So who thought Jordan Spieth had it in the bag on Sunday night and went to bed? I must admit I was close to doing so but I'm pleased I didn't. What a finish and great for Yorkshire golf. Well done Danny Willet. He really played some great golf in that last round not dropping a single shot in a fantastic 67.
Below are the Callaway clubs that Danny used to win the Masters.
- XR16 Driver (Standard Head, not Pro) Diamana White 60 X-Flex
- XR16 3 wood Diamana White 70 X-Flex
- XR16 5 wood Diamana White 70
- X-Flex Apex Utility Irons (18 & 24)DG X100 Superlite
- Apex Pro 5-9 iron DG X100 Superlite
- Mack Daddy 2 Tour Grind Wedges 47-S, 54-T, 58-T DG X100 Superlite
- Odyssey Versa WBW #1 Wide Putter
- SR-3 Ball
It also shows that even the very best, hit bad shots when the pressure is on. I thought it was quite funny though as some of the point of sale that Titleist had sent through before the Masters promoting there golf balls got it slightly wrong!
Silver Tees
The "Silver Tees" are now out and in position to use by anyone who would like to play on a slightly shorter course with the tees in easier positions.
I shall be getting the course measured by someone from England Golf from these positions.
Also in future we will in time be able to hold qualifying competitions from them.
Gents Knockout
Last Saturday saw young Alfie Anderson take on Paul Duckworth in one of the gents knockouts.
Despite playing well, Alfie lost but Paul said he had to play really well to get the better of him.
Here is a picture of them finishing on the last.
Texas Scramble
The start sheet is now up outside the shop for the first Monday night Texas Scramble of the year.
It is a 5pm start on 9th May.
HORNSEA PAR 3 COMP
Last Sunday we tried something a little different at Hornsea. To coincide with "The Masters" we held our own Par 3 competition.
The start sheet was nearly full and in the end 76 golfers tested their skills at 18 par 3's. We didn't quite emulate the 9 hole in ones that they had in the Masters par 3 competition but everyone had a great time. I for one found it much harder than it looked and hard to believe but I have actually been round Hornsea off the full course in less shot's than it took me on Sunday!! We shall do it again next year. The prize winners were:
LADIES
Best Gross - Jan Elder
Best Nett - Caroline Barker
2nd Nett - Sarah Stonier
GENTS
Best Gross - Leigh Gawley
Best Nett - Malcolm Train
2nd Nett - James Webster
3rd Nett - Ray Mckie
4th Nett - Craig Gawthorpe
A little like the Masters, a jacket was presented to the overall winner Malcolm Train.
He will keep this for one year and will be expected to wear it whenever he is at a club function!!
If he doesn't I think a £5 fine for the captains charity should be the penalty!!
GRAND NATIONAL SWEEP
On Saturday we held a sweep for the Grand National in the shop. All the horses sold quickly. The following have prize money to collect from the shop.
1st £40 David Smith
2nd £25 Mick Gilroy
3rd £10 Phil Newton
4th £5 Kevin Bond
PING FITTING DAY
Tuesday saw us hold a PING Fitting Day at Hornsea. It was horrible to start with, it was raining heavily and I did think we might have to cancel. It did brighten up though and in the end was nice and we became quite busy. It was the first time that I had really had chance to try their clubs. I was quite impressed. In fact everyone that came seemed to think the same. Can I thank PING for coming and everyone that came for supporting. I shall be trying to arrange another one for later in the year.
EAST RIDING PRESIDENTS
At the East Riding Union of Golf Clubs AGM which was held last Wednesday Howard Palmer took office as President for the coming year. He becomes Hornsea's 13th President (in his words it's a good job he is not superstitious) following in the footsteps of many of our well known former and current members. They were, 1954 R Roach, 1965 R H Morfitt, 1966 J R G King, 1969 J L Major, 1976 M Hesk, 1982 A R Walker, 1986 B Falkingham, 1989 R H Bielby, 2000 F D Jordan, 2004 B W Kirton, 2008 S L Wright, 2001 D V Hodgson and now in 2016 H C Palmer.
Hornsea has now had 3 more Presidents of the Union than any other club. Can I just say from us all at the Club we hope you have a great and successful year Howard. Pictured here is Howard and our most recent Presidents.

EAST RIDING ALLIANCE CHAMPIONSHIP AND FAIRHURST TROPHY
Last Wednesday the above competition was held at Hornsea. It was quite a windy day with the odd heavy shower which made conditions difficult. It was a full field with golfers from all over the East Riding playing. Comments from all that played were very complimentary about our course. It was interesting to hear that most of the courses in the York area are still closed or only have a few holes open. Carlo Cuillo from Hull walked away with the Championship with a fantastic gross score of 69. Steve Uzzell from here tied for 2nd with Nick Ludwell from Selby on 71. The Fairhurst Trophy 74 was the best nett score with 6 players managing that score. Taking the trophy though was S Dawes from Malton.
FOOTBALL CLUB AM AM
Last Friday saw Hornsea Golf Club held an Am Am in aid of raising funds for Hornsea Football Club. What a great day it was too with 26 teams playing in the end. 4 teams dropped out just before the event which is always a shame. This was the first year that a trophy was presented to the winners.
Keith Gorton who was a great supporter of both the football club and golf club, who we sadly lost in 2013, will now have a trophy played for every year in his name.
This year's winners of that trophy with a great score of 88 points were Tony Hood, Mark Edgar, Darren Reeve and Paul Lockwood.
TUESDAY CLUB
26 players played in the first week of the Tuesday Club. A great score of 40pts by Pete Frith was the best score with Colin Smith taking 2nd place with 37pts. Kevin Bond won the nearest to the pin on the 18th. Not that it was particularly near to the pin!! Remember this is open to all members with some great prizes to play for.
This Tuesday 23 went out. Scoring was tough though after heavy rain had fallen in the morning which made the course play very long. Mastering these conditions though was Graham Markham with 38pts and 2nd was Ian Pearson with 36pts. A much improved shot compared to the week before by Tony Hood won the near pin.

GREENS
Well it has been yet another wet week making life really difficult again to get any cutting done. Grass is growing but it is just too wet to get any machinery out on the course. The greens are looking good though and have recovered well after the work that was done a few weeks ago.
Work has started on and around the 7th tee and is already looking good.
FANTASY LEAGUE
What a start for Steve Robinson in the Fantasy League this year, 19th in the world. Let's hope he can keep up this good early form. As for myself, well let's just say my team performed about as well as I did in the par 3 competition!! We now have 15 people competing in the Hornsea Golf Club league. It would be nice if a few more joined. Look at last week's newsletter for information on how to do this.
