poster.

For all golfers off 10 handicap or less, please note the closing date for the East Riding Matchplay is Wednesday 1st April. The entry form is in the shop if you want to enter. Entry fee of £10 must be paid with your entry.

MAIL ON SUNDAY

It was our gent's team that were performing this week. They were away at Withernsea with a strong team of Sam Middleton, Jonny Fisher, Leigh Gawley, Andy Fox and Paul Harland. It was an early start for them all at 8 o'clock but this didn't put our boy's off with them coming away with a 4-1 win. Well done boys and good look in the next round.

HULL & DISTRICT GOLFING ASSOCIATION

As this newsletter is sent out on Thursday afternoon myself and the Hornsea team should hopefully be celebrating winning the Victor Hurdle Cup. I shall put a full report up next week with some pictures.

EAST RIDING GOLF ALLIANCE

Last Wednesday saw our boys go to Bridlington Golf Club. They all performed fairly well but with scores of 70, 72 and 75 it didn't unfortunately see us make up any ground on Scarborough North Cliff who in the end became easy winners of the Hull Daily Mail Trophy. Hornsea though did come 2nd tied with Hessle. A great performance from all that have played and supported the East Riding Alliance this year.

As well as the daily setting up of the course and other jobs of tidying around beds etc the main concentration this week has been on the greens maintenance. It has been hard work brushing the sand in though with the weather been a little damp so the process has been a little slower than Gareth would have liked. Please read this report as it will give you a little more idea of what goes on during this process and why it is done.

Spring Greens Maintenance

As notified in the Club Calendar, the second half of March signifies a week of Spring pre-season maintenance. Hornsea members will understand how fortunate they are to play on our course without temporary greens or tee mats throughout the Winter. This continuous high standard of playability is an indication of how successful the maintenance programme really is.

What will be happening, and WHY?

All greens will be deep verti-drained with 12mm tines to a depth of 300mm. This is to reduce compaction of the 'pan', aiding drainage. Tining also creates space for root development and helps the natural gas exchange of CO2 to Oxygen. The tines will be replenished with straight sand to keep the surface firm and well-drained.

Following the verti-draining and dressing, the 'Wiederman' machine will be used to over-tine with 8mm to a depth of 75mm and then complete a light overdressing with sand and grit. This helps to partially close the larger tine holes, aiding swift recovery, and further drains and aerates the upper root systems. This in turn keeps the moisture away from the surface, reducing the likelihood of disease.

The greens will then be fertilised using a 4-0-10 mixture (Nitrogen/Potassium/ Iron) to feed the sward and kill off any moss. Players will notice a rapid 'greening-up' after this application.

The 'Wiederman' will be used each month with a brushed, light sand top-dressing throughout the season to help maintain healthy root systems.

The use of the rolling 'iron' will help to flatten the surfaces for quick recovery and playability. Recovery should be noticed after 10-14 days, particularly if we get a good Spring growing season with ground temperatures rising to double figures. The iron will then be used twice weekly after Easter (weather permitting) when the cut height is reduced to 4mm. Pins will also be moved twice weekly.

Recent surveys and agronomists' analyses of the structure of topsoil strata of our greens has shown that they are in the 'excellent' range and are continuing to improve. This is the result of a long-term programme of planned maintenance and dressing.

The Mounds

Unfortunately, owing to some weather delays, the planned re-shaping of the mounds on the 14th and 15th holes has not been done. Therefore it has been agreed to cut those areas of the mounds that are inside the boundaries of the fairways each month. Hopefully, this will enable golf balls to be located quickly. Please be advised that the cutting of these areas may encourage rabbits to dig burrows, and therefore all players should take care as the ground may be very uneven.

The mounds located in the areas of rough will themselves be treated as rough and will be cut in May and then in September. We continue to look at the use of 'Rescue' to thin out the rough areas, although this is a very expensive and time consuming process.

Please show your appreciation to the greens team by giving them a few words of encouragement and thanks whenever you see them. They work very hard to provide you with a great course! Any moans or complaints should be directed to the Board via Rosie Atkin or Stret, never the greens staff!

Thanks for your patience and understanding during the course works.

Tuesday 17th March saw the yearly match among our ladies section of the Lady Captains team taking on the Lady Secretaries team. It was a closely fought game but the Lady Captains team just managed to edge the victory. Wendy was really pleased with her team's performance.

With been so busy clearing the shop out on Sunday afternoon, unfortunately we couldn't make it to the Mothers Day lunch carvery that was put on in the clubhouse. Everyone that I have spoken to since has said it was fantastic though and they all really enjoyed it. Well done to Paul the chef and his team. Sunday carveries and now available every Sunday. The food really is good. Why not treat your friends and family and bring them up to the Club and give it a try.
