It's a busy newsletter this week with lots of results for you all to look at. A great week for lot's of Hornsea members too.
I have had a lot of people asking about when I am having a Callaway Fitting Day this year.
It has taken quite a bit of organising but I have at last got a date for you.
Sorry girls it is on a Tuesday again. 10am till 2pm on June 14th will be your chance to come and try Callaway's latest offerings.
If you want a fitting please ask in the shop.
CAPTAINS AWAY TRIP TO HOLME HALL
On Friday 22nd July a Captains Away Trip has been organised to Holme Hall. I have now sorted the food and price. For only £30 you can enjoy coffee and a bacon sandwich, 9 holes of golf, soup and sandwiches, 18 holes of golf, a roast beef dinner, sweet and coffee. Prizes will also be included for an individual 9 hole stableford and an 18 hole betterball stableford. What a great day it will be. The sheet for entry is now available outside the shop. Please enter in pairs. If you want to go on the bus (cost to be split by those on it) please also tick where it says next to the names. Those going on the bus will be out teeing off in the earliest groups. I shall try and arrange for the bus to pick up and drop off in two places, Hornsea Golf Club car park and the Humber Bridge. Places are limited to 60 so please book and pay early to avoid disappointment as I'm sure this is going to be a popular trip.
HORNSEA GUTTY
Friday 6th May saw many of Yorkshires best golfers come to Hornsea to play in The Hornsea Gutty. This is a Yorkshire Order of Merit event and is now in its 10th year. The weather as we all know has been pretty grim for the last few months with all courses really struggling. Gareth and his greens team did a great job though in preparing a course in fantastic condition that proved to be a good test for all.
Leading after the morning round was Oliver Tasker from Cleckheaton with a fantastic score of 2 under par 70 which included 5 birdies. This was 3 clear of home player Rees Brown. Afternoon scores improved a little but a 77 saw Oliver looking favourite to lift the title.
With only 2 groups left to come in a fantastic afternoon score of 71 from Fergus Barron from Dewsbury & District to go with his morning 76 was enough for him to clinch the title on the last 18, lift the trophy and take a prize worth £225. A great birdie on his 36th hole a real highlight.
Nathan Wright, Hornsea, won best nett overall, Will Marshall, Heworth, best morning round with a 76 and Robert Wardle, Selby, 73 best afternoon.
Prizes were awarded to the top 5 placed golfers also which are vouchers to spend at any Professional shop. If you were not at the presentation these will be sent to you. A few people asked if it would be a qualifier for handicap with preferred lies in operation. The Yorkshire Union had been informed and granted us an extension until the end of May. The competition was a qualifier. CSS AM 75, PM 74.
Thanks to all who played and we shall look forward to seeing you all next year.

MEDALS
This coming Saturday sees the first Gold Medal of the year and I just need to remind you all that if you play on Saturday before 1.00pm you must enter the competition. This was a decision made by the Golf Committee last year just for the 5 main Gold Medal days.
MONDAY NIGHT SCRAMBLE
A slightly disappointing entry of only 12 teams played in the Texas Scramble on Monday night. Yet again though all that played enjoyed this format of golf. It was a fantastic evening to start with but the time 9 holes had been played I would think everyone was wishing they had put more clothing on. It is the first time I have ever played in a tee shirt with winter mitts!!! Scoring yet again was close with only 3 shots between the top 11 cards. Coming out on top with a gross score of 63 was Alan Barker, Stephen Teal, Stuart Pearson and Paul Brummitt.
Now I know a lot of people don't play Texas Scrambles as they say only lower handicaps win. Well this team play off, 10, 12, 15 and 18 which gave them 5.5 shots and a nett score of 57.5. I must also mention Stuart Pearson had a slight accident whilst out playing. I'm not quite sure how he did it but he managed to break his zip on his trousers on the way round!! I think by the look on Pauls face he was quite shocked to win too!! (Pic of winning team).
1st £25 each Alan Barker, Steven Teal, Stuart Pearson, Paul Brummitt 57.5
2nd £17.50 each Stretton Wright, Jonny Fisher, Paul Sellers, Craig Gawthorpe 57.6
3rd £12.50 each Mark Cooke, Stuart Branton, Chris Teal, Adrian Bird 58.1
4th £5 each Steve Uzzell, Rees Brown, Nathan Wright, Malc Train 58.2
The sheet is now up for the next Monday evening event. For a change we are having a Yellow Peril. It will be a 5pm start again on Monday 6th June.
PICS FROM THE COURSE
Here is a good one for you and I'm going to tell you were it is as I don't think anyone would get it. This is Ian Sizer on Saturday playing his 2nd shot on the 16th from just in front of the 15th green!!!! Apparently he had a bit of trouble with his tee shot from the back tee!
A little more wildlife was spotted earlier this week by Stuart Hine whilst walking from the 4th to the 5th tee. Quite a large toad this time on the path.
Thursday 5th May - Mid Week Stableford
1st £25 Graham Winship 40pts, 2nd £15 Stephen Fawcett 39pts, 3rd £10 Adrian Rosindale 38pts.
2's Comp - £12.50 each Adrian Rosindale, Chris Wilson, James Webster and Darren Reeve again!!
What a fantastic entry this week for a Mid-Week Stableford. 59 entries which I think is a record.
Saturday 7th May - Holmes Ramsden and Cutting Cup Qualifiers

OVER 50'S AM AM - 11TH MAY
A little bit of rain greeted the early starters to Hornsea's 2nd Over 50's Am Am in two weeks but in the end the sun came out and all 39 teams which travelled from all over Yorkshire and some from even further afield enjoyed good weather even if a cool breeze made the back 9 play hard. Gareth Williams and his team yet again produced a golf course in great condition which everyone that played enjoyed. Tee's were positioned a little further forward compared to last week but scoring was similar with a fantastic sore of 87 taking first place. This was from a team from Wakefield with handicaps, 0, 6, 12 & 14. You might all be surprised as I was that the 0 handicap was only on the card twice but I know for sure he must have been there or thereabouts for the team to produce such a great score.

Well done to all prize winners that are highlighted in yellow (attached). Please ring the Pro shop at Hornsea and they will tell you what you have won.
Can I thank our starters Steve Robinson, Allan Scarlett and Steve Bowling for getting everyone off on time and also a huge thanks from myself and Yvonne for you all getting round in roughly 4 hours. Thank you, we hope you all enjoyed you game and we shall look forward to seeing you all again. Just under 80 teams have played in the last two weeks. OTHER RESULTS FROM LAST WEEK
The gents scratch A team and B teams both won against Cottingham and Driffield. In the gents Mail on Sunday competition we beat Ganton 5-0 and now play Forest Pines away in the 5th round. The ladies A team had a great win at Sandmoor beating them 4 ½ - 2 ½ and Jan Elder and Sue Howell have progressed through to the 4th round of the Daily Mail Foursomes after beating a pair from the KP Club 5&4. Well done girls.
ALFIE ANDERSON PRODUCES AGAIN
It was an early start for Richard Anderson last Sunday as he was up and off for 5am with Alfie and Harry for them to go and play in a Wee Wonders event At Wike Ridge in Leeds.
It was worth the trip though as Alfie won his division and Harry did not do too badly either. Alfie now goes through to the next round on 24th July.
If he gets through there he will be playing in the final at St Andrews.
Good luck Alfie.

TUESDAY CLUB
Poor weather I guess put quite a few off this week as only 16 played this week. The weather though didn't stop Darrell Slingsby from producing his best round for ages though. 41 points was a fantastic score and in the end was a full 5 shots clear of Brian Hawksworth who managed 36. Nearest the pin this week was Paul Lockwood. Let's hope for better weather next week and a much better entry. Remember this is open to all and you only need 10 scores to qualify for some fantastic prizes.
Another busy week of mainly cutting grass. Pond banks have been cut back and ponds cleared of algae build up from the surface. All the irrigation has been checked and a number of heads have been changed. These are working well. We are looking to apply liquid fertiliser mixed with iron to improve colour and growth. We shall do a light vert cut to deal with lateral growth and the poa seed heads which is always a problem at this time of year. This will improve surface smoothness. If temperatures stay warm and with improved growth we should be able to apply a little top dressing again to smooth the surface in the weeks to come.
