For those that attended the Captains finale dinner on Saturday night what a great night it was. The food was excellent and the entertainment had people up and dancing for hours. Well done to both Alan and Wendy and all others involved in making it such a great night. A first for me was seeing Ian Lockwood drinking water all night as he was at work early the next morning. I couldn't resist taking a picture!!
Whilst Paul has been away this week with his coaching trip to Portugal, which looks like it has been amazing; I took the Junior lesson on Saturday. Even though it was cold there was still a fantastic turn out of some really good and improving golfers. Every one of them impressed me this week.
I know it is a room in the club that not many of the gents will have been in but I just wanted to mention what a fantastic job Wendy Lockwood has done in getting together pictures of just about every past Lady Captain the club has ever had and putting them all together in a couple of frames under the names of the Lady Captains. I am sure a lot of hard work will have gone into this project so well done Wendy.
Talking about the ladies can I just remind you all that it will be the new Lady Captains Drive In next Tuesday at 9am and it would be nice to see a lot of members supporting Caroline Barker as she hits some balls from the 1st tee.
Slow play is again a regular topic of conversation at the moment. Can you all please read this and try your hardest to get round a little quicker especially during the next few months with our shorter days. Click here to see the Winter Golf, Local Rules document.

CAPTAINS CHALLENGE
It was another win for Alan and myself this week but we nearly threw it away. Jim Jeffries and Shaun Smith were our challengers. I was the only one to make a par up the first to go one up then I chipped in on the 2nd for a birdie and Alan then holed a putt which must have been nearly 50 feet to go two up after two and three bits. After 6 holes we were cruising at an easy 4 up, but then Shaun Smith came to life, hitting the ball a mile and with a short game like Seve, and with a bit of help from Jim who made a great par on the 14th the game was far from over. Stood on the 17th tee they had clawed the game back to only been 1 down. The 17th was halved in 4's which included a couple of 3 putts one of which was me and cost us 3 bits, but I held my nerve with a solid par on the last was good enough to win the hole and take the match 2up. Thanks for a great game though boys and also for both making a generous donation to the Captains charity.
GREENS
More of the same this week as leaf collecting is still the main priority and setting up and keeping the course tidy. All the new ball washers are now out and look very smart. The edges of the fairways have been cut to help with the definition and in the sheds new longer hazard posts are been painted. As most of you that have played this week will know that work has continued on the 2nd trees and I would think they will all be out by the time this newsletter reaches you.
RULES EVENING
A very interesting presentation by rules officials Dennis Trickett, Cameron Thomson and John Deeming from the YGU, took place in the clubhouse last Wednesday. Although only attended by disappointingly few Hornsea members plus a group from Withernsea Golf Club, the evening was both informative and entertaining. Using a variety of slides, visual aids and scenarios, the 'three wise men' took us from the tee, 'through the green', into bunkers, bushes and water hazards; searching for our ball and seeking relief, onto the greens and out of bounds, and drew attention to the penalties we might incur on the way. Speaking for myself, it confirmed many things I knew, but also shed light on a few things I didn't, and gave information on recent and future changes. Most interestingly, it highlighted a few 'urban myths' that seem to have been around for quite a while!!! A highlight was Cameron, stumbling into a bunker and grounding his club, dropping his clubs in the sand, raking his footsteps on the way across to his ball, using his hands and club to uncover the embedded ball to identify it, and then covering it back up again! All for NO PENALTY!!!! The one thing that was made clear was that the rules are there to be used and followed, and to keep the game moving briskly! Any questions? Ask any of us that were there!

SATURDAY STABLEFORD
59 people have now entered the Saturday Stableford. If you have not there is still time as you only need to have 10 scores in during the winter to qualify and you have until the 23rd of April which is the last Saturday. Please enter next time you are in the Pro shop if you would like too.
EAST RIDING ALLIANCE
Yesterday the East Riding Alliance was held at Hessle Golf Club. It was another great result for Hornsea with Steve Uzzell and Nathan Wright taking 1st place with a great score of 9 under par 63. Even with this score they only won on the last 9 from a pair from Hessle. Hornsea's other score to go with that was a 70 and these 2 scores have moved Hornsea into a tie for the lead with Hessle with a total score of 661. Scarborough North Cliff had a bad day and are now 9 shots behind. The next event is in 2 weeks time at Ganstead. I'm not sure if it will be updated yet but please follow the link for more information. www.eryga.co.uk

PAUL GIBSON - PGA TEACHING PROFESSIONAL
As mentioned early in the newsletter Paul has been away this week with a group of Hornsea members on a coaching trip to Portugal, so he is not doing his usual weekly blog. I have been in contact with him though and they have all had a fantastic time. I am sure he will be organising another trip next year so if you are interested please have a word with him. www.paulgibsongolf.co.uk
