Greetings from Stretton Wright
Hornsea Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Good afternoon. I hope you have all had a good week. It's the 1st October and that means winter rules start today with placing on fairways and the plugged ball rule in operation. I know that some of you love to put the ball on a good lie every time and get to have a go with your fairway woods more often. Remember you can only lift and place on the fairway though!!

Slow play seems to be becoming a problem again with a few complaints been made in the shop. Can you all please click here to read following as with the days becoming shorter every little bit we can do to help will make a difference.

On Saturday morning whilst walking to work at 6.30am I did think it was a little cold. Just after 7 as the sun was starting to come up I received a text message from Gareth saying "Ah - first frost" I know it turned out to be a lovely day but it does unfortunately show that winter is on its way!!

It doesn't happen very often but I do like it when I get sent photos. This one was sent to me by Stuart Naylor and if you look carefully you will see Nick Tudor who wasn't at the junior lesson but played his second shot on the 18th from very near to where they were practicing. After Nick played his second shot all the kids gave him a round of applause!! Sorry Nick!!!

It is quite noticeable that not as many are taking divot bags. The introduction of these really has made a big difference but as the ground softens up more divots will be taken. Please look after not only your hole that you are responsible for but also any other divots you see. Pitch marks are also starting to become more of a problem again. Please try to repair at least one per green. Two would be better. Don't forget which hole to look after too. Click here to see which ones.

Well what a year Jordan Spieth has had. He earned this year $22,030,465 which worked out at $881,219 per event, $259,346 per round, $13,908 per hole, $3,623 per shot!!! Not a bad effort. I thought a better stat was that his caddy Michael Greller earned $2.1 million. This works out that he earnt more than 221 PGA Tour Golfers. He would have ranked 39th on the PGA Tour money list just behind Phil Mickleson. Not bad for a school teacher who started caddying for Jordan in 2013.

DRIVING RANGE BID

After many months of hard work, I am sad to inform you all that the Golf Clubs bid for a grant from Sport England Inspired Facilities has been unsuccessful. It was probably one of my worst moments at the Club when Ron Newey and I opened the letter after all the time that has been spent on this. This would have really helped us develop our practice facilities at the Club. We shall now be investigating any other funding opportunities. If anyone can help or has any ideas please contact the shop.

MEMBERSHIP INCENTIVE

Well I find it hard to believe but not one member has managed to find or introduce a new full member during the month of September. I guess none of you fancied the £100 off your subscription next year.

LADIES SECTION

The ladies section are pleased to announce that they have chosen Sarah Stonier to be Caroline Barkers Vice Captain next year and therefore the Ladies Captain in 2017.

MORE GREAT WORK BY MEMBERS

We have had a few members busy helping again on our course. Firstly Malcolm Hester has been busy painting all the path edges on the 4th, 5th and 15th. They all look much better. Thank you Malcolm.

Whilst on my way back from seeing the good work Malcolm had done, I came across Peter Bridges and Colin Evans working on re cladding the hut near the 2nd green. What a great job they were doing too. I'm sure if any of you need a new shed building these guys could do it for you. As I have mentioned before if you would like to volunteer to do any jobs around the course please let me know.

TOP 100 COURSES IN YORKSHIRE

We received a phone call in the middle of last week to say that Hornsea Golf Course had made the most significant move up the rankings than any other club in Yorkshire. We have moved up 6 places and are now in 23rd place. I am sure with a little more hard work on the course we shall soon be in the top 20. The website states that Swan Golf Designs have been an integral part to the enhancement of the clubs ranking. No other course in the Hull and District are in the rankings so as members you are lucky to be playing a course that is rated so highly. Please take a look on the Top 100 courses website to see how courses are ranked and also what clubs are above us. There are some great courses in Yorkshire. Have a look by clicking here

EAST RIDING ALLIANCE

Last Wednesday saw the first Gents East Riding Alliance of the year. It was played at Boothferry and our team did ok. Steve Uzzell partnered Nathan Wright to Hornsea's best score with a 7 under par 66. Stuart Branton and Mark Cooke came in 3 under and Ady Rosindale and Lee Nicholson 2 under. With two score's to count Hornsea are well placed in tied 5 place. Steve and Nathan finished tied 7th overall. The next event is to be played at Brough on 7th October.

TUESDAY CLUB

Well another season of the Tuesday Club has come to an end. What a great season it was too with it all going down to the last week with a few players in contention if they could have produced something special. In the end though, Bill Railton came out on top with an average of 38.3. It was a shame Alan Smith was away fishing on the final week as he only finished 0.3 behind. This is the final table of all the leading players.

ROLSTON BAR TROPHY

26 players entered last week's competition having all played at least 8 rounds of the Tuesday Club, all with the hope of lifting the Rolston Bar Trophy. It was a closely fought contest with not many points in it. Coming in with 35pts and taking 3rd place was David Schofield. Also on 35pts was Tony Hood who had a better back 9. Taking home the trophy though was Darren Reeve who scored an impressive 37pts. Well played Darren. A big thanks goes to Patrick Slaven and Tony Hood for all their hard work again in doing all the organising this year and checking of the cards. If you have never taken part it is a great way to meet other members and have an enjoyable but competitive mid-week game. Only about 26 weeks before it will be starting again.

GREENS

Those of you that have played during the last week will have noticed quite a bit of work going on around the course. It is the time of year to get everything cut back and tidied up. Most of the long grasses have been cut and taken away. Ditch banks the same. Hedges around the course are getting cut and the clippings taken away. This is all very time consuming when the rest of the course is still growing and is still been constantly cut. Last week the staff just did not have time to do any work on the bunkers and you could probably tell. This week though they are getting edged and all given a good tidy and hand raked. Please if you are passing a bunker that needs attention don't stand and moan about it, run a rake through it. It was nice on Monday to chat to some visitors as they came off the course. They said Hornsea's greens where the best greens they had played on all year and they had played over 25 different courses. Just shows doing the greens maintenance in August really does work.
