Pros news

Good afternoon all. Well what a terrible week it has been. We are so lucky at Hornsea that the course is rarely closed but this last week with snow to start and then all the rain it has been saturated and so closed for most/all of the week. I went out for a walk on Saturday afternoon and took some pictures. It was really bad. As I was finishing this newsletter on Wednesday morning it was pouring down again and the first tee was completely under water.

These pictures (below) were taken at 2pm on Wednesday afternoon and show looking back to the 11th tee and the lagoon that has come over on the 14th!! Not good at all.

We will need a few dry days if there is to be any chance of golf at Hornsea this weekend.

For those that follow Twitter it is at times very interesting. Last week these pictures were sent to me by Golf Heritage London (@LdnGolfHistory) from someone who I guess has too much time on their hands!! They have found this article in an old "Golfing and Cycling" book from July 1898. I for one love the history of Hornsea Golf Club so I hope you all find this interesting. It made me get out the clubs centenary book out and have another read.

As mentioned for a few weeks now new stock is arriving daily. The last few days has seen a big delivery of PING clubs, bags and accessories. We will also be holding a PING Fitting Day on the 12th April. This is the perfect opportunity to try out the latest equipment under the eye of an expert fitter. Please call the Pro Shop to book your appointment.

New
Puma Gents and Ladies clothing and shoes have arrived and are already proving popular. Below I have attached some images from the shop that show our 2016 clothing offering, which includes the following brands: Callaway, PING, ProQuip and Puma

Some of you might have noticed that the practice nets have recently been closed. This was due to our health and safety experts' report which had spotted a couple of problems that could have been dangerous. They suggested a couple of things and these have now been rectified so the nets are now back open.

Now I know a few of you will think that the compressor at the end of the 18th has just been forgotten. Trust me that is not the case with hours and hours being spent trying to sort the problem with it not working. It now has a heated lamp in its box and the box has been insulated. Does it work now? No!! Take it to the sheds and it works fine. In fact it works fine everywhere apart from sat at the bottom of the 18th! Electrics to the box seem to be ok. Do we have any experts as members that might be able to offer us any help?

It's good to see quite a few have you have already picked up your subscription notices from the clubhouse. This really does save the club quite a bit of money these days not having to send them by post. Please next time you are in have a look for yours if you have not done so yet.

HULL & DISTRICT OPEN MEETINGS

The sheets for the first of the Hull & District Open Meetings are now up in the clubhouse in the Gents locker room.

Please put your name down next to the time you are at the club to avoid disappointment.

If all the times are taken I'm sure if you ring the club you want to go to they will have some spare times.

PRO AM

It is good to see a few entries coming in for the Pro Am that will be held here on Friday July 8th. It really is a great day so if you would like to put a team in please let us know in the shop. You can bring your own Pro or we can find one for you.

PICS FROM THE COURSE

I know not many of you will have been out on the course recently but I did think more of you would have sent me some pictures. All I have had this week is these from Dave Blanchard Jnr from a cold winters morning and a great video that I can't get to work on here from Ross Meggison. Come on. More of you must have taken some pictures over the years. I would love to see them.

EAST RIDING UNION FIXTURES

For those of you that are interested last week I put a few entry forms up on the East Riding Union board in the clubhouse. The events are the Seniors Championship 20th May, Amateur Championship 31st July, Boys Championship 5th August and the East Riding Open Championship 1st September. It would be nice to see Hornsea members following in the success that Leigh Gawley had last year in the East Riding Union Matchplay, especially with Howard Palmer been the President this year.

KNOCKOUT COMPETITIONS

As I have mentioned before the knockout entries are now open and you can either print of a form from the link here or use one of the sheets in the clubhouse. Closing date for entries is the 18th March, so not long left now.

GENTS HULL AND DISTRICT GOLFING ASSOCIATION

Well after last week's big build up to the Hull & District event here at Hornsea unfortunately after all the snow and rain last Wednesday the event was postponed for a week and was due to be played today. Well after more heavy rain yesterday unfortunately it has been cancelled and this event will now not be played. It will all be down to next Thursday now to see if Hornsea can lift the title going there with a two shot lead.

EAST RIDING WINTER ALLIANCE

After all the snow and rain Driffield Golf Club have postponed the last event of the year until next week so we shall have to wait one more week to see if we can lift the Hull Daily Mail Trophy.

Competition results

Nothing to report this week with us being closed all week. Now that is a first since I have done the newsletter.

Upcoming events

Saturday 12th March - Pro's Stableford
Sunday 13th March - Individual Stableford inc Mark Hurn Qualifier
Tuesday 15th March - Lady Captain v Lady Secretary Match
Thursday 17th March- Midweek Stableford

HORNSEA MASTERS PAR 3 COMP

Preparations are still on going for Hornsea's first ever par 3 competition that will take place on Masters Sunday. Craig the Club Captain has sourced a jacket for the winner and very smart it looks too. I hope whoever wins it will wear it with pride throughout the year. The entry sheet will be available from this Friday and is outside the shop. There will be gents and ladies prizes. Entry fee is only £5 each which will cover prizes and a donation to the Captains charity.

Course news

GREENS

Well with over 75mm rain this week (3 inches) other than making sure all the drains are running and the ditches are clear work on the course has been limited as they just can't get out with any machinery. I have put this before but it might give you a little idea how much water we have had. One inch of rain falling on 1 acre of ground is equal to about 27,154 gallons and weighs about 113 tons. The golf course here at Hornsea covers roughly 120 acres. Now that is a lot of water!! Some lifting of lower branches on trees has been done but most work this week has been in the sheds making sure all the machinery is working well. Next week is supposed to be Greens maintenance but this might be limited to what will be able to be done with the ground conditions around the course being so bad.

Gareth has asked me to put up these links for you all to watch. They are from America but might answer some questions regarding tree work and inconsistent bunkers.

Golf Care

Picture this…

Your ball bouncing through the club car park, causing significant damage! Cars can be easily repaired at a price, but the situation could be a whole lot worse if you strike a fellow golfer, or passer-by. We want our members to be covered against such perils – and there are many more, such as theft and loss of golf club subscription - so speak to us about getting covered with Golf Care.
