Pros news

Good afternoon golfers,

Can you believe it is nearly May and it's still so cold. I hope when we do get some better weather it lasts for a long time!!

This picture was taken on Tuesday morning!! Few interesting things in this week's newsletter so please make sure you read it all.

I am going to start this week with some news about wildlife on the course. We all know what a great job Colin Evans and Peter Bridges did on the sheds last year but have you noticed the shed on the 9th tee. They put a bird box on that one and it now has occupants. 2 chaffinches have taken up residence.

Now if anyone can get a picture you will have done a better job than me!!!

Now it would be great to see some more entries than we have had in previous years in the Tomlinson Family Cup this Sunday. Rules of entry, Open to pairings from any family unit, other than those comprising of both spouses/partners. Pairings may comprise of one or two generations, who will not necessarily be living in the same household. I think that means quite a few of you could play.

Many congratulations to Keith Marshall who made a hole in one on the 12th hole last Wednesday playing in a seniors match against Driffield.

He becomes a member of the king hole in one tie club now having had more than one hole in one.

Well done Keith.

PREFERRED LIES

Due to the poor weather conditions we have experienced lately I have contacted the Yorkshire union of golf clubs. They have agreed to let us extend the preferred lies and the embedded ball rule until the end of May.

GOLFCARE GOLF INSURANCE

I know I have mentioned this before but it really is important that you are all covered with insurance when out golfing.

Golf Care offer some great deals so please follow the link to find out more.

CAPTAINS AWAY DAY

I just want to give you all the heads up on this one as I will be putting the list up shortly. On Friday 22nd July I have arranged a trip to Holme Hall for Captain Craig's away day. We shall be playing 27 holes and food and prizes will be included. If there is enough support I shall organise a bus too. Please get it in your diaries and get the time off work if you need too. I for one am looking forward to it as we have a couple of ex Holme Hall members here that keep telling me how fantastic it is.

Club news

YORKSHIRE COUNTY CARD

Now here is your chance to go and play lots of golf courses all over the country at much reduced fees. As a member of Hornsea Golf Club you can now apply for a Yorkshire County Card. It costs £10 for the card but you can make some great savings on green fees at more than 1,300 golf clubs across the country.

For more information please click here

SUPPLEMENTARY CARDS

Over the last few months I have been asked so many times by members of the gents section for shots back it really is getting ridiculous. It happens on a daily basis. The people asking are members that very rarely or never enter club competitions of which we hold roughly 100 per year. For a long time now members have been able to put in "Supplementary Cards" This is really for golfers that can't play in club competitions due to work or family commitments. This is something Hornsea has never really advertised but it goes back I believe to 2008 maybe earlier. The main reason I think it was not advertised is that we do hold so many competitions which at the time the golf committee felt was enough for all golfers to get their correct handicap.

Well I want those golfers that are struggling or playing well to start putting "Supplementary Scores" in. There is an admin fee of £3 per entry, the same as it is to enter a club competition, and you may put up to 10 cards in per year. You must sign in the "Supplementary Card" book before you go out to play. It is recommended that you return 7 or more cards for your handicap to be brought up by the computer in the annual review. Handicap reviews will only take place if either competition or supplementary cards are completed or evidence from other internal recorded competitions is taken. (Tuesday Club, Saturday Stableford). Please look at the following link for more information which is taken from England Golf. (UHS stands for Unified Handicap System).

TUESDAY CLUB

Not many played this week with the weather been pretty nasty. Richard Johnston who had posted on Facebook before he went, "So pleased I joined the Tuesday Club last week!!"I guess he was not looking forward to going out in the sleet and snow but he managed a fantastic score of 41pts. This was 4 better than anyone else could manage with Chris Faure taking 2nd place with 37pts.

Not one person managed to hit the 18th in 2 so no near the pin winner this week. At least it won't be long Rich before you are back in the sunshine!!!

CAPTAINS CHALLENGE

Well the 90% rule did us again this week as Lindsay Ward and Paul Duckworth made use of all their shots. In the end Craig and myself only lost 2&1 but off ¾ handicap we would have won! Not that I'm a bad loser or anything!

It was a good game though but in the end we lost the front 9, back 9 and the game. We did take 6 bits off them though. Can I thank both of them for a great game though with lots of banter and to them both for making very generous donations to the captain's charity.

Due to a few things happening we don't have a challenge now for 3 weeks.

LONDON MARATHON

Oh my word. What a fantastic achievement our Lady Captain managed on Sunday. Now we all know she likes her running but to complete the London Marathon in 3 hours 36 minutes and 44 seconds is a great achievement. A personal best for her too!! Really well done Caroline

She was back playing at Hornsea on Tuesday and was looking good. She wanted me to thank everyone that has sponsored and supported her. If you have not sponsored her I would hope you will do so now.

Please click here to do so.

LADIES TEAM MATCHES

The ladies are now in full swing with their team matches which take them all over Yorkshire. As long as they send me results I shall put them on here so we can all see how they are doing. I received this from Chris Gregory A team captain last Thursday. After a very trying journey on the mini bus and arriving about an hour late we managed to win 4&3. The ladies of Ilkley were very friendly and accommodating so a good day was had by all!

The weather and the course were fantastic!! Unfortunately for the A team they lost their next match against Brough 4½ to 2½.

GREENS

Cut, cut, cut again this week. Even with the cold temperatures everything is growing. We have just about got on top of the rough now it has dried out enough to get machinery out onto the course. Dyke banks have been cut and ponds will be done soon. By the time you receive this we should have got some turf down near the 7th tee. Areas that have not got turf will be seeded once the temperatures rise. You will all be please to know that all the ropes have now been taken in. Now if you are one that does take a trolley or a buggy can you please make sure you don't take them between bunkers and the green. This really is just general etiquette.

HORNSEA 150

Well the weeks are passing and Leigh and Joe are starting to realise what they have let themselves in for. On Sunday evening Joe played 18 holes on his own as quickly as he could. He played every hole putting out each time. He played the front nine in 44 minutes and completed the full 18 in 1 hour and 37 minutes. He kept count too and was round in 88. Now I'm not sure if it is true but whilst Joe was doing this Leigh was in the pub!!! Only joking Leigh!!

When the two of them attempt the 150 holes they really need to do each round in under 2 hours to start and finish in daylight. Quite a challenge I'd say. On the evening of the challenge a BBQ will be taking place for everyone. It would be great to see lots of people there to support them. 24th June is the date for your diaries.

FANTASY LEAGUE

I had another bad week!! Enough said!
