Well I have to start this week's newsletter by mentioning the Open on Sunday.
I'm sure all that watched it would agree that the performance by Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson was some of the finest golf you could ever wish to see especially under those circumstances. I'm sure it will be talked about for many years to come. If you have not had chance to watch it please try and find a replay. In the end I for one am pleased Stenson won his first major as he has been a great golfer for many years.
I must also congratulate Phil Mickelson though for the way he was during all of the tournament but also how grateful he was in defeat. We could all learn a thing or two from him.
The only thing I have in common with either of them is that we all use Callaway clubs and Odyssey putters!!!
So as I write this newsletter on Tuesday morning the ladies are just about to set off for their 36 hole scratch cup. Oh my it is a little warm!!! We really aren't used to it are we and where has this sudden blast of hot weather come from?
At 10.30am I caught Cathy Gorton just about to set off with a wonderful idea to help protect her from the sun. It's not often you see this in this country!!
I bet by the time this newsletter comes out on Thursday it will have changed again and we will all be wrapped up again!!!! I wonder if it might make you all come in and look at all the summer clothing we have for the ladies and gents. Special offer for the ladies too with a sale on of 25% OFF all clothing.
On Saturday whilst playing in the John Wood young Alfie found himself with a slight problem whilst playing the 6th.
A grass snake came across to try and put him off.
Well Alfie would have taken it home given half a chance.
Good job the guys he was with made sure he kept his distance!!
DIVOT BAGS
I know they have been in use for a few seasons now but we have lost a number of "Divot Bags" (75) Can you all check your bags etc and please make sure you return them after each round to the tub at the end of the 18th. If you are a visitor that might have mistakenly taken one home could you please make sure it is returned as soon as possible. These little bags really do help and save the green staff time so they can concentrate on other tasks.
CAPTAINS AWAY TRIP TO HOLME HALL
So tomorrow see's the Captains Away Trip to Holme Hall. I'm sure I will be asked a hundred times tomorrow but it is an individual 9 hole Stableford in the morning and an 18 hole betterball Stableford in the afternoon off 90% handicap. Both rounds will be off the yellow tees. Please remember this is also a day out for me also!!! I am looking forward to it though as it is a great course. Sunday 17th July - Am Am Open Special!!
What a great event this was. A shame more teams didn't play but in the end we had 15 teams. All teams before they set off had to draw a Professional that was playing in The Open on Sunday and that score was then added to the team Am Am score. Some teams had great Pro's and others not so good. I am sure you will all find it amusing to know we drew Kodia Ichihara and he shot 78 and finished in last place!! Not quite what our team was after!!!

KNOCKOUT MATCHES
Just so you all know and to be aware "Greens Maintenance" starts on 15th August and will last for approximately two weeks. Please make sure you get your knockouts played before this date or risk playing on greens that might not be as good for a short period. Extensions will not be given as the period to play your games has already been extended compared to previous years.
HULL & DISTRICT ASSOCIATION PAST CAPTAINS AM AM
Last week Hornsea held the above event and this is a quick report that was sent to me. Winners of the Hull & District Past Captains Association Am Am played at Hornsea on Wednesday were the guests from the Sheffield Union Captains Association. L-R Tony Price, Secretary, Mick Langan, Captain of SUCA, Jim Green Assistant Secretary, and Roger Powell, President. They had a great score of 94pts and in his speech at the presentation, Tony Price from Wath GC, asked to pass on his congratulations to Gareth Williams and his greens team for having the course in such immaculate condition. He added that the Sheffield Captains always look forward to playing at Hornsea, "not only because it is nice to play a course with no hills, but also as it is an excellent challenge of golf on great surfaces." He also thanked the catering staff for the excellent carvery meal after the golf.
The Ganstead team of John Page, Kevin Fitzsimmons, Tony Wilkinson and Mark Bird came second out of the 28 teams taking part. The Hornsea team of Brian Kirton, Mike Brooke, Tony Barron and Norman Broxham came eighth in the prizes with 87 points.
TUESDAY CLUB
21 played this week and even though it was a little warm conditions were just about perfect. Scoring was a little more sensible than last week though with Neil Jordan winning with 37pts.Charlie Betts was up there again in 2nd place also with 37. Nearest the pin this week was won by Barry Peasgood. By the looks of the sheet yet again someone has failed to pay as Nev Cook has had to give a loan again!!
GREENS
Gareth, Ray, Adrian Bird, Chris Reed and I went last week to go through the report that has been done regarding the ditch across the top field and to see if anything can be done regarding the flooding problems which seem to occur more and more when we get really wet weather. The report is very interesting but in the end the main problem is the culvert under Hull Road which is much too high. This is then acting as a dam which really slows down the ability for the water to get off our land. We are currently trying to see if that problem can possibly be rectified. He also suggested that all the pipes which are in the ditch across the course are jetted out to remove any build-up of silt. This will be done later in the year with the help of Adrian. Once the water does get off our course it makes its way to Hornsea Mere. There is an area on a bend which could do with cleaning out but it is really down to the landowner to sort. This again is something that we shall try and get sorted. If anyone knows any contacts please let us know. In the end we are on with trying to sort it as by the looks of our weather it could flood at times more and more which results in the course been closed.
More cutting again this week and all bunkers have again been edged and tidied up this week. I'm sure you will have all notice the two new trees that have been planted to the side of the 7th tee too. In time a few more trees will go in this area too. We did have a meeting planned for earlier in the week with a tree spade company to see if we can lift and move some mature trees. This unfortunately was cancelled by them but will be re arranged.
This week's blog consists of the following: Great Sunday at The Open, Rio Olympic disappointment and a Trip of a Lifetime.
