Hi folks. Well I'm sorry but this week's newsletter will be fairly brief for a change as I have been so busy with one thing or another going on at the club and I have also needed to spend some time hitting balls as it is the Pro Am here tomorrow. I shall report next week on how I get on. Well I will if I do ok!!!!
One of this week's highlights was Skipsea School coming to Hornsea to have a go at golf on Tuesday. This was all organised by Paul Gibson and is great to see. It was quite amusing though as mid-way through the session a number of the kids (20ish) all wanted the toilet. Well on their way back Stuart Wood was on the practice ground behind the shop and for a change he hit a really good one which was met with a great cheer and lots of clapping from all the kids. Stuart was well happy!!!
Can I just thank Steve Prout from 'Prout Engineering' for making some permanent marker disks for the silver tees. I know he has put a lot of hard work and effort into making them.
They look fantastic and when they are in place I shall get the silver course measured so we can hold competitions off those tees.
It really is great when members help out so big thanks also to all of you who do help improve and enhance everything at the course here at Hornsea.
CAPTAINS AWAY TRIP TO HOLME HALL
The draw has now been done and as always those going on the bus will be going out first. We have 48 going which is a perfect numbers for us all to play in 4 balls. There is still room for more though but you must now book in full 4 balls if you want to go. Can all those that are going please pay your £30 and those that are going on the bus an extra £15. I really need all this in as soon as possible. Please remember if you can't go you must now find a reserve yourself to make sure the numbers stay correct. The draw can be found by clicking here. If you are going on the bus can you please let me know if you are a Humber Bridge pick up so we are not waiting here in the car park at Hornsea.
150 HOLES WAS A BREEZE!!
There was lots of talk whether or not it was possible and whether or not we had done enough training but at 9.20pm we both tapped in on the 150th hole cheered on by 40 or so spectators who had walked the final few holes with us.
On a magnificent day matched only by the weather we slugged it round for 17 and a bit hours playing some truly magnificent and some truly awful golf but this was just the side note to what the day was all about - raising money in local lad Josh Fell's memory for the captains charity Cardiac Risk in the Young. To date we have raised £3003.31 which will pay for youngsters to have their hearts screened for free to check everything is working properly.
We couldn't have done it without the army of volunteers including all the caddies who were forced to walk at 2 hour per round pace to keep up with us! Caddies included; Howard Palmer, Stretton Wright, Dave Hill, Chris Wilson, Paul & Charlie Duckworth, Paul Lockwood (Snr), Chris Fielder (Driffield GC), Wendy Lockwood, Nicola Salzl, Caroline Barker, Craig Gawthorpe, Steve Prout, Paul Gibson, Nathan Wright, Dave Peasgood and Carl Horth.
A special mention must go to Paul Duckworth & Lindsay Ward who put on an all day BBQ with the meat donated by Paul the chef. This alone raised about £400 and it was quite evident there was a real feel good factor going at the clubhouse with everyone seemingly getting quite merry - no names!
Also special thanks to all the photographers on the day who have captured some wonderful images which will create lasting memories. Can't name everyone as there were so many pictures taken but key photographers included Dave Blanchard (Jnr) for bringing his drone giving some stunning aerial shots of the course, the boys from Sportsmail Online for the filming they did as well as Angela Baker for the professional images as we neared the end of our marathon journey.
We'd also like to mention Jim Clubley for loaning his "pimp my ride" buggy - the kids and quite a lot of "big kids" we're quite drawn to having a ride in that! Also thanks to Colin & Alan Smith and Alan Barker for lending their buggies too which helped ferry people around during the day.
Final thanks must go to everyone who donated or popped up during the day, it was this what really spurred us on and we know that Josh's parents, Rich and Donna were truly humbled by everything you have done to contribute to CRY in memory of their son.
There were no holes in one this year or shots holed from 150 yards but for those interested Joe beat Leigh 22&21 in our match-play side bet - it's the only time I'll ever beat him and he was giving 66 shots but thought I'd mention it still!
We are now planning what's next for 2017!
Thanks again,
Joe & Leigh

CAPTAINS WEEKEND
Well what a fantastic weekend for golf our Gent's Captain Craig had. It was a little breezy on Saturday which I know a few of you found tough but at least the sun was shining and everyone stayed dry. On Sunday again conditions were good and whilst I spent all day on the 10th tee with Craig and the juniors at times when the sun came out it really was quite warm. Please click here to find all the winners and also what money was raised for the Captains charity 'CRY'.
Please click here to view a full photo gallery from the weekend.
Craig also sent me this for you all to read.
Can I firstly thank Hornsea Golf Club for making this weekend possible and all of the members who attended the Captains weekend, for they generosity and support. It really was amazing.
I must give a special mention to Tina for all of her support over this weekend, and her help in the halfway house on Saturday.
Wendy (Paul's sister) for running the halfway house all day on Saturday, keeping everybody fed and watered.
Patsy Yeates, Pam Robinson & Mary Smith, for running the halfway house on Sunday, again making sure everyone who visited was well looked after.
All of the ladies who kindly donated cakes and buns, which were all absolutely lovely.
Paul Nelson, for donating all of the scones, and for also looking after everyone on the evening of the summer ball.
Wendy Lockwood, for her auctioneering skills - what a great result with the monies raised, also for all of her time she had given in helping to organise the summer ball.
Alfie, Sam & Mat, for doing a great job all day Sunday on the 10th Tee for us. They all hit it far better than Stret!!!!
Caroline Barker and everyone else in organising the Summer ball, and in making sure we had a full house.
Gareth Williams, for presenting us with a great course yet again - and also for some of the flag positions he used on the Sunday (I did ask him to do these - as I was unable to play over the weekend)…
Richard & Donna Fell, for their support at the summer ball, and also with the donated items they gave us for the auction.
Finally, the biggest thankyou's must go to Yvonne & Stretton for the amount of hours of hard work and help they had given me, in making sure everything behind the scenes, the golf and the presentation evening and everything else involved with this weekend was so well organised.
Again, I want to thank you all, for making this weekend a very very special one for me, and one that I was very proud to be a part of, I will never forget this weekend.
Thank you all so very much.

GREENS NEWS - JUNE 2016
As you can imagine the green keeping team has been very busy preparing the course for general play and the many events the course hosts. All areas are mown regularly to ensure the course looks and plays at its best. However with heavy morning dews grass clippings have been an issue but dispersed when we are able.
Bunkers banks have been flymo'd and edged twice this month with clippings blown from the sand to prevent contamination. Ditch and pond banks are cut to maintain presentation. Orchids are once again visible on the ditch bank between the 4th and 15th holes. Certain copses of trees have also been cut and trees strimmed around to help speed up play.
We have been rolling the greens twice a week and have also been hand cutting when time allows. This is to improve green speeds and surface trueness. However this can lead to surface compaction. Consequently we have microtined the greens with 8mm tines to relieve surface tension and improve water penetration. Following the aeration the greens where sprayed with a wetting agent and a biostimultant.
Finally, congratulations to both Paul and Andy on passing their college courses as Bishop Burton College.
Rainfall:
June 41mm
2016 369mm
