As this newsletter comes to you today the first round of "The Open" will be well on it's way. I would love to see Lee Westwood do well this year but there are so many great players all on good form it really is hard to pick a winner. I'm sure Royal Troon will prove to be a tough test. If any of you are going I'm sure you will have a great time.
Well I must confess I have slipped a little with my attempt at getting fit and losing weight this year. I think a combination of being so busy and just not having the time to get to the gym is a big part of it. When I go to the gym I am far more careful with what I eat and drink etc. Well on Monday morning I was back in the gym again and I am determined to stick at it this time. I do need to find some breakfast smoothie recipes. This one was not the best!! Do any of you have any you can recommend?
I know it was a few weeks ago now since we held the Callaway Fitting Day but I tried out the XR 16 driver similar to what Danny Willett used to win the Masters. I was so impressed I now have one in my bag. When it goes boy does it go!! I can even hit it past Nathan now!

HORNSEA PRO AM
Last Friday saw Hornsea hold its annual Pro Am with Professionals and teams coming from as far afield as London and Liverpool. When the rain woke me at 4am on Friday morning I feared the worse as torrential rain was falling and I was wondering how on earth Gareth and his team could possibly make the course playable. It was still raining hard when I took the nearest the pins out and all the staff were doing there upmost to get the event on. By the time the first team set off at 9.30 other than a very strong wind blowing the rain had cleared and it stayed fine for the rest of the day.
The course as it has been all year was presented immaculately and all comments that came my way throughout the day and at the presentation were all excellent. Most found it tough but fair with good shots rewarded and bad shots punished. Nick Ludwell from Selby in the end won the Professional prize with a fantastic score of 67. Not bad considering he has a really bad back and conditions were really quite tough!! This score was good enough to win by 3 from Alex Belt with Chris Crowder, Chris Halley and local boy Rich Pace all one shot further afield. It was a team from Malton, Energytek that won the team prize, C Halley, E Ruddock, A Elcock & N Tomlinson with a great score of 128.
Callaway Cavaliers came in 2nd with 129 N Ludwell, A Crawford, M Smee & M Dixon. Most important of all though was that even though my individual score was not great (played well for 16 holes!!) I managed to bring my team Luisiana Pacific home in 3rd place with 131. Well played Rees Brown, Martin Champs and our Club Captain Craig Gawthorpe.
I must mention all the sponsors, Next Step Money, Johnston & Jeff, NBM Timber Products and Storetec. Thanks also to Jimmy Pape and the Yorkshire PGA. To all the girls at the Halfway House, Wendy Lockwood, Sue Howell, Nicki Salzl and Caroline Barker for providing fantastic cream teas and to everyone who supported the event. I must also mention Yvonne as even though I spend hours and hours sorting this event Yvonne is the one that sorts all the paperwork etc. 33 teams played in the end as two had to cancel on the day. It would be nice to see a few more teams playing next year as it really is a great day. The provisional date is 7th July 2017.

EAST RIDING JUNIOR MATCH
Last Sunday Hornsea hosted the East Riding Junior Match against Harrogate and Huddersfield. Here is the match report.
EAST RIDING V HALIFAX & HUDDERSFIELD UNDER 18'S AT HORNSEA GC, 10TH JULY 2016
Hornsea Golf Club was again in splendid condition for our fourth fixture of the season against Halifax & Huddersfield. This was the first time we had home advantage and the team were in a positive frame of mind going into the morning foursomes.
Things didn't get off too well as we lost the two opening matches to some solid golf by the Hal' & Hudds' pairs. It looked odds on to lose match three as Brendan Wright and Jack Maxey found themselves 2 down with 4 holes to play. Brendan then hit a fantastic drive on the long 15th hole and after a solid second from Jack found the green a par was good enough to win the hole. Another big drive on the par five 16th, this time from Jack, resulted in another win as the Hal' & Hudds' players were forced into going for too much with their second shot.
Onto the par three 17th and the momentum continued when Brendan found the green and Jack rolled in the birdie putt to go 1 up with one hole to play. Both pairs parred the 18th; the comeback was complete and the momentum was well and truly in our favour. Lewis Hunt and Charlie Milner won 4&3, Tom Duck and Matty Atkinson won 4&2 and James Halford and Josh Raynor finished the foursomes with a fine 6&5 win. The score at lunch was 8-4 when it looked like it was going to be 6 points all. The win from Brendan and Jack changed the whole feeling of the match going into the singles.
The first four matches were shared evenly with Matty Raybould winning 2&1 with five birdies and Tom Duck coasting to a 5&4 win to go unbeaten on the day. More wins came thick and fast as we demolished the Hal' & Hudds' team with some great golf on a beautiful course. Brendan Wright 1up, James Halford 4&3, Lewis Hunt and Jack Maxey both 7&6, Jude Tarbotton 3&2, Josh Raynor 4&3, and Matty Atkinson 6&4.
The performance of the afternoon came from Charlie Milner who found himself 4 down after the front nine holes. We have been working as a team on being more positive and just focusing on the next shot and hole and not getting too focused on how bad or well things are going. Charlie managed to half the 10th hole after just missing a putt for birdie and with a new focus he started hitting great shots and put the pressure back on his opponent. He then won 5 out of the next 6 holes to get 1up with 2 holes to play.
The rest, as they say, is history. Charlie showed his best qualities under adversity and showed the fighting spirit we will need going forward. This result will now put the East Riding joint top with Sheffield in the YIDU league after 4 matches, with 3 wins and 1 defeat.
JUNIORS REPRESENT EAST RIDING
On Sunday our East Riding Junior Team Champion side, Albert Anderson, Harry Anderson & Will Marshall travelled to Middleborough to play in the Yorkshire Team Championship. I must say it was a little disappointing that no members went to support them despite efforts by myself and Paul Gibson. These kids and many more are the future of golf and our golf club. They need your support. Paul Gibson made a great effort though by keeping all his Twitter followers informed of how the boys were getting on with regular Tweets throughout the day. It was a great experience for the boys and I'm sure they will have all learnt a lot.
Please click here for all the final scores.
Well done to Harry Anderson who with his 37pts was the 5th best score of the day. Big thanks must go to Paul Gibson for all his efforts not only on this day but also for all the time he spends helping with all the juniors.
KNOCKOUT MATCHES
Well in the end all games had results recorded so I did not have to scrub anyone. I could not believe how many of you had left it until the last day though!!! Please get your games organised as soon as possible!!
JACK MAJOR, NORMAN SEATON & JOHN WOOD CHALICE
This Saturday see's our 36 hole Club Championship. Good luck to all that are playing. I guess Leigh Gawley and Joe Palmer will breeze round only 36 holes!!!
Please find the start sheet by clicking here.
TUESDAY CLUB
Well boys what on earth went on this week. I know conditions were good but the scoring from some was fantastic. Let me start with Pat Slaven who with 43pts didn't win a thing!! Great score though Pat. I now move on to John Magee. A great score of 44pts which included a hole in one on the 17th was only good enough for 2nd place. I'm sure John will buy everyone a drink next time you see him…. Now I move on too Charlie Betts. 46pts!!!!!! Be warned my friend I have my eye on you now and I like the comment next to your score!!! Great score though. Steve Millar made up for an average score of 31pts by winning the nearest the pin on the 18th in 2.
I can't wait to see next week's scores now as the standard is now getting tough to win…
GREENS
I'm sure you will all be like me and cutting grass like mad at home. It is the same for all the staff here. Usually by now grass would have slowed down a little but all this wet and warm weather it really is a never ending task for all of the staff. On Monday Gareth did manage to get over the greens with the micro tine which helps to get air to the roots. This will probably be the last time this will be done until the main greens maintenance is done in mid-August.
One of our members played at Moortown earlier this week and sent me this picture of how they are growing the grass in places around their course.
Now that does look like a long carry.
New Yardage Markers
Have any of you noticed that all the yardage discs have all been replaced with new ones?
They are no longer all broken and look much better.
