Pros news

Good afternoon to you all. It is amazing how a bit of sunshine gets more of you out on the course playing which is good to see. We have some great summer clothing in stock too to help you look the part. Why not pop in and see if we have anything to tempt you. Remember even if you don't play well it is always good to look the part!

Now I know some golfers must walk round with their eyes closed due to bunkers not been raked, pitch marks not repaired and divots not put back but have you all noticed the new flags. I know some of you have as the comments are very positive. They do look great. These have been paid for by the ladies section from funds raised at last year's Christmas mixed competition.

It is nice to see the trees coming into leaf at last. I took this picture down the 16th on Tuesday morning. I will never forget playing with Jack Hardy many years ago and he said these were his favourite trees on the course because of their colour when they first come into leaf.

I have had a lot of interest regarding the Captains away trip to Holme Hall on Friday 22nd July. The sheet for those wanting to go is not available yet but I shall let you know on here when it is. I just need to confirm food prices etc with Holme Hall. It is looking like it will be roughly £30. If anyone wants to go on a bus the cost of the bus will be split between those on it.

Remember tomorrow is the Hornsea Gutty. Your chance to come and watch some of the best amateur golfers in Yorkshire playing at Hornsea. Who knows you might learn a thing or two!

MONDAY NIGHT SCRAMBLE

The entry so far for this coming Monday nights Texas Scramble is very disappointing. Only 10 teams have entered so there are plenty of tees left available to book. They are always a great night but these events will not be put on if they do not get supported. Please try and get a team of 4 together and put your names on the sheet outside the shop.

LADIES PRO AM BROUGH

Can I just thank Caroline Barker, Nicky Salzl and Wendy Lockwood for their fantastic company at Brough last Friday in the Ladies Pro Am. The conditions at times were absolutely dreadful with heavy rain and a strong wind blowing. What a giggle it was though with Wendy keeping us all motivated!! My golf at times was a little mixed but the girls all played well and in the end we finished just outside the prizes in 11th position.

PICS FROM THE COURSE

Can I thank Dave Blanchard for this great picture that was taken as he was playing here last Friday.

As mentioned above I think we had just had this whilst playing at Brough!!

Can anyone guess the hole?

Colour Contrast

This was taken on Monday evening by Leigh Gawley whilst playing the 6th.

Some great colours with the contrast between the sky and the grass.

Keep the pictures coming please.

WILDLIFE ON THE COURSE

Gareth sent me this one earlier in the week of a newt of some sort. It was found wandering around on the 10th tee. It was taken to the 8th pond.

Paul Lockwood didn't get a picture but he saw a Little Egret near the ditch on the 17th. These are apparently quite rare in the UK. Now this is what a Little Egret looks like but was not taken on the course!!

As I have mentioned before, even if you are having a bad game keep your eyes open as you never know what you might see.

SATURDAY CLUB

Can I firstly thank Paul Lockwood for sorting all the results and sending this report.

The weather played a major factor in this year's Saturday Club Results. Only 20 of those signed up had the required 10 recorded rounds to qualify. Nevertheless, it produced a very close finish with only 3 points separating the top three in Division 1, and a tie for the winners of Division 2, who shared the first and second prizes combined.

Only three Eagles were recorded, the lowest total in many years of this competition. Thanks to everyone that took part in this Winter comp. Have a good summer, Paul Lockwood.

2nd £75 Leigh Gawley 359pts

Individual Round - Craig Gawthorpe 45pts
Wooden Spoon - Steve Prout

2nd & 3rd DIVISION OPEN

Last Saturday 134 people entered our 2nd & 3rd Division Open from all over the Hull and District. The weather for a change stayed fair for the day after quite a heavy frost first thing. Sitting on the desk collecting cards it was nice to hear so many complimentary comments about our course. Here are the leading scores in both divisions.

Div 2

1st N Blenkin, Hessle, 40pts, 2nd M Pritchard, Springhead, 38pts 3rd N Jordan, Hainsworth Park, 37pts 4th C Chapman, Springhead, 37pts 5th R Phipps, Sutton Park, 35pts.

Hessle won the team prize.

Div 3

1st W Dowson, Cave Castle, 40pts 2nd S Holliday, Cottingham, 40pts 3rd S Hubbard, Cave Castle, 39pts 4th S A Prout, Hornsea, 38pts 5th R Johnston, Hornsea, 36pts.

Cave Castle won the team prize.

7 players managed to get a 2 but only 5 went in it. Quite a costly mistake not entering. £45.20 each J Wilson, J Deeming, M King, M Keightley and Hornsea's very own Jon Magee.

MIXED INVITATIONAL OPEN

Well the weather on Bank Holiday Monday was a little disappointing for the Mixed Invitational event with it starting to rain just as the first ones set off. It really was quite miserable then for a couple of hours. It certainly didn't dampen the spirits of all that played though. The format of one ladies score and one gents score to count always proves to be a tough test. In the end 1st prize was taken with a great score of 83pts with the team of Jan Elder, Tom Elder, Joan Mullins and John Mullins. In 2nd place with 82 was Debbie Goddard-Taylor, Kevin Taylor, Laura Key and Alan Key. Caroline Barker, Alan Barker, Annie Lightfoot and Martin Redshaw came in 3rd with 78pts.

A special mention though needs to be made as Sally and Adrian Bird played in what was their first attempt at mixed golf. I saw them as they finished and they were both still on good form so I suspect we shall be seeing them playing in many more mixed events. They did ever so well too coming 4th overall.

OVER 50'S AM AM

Wednesday 4th May saw Hornsea Golf Club hold an Over 50's Am Am. The weather recently as you all know has been fairly desperate but despite this the Hornsea green staff had done a wonderful job in producing a golf course that was in fine condition. I sat on the desk all day and all comments were very positive with everyone enjoying their rounds. For a change the sun was out and temperatures were a little better but there was still a tough breeze blowing which provided a tough challenge for all golfers. Times are already filling up fast for next year so please contact us as soon as possible if you would like to enter next year. 38 teams played today. We have another Over 50's Am Am next Wednesday with a few spaces available. 01964 534989 for more details. Can I just thank Peter Blood for helping out on the desk today. We have a new score system that he has developed and is nearly ready to go live. Also the three starters that got you all off on time, Peter Bridges, Paul Lockwood and Colin Evans. Please see the attached results. Prizes for the first 7 teams are in the form of vouchers that have been put into credit in the Professional shop at Hornsea. I hope to see you all playing here again this year.

Please click here to see the results from the day.

SUPPLEMENTARY CARDS

I am just including this again this week in case you missed it.

Over the last few months I have been asked so many times by members of the gents section for shots back it really is getting ridiculous. It happens on a daily basis. The people asking are members that very rarely or never enter club competitions of which we hold roughly 100 per year. For a long time now members have been able to put in "Supplementary Cards" This is really for golfers that can't play in club competitions due to work or family commitments. This is something Hornsea has never really advertised but it goes back I believe to 2008 maybe earlier. The main reason I think it was not advertised is that we do hold so many competitions which at the time the golf committee felt was enough for all golfers to get their correct handicap.

Well I want those golfers that are struggling or playing well to start putting "Supplementary Scores" in. There is an admin fee of £3 per entry, the same as it is to enter a club competition, and you may put up to 10 cards in per year. You must sign in the "Supplementary Card" book before you go out to play. It is recommended that you return 7 or more cards for your handicap to be brought up by the computer in the annual review. Handicap reviews will only take place if either competition or supplementary cards are completed or evidence from other internal recorded competitions is taken. (Tuesday Club, Saturday Stableford). Please look at the following link for more information which is taken from England Golf. (UHS stands for Unified Handicap System)

TUESDAY CLUB

Can I start this Tuesday Club report with some bad news to all that are playing. All I do is look at the Tuesday Club book to get the results and by the look of it again they money was short and Nev Cook has had top up the money. This really is not on as it is the second time this has happened. Please pay in before entering a score. It is now £10 short. 29 played this week and 37pts was the leading score. Three players managed this score but with a better last 6 Paul Lockwood took 1st prize from Darayl Slingsby. Also on 37 but just missing out was Paul Hitchen. Nearest the pin this week was quite close and I hope he made the putt?? Good shot John Magee.

GREENS

It is that time of year when no matter how hard you try to get on top of it the grass just keeps on growing!! Everything has been cut and cut again this week. I popped out on Tuesday morning to have a word with Gareth and every member of the greens team was cutting. Tee's, greens, surrounds, fairways, first cut of rough. They were all very busy and the course looked a picture.

HORNSEA 150

Leigh and Joe did a bit of training this week as their challenge to play 150 holes in one day is getting ever closer.

They played 18 holes trying to see how quickly they could get round using just a 5 iron and a putter!!

Now Leigh went round in 93 and Joe just broke 100 taking 99 blows.

They completed 18 holes in 1 hour 44 minutes and I think both of them missed having a wedge as it sounds like they both visited a few bunkers!!!

Other news

FANTASY LEAGUE

Well here is one for all of you that are doing Fantasy League to think about. Andy Kelly last week used the auto pick system. He came 10th in the world!!!

As for my team after Friday night all my team were looking good and I really thought I would be making up some ground. Well it didn't last as all my players struggled on both Saturday and Sunday. Steve Robinson still leads the Hornsea league but his lead is not as great now as it was.
