Greetings from Stretton Wright
Hornsea Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

I hope all those that have played during the last week have noticed all the new signage around the course. From all the feedback forms, one thing that has stood out for a while was that our signage needed to be improved. I hope you all agree these signs should help and many thanks to all the sponsors who have kindly sponsored them this year. Please if you can try and support our sponsors. All 18 holes are sponsored this year and we are just awaiting proofs on the ones that are missing. If you are interested in a sponsor board in the future please see Yvonne in the shop. Before anyone else say's anything to me, I know the plan on the 9th is not correct. It could be in a few months though!!

It was the Club AGM last Thursday and can I just say congratulations to Sam Middleton, Mark Cooke and Graham Markham who have been elected to the board and to Paul Lockwood and Jonty Hall who were re-elected. The board at Hornsea do a wonderful job in what are still testing economic times. I shall look forward to seeing what the new members of the board can do to make your experience at Hornsea even better.

One of the points raised at the members meeting last Thursday night was the carrying distance on some of the holes over the long grass. I popped out on Friday morning and measured them. The 3rd hole from the yellow post is 150 yards, white post 161 yards. 4th hole 115 yards from the yellow, white 121 yards and the 15th the carry from the yellow to the top of the mound was 125 yards and 132 from the white. On Friday when I did this, the tee markers on the yellows where all roughly 20 yards forward of the yellow posts. Please note the measurement on the 4th was to over the ditch. To carry the left hand mound is 50 yard further but there is plenty of room to the right that is cut. The long grass really does help to give great definition to the course and from what I see and read there are an awful lot of clubs now doing it.

It is hard to believe that when next week's newsletter comes out it will be September. Where has this year gone. It also sees the start of the gents Hull and District Winter Alliances. The first event is at Withernsea on September 3rd. The team picked is 7.45 A Rosindale & L Nicholson, 8.15 A Bird & N Wright, 8.30 D Close & T Close, 12.15 S Branton & M Cooke and 12.30 B Peasgood and this year's Hull and District Alliance President L Ward. Good luck to you all. I can't play as it is the Captains away trip to Selby. On the same day it is also the East Riding Open. We have 3 entries so good luck to Leigh Gawley, Rees Brown and David Peasgood.

EAST RIDING MATCHPLAY FINAL

Leigh Gawley played in the East Riding Matchplay final at Ganton on Tuesday against Ben Borman from Cottingham. It was a testing day in a strong wind. Nathan who went up to caddy for Leigh sent me a text message just after 7.20 in the morning saying how cold and windy it was. Bobble hat weather!! I was busy at work on Tuesday morning but did manage to find some time in the afternoon to pop up and support Leigh. It was good to see a few up there watching.

When I got there they were just about to start the 2nd round and Leigh was looking comfortable at 4 up. After the first was halved in bogey, Ben then started to play some really good golf that started with a birdie at the difficult 2nd hole. By the time they reached the 10th tee, Leigh was only 1 up and even though he still held the lead Ben really had the upper hand. After hitting his tee shot into a bunker on the 11th and from that position could only splash his ball out Leigh found himself back to all square. The next few holes really was a nerve jangling emotional roller coaster with both players really putting the followers through it!! Bad shots, missed putts the lot!! The turning point though came at the 15th after Leigh had again hit his tee shot into a bunker and again could only splash out and Ben was in the middle of the fairway looking good. Ben though found the greenside bunker with his second shot and could only make a 6 from there after leaving it in.

This left Leigh needing to hole a tricky 3 foot putt for the win which he did and was back to 1 up. The 16th hole at Ganton has to be one of the hardest par 4's in golf and I must say that Leigh on Tuesday under the circumstances hit two of the best shots I have ever see. A most fantastic tee shot that split the fairway followed by a perfectly struck 9 iron to a couple of feet really put the pressure on Ben and Leigh was 2up with 2 to go. Leigh then struck another fine shot off the tee on the 17th to find the par 4 green and after Ben came up short and failed to get up and down a nice lagged putt from Leigh saw him become the East Riding Matchplay Champion. Really well done Leigh.

GREENS

Well what a difference a week makes. The greens really have come on and if you look closely you can now see the new growth coming through as well as all the other work that was done filling in. We have pretty well had perfect weather with the rain and warm temperatures but it does show that doing the work at this time of year they really do recover very quickly.  At the AGM plans for which holes will be re bunkered where shown. They are the 9th, 12th and 13th and the plans are shown below. This work will be carried out again this winter.

SENIORS

Well what have we elderly statesmen of Hornsea Golf Club been up to of late. The away day was played at the Oaks Golf and spa and it turned out to be a very good day. We could've done with a few more players but that didn't spoil us having a good day. The eventual winner was George Hornsey closely followed by Peter Bridges in second and our very own chef Paul Nelson in third place. The nearest the pin was won by George and the longest drive by Jeremy Hall although it was close because Tony Barnsley laid claim to that. Upon investigation it turned out Tony was claiming it because of his allowance his second shot being well passed Jeremy's meant he was there for net 1. Good try Tony. The weather was great and that always helps to have a good day.

So what else have we been up to? Friday 21st saw us hold our annual mixed match and what a great turn out for that. We had the grand total of 12 gent's and 12 ladies. Again the weather was kind to us and a great day was had by all. The eventual winners were Jan Elder and Mike Guidry with 40 points just pipping myself and our lovely lady captain Wendy Lockwood. Having said that Wendy and I would've just taken the glory if I hadn't missed my putt on the last because our back 9 was superior a Miss Wendy will no doubt remind me every time our paths cross. She's started already by informing my wife Angela whilst we were in Tesco's today. Wendy it was a pleasure and an honour to be your partner and also to witness Di's 'Hornsea Jig' when she chipped in at the 5th for a birdie. I must add the ladies were great company. Well we only have three more matches to play so let's hope the results go our way after which I will give a summary of the season.

Regards,
Gordon McGlynn, Seniors Captain
