Pros news

Well I have to start this week's newsletter by saying we don't give swimming lessons at the Golf Club despite what Graham Winship thinks!! On Saturday whilst playing the 11th taking his time as his ball was near the edge of the pond he took one step back too many and ended up in the water. Unfortunately for Graham his playing partners were unable to help him get out as they were all rolling around on the floor in laughter!!! Lucky for Graham one of his playing partners had a spare shirt with them. Now is it just me or is it strange to take a spare shirt on the course?? Well Steve Carmichael is the man to be playing with if you decide you ever fancy a dip yourself!! As for his trousers these were replaced with waterproofs!!

I thought this was an interesting picture that was on Twitter earlier in the week. Many people moan about the holes been crowned not just here but on all courses. Now this shows the wear on one green from just one four ball with all the footprints. Just look at what happens around the hole!! Now imagine what it would look like after 50 four balls had played!

A lot has been on social media this week about the new PING iBlade. Now this is really designed for the better player but I do have a demo iron in if you would like to have a go.

CAPTAIN 2018

I know it is a while away yet but Allan Scarlett has organised a vice captain ready for when he takes over in 2017. Rees Brown will be Allan's vice (pictured above). For those that don't know Rees he is a 3 handicap golfer who regularly represents the Golf Club whenever he can. He is also a member of the East Riding Union team. I could be wrong but I would say Rees will become the lowest handicapped Captain we will have ever had. For those that have been to recent dinners at the club you will have also noticed that he is a fine dancer!! I'm sure we will all wish Rees well.

RAKING BUNKERS

On Saturday whilst playing in a competition one of the members hit his ball into the greenside bunker on the 10th. The bunker had been recently raked but very badly. Please when you do rake a bunker try and leave it how you would like to find it.

Despite this lie he did manage to get up and down for a par though.

CAPTAINS CHALLENGE

On Sunday morning it was nice to get out and play a Captains challenge match. With various things being on we have not had one for a while. This week's challenge came from Norman Broxham and Alan Johnson. It proved to be a tough game as these two boys can really play some good stuff. It was a tight start with most of the early holes being halved but by the turn we had managed to get to 2 up. They battled back well though and playing the 16th we were only 1 up. A birdie by myself on 16 though made it look like we had the game sorted but both myself and Craig messed up the 17th to hand them a lifeline to try and get a half. It was not to be though as a par 4 down the last was good enough to win the hole and secure the match 2up. Only 1 bit changed hands though in this tight game. Can I thank them both for their company and also for making a very generous donation to the Captains Charity.

FILEY EXCHANGE

The sheet for the Filey Exchange goes up tomorrow. It is opposite the shop.

Cost this year remains at only £20 and for that you get, coffee and bacon sandwich, 18 holes of golf, 2 course roast meal and prizes.

This is a great day out and fantastic value.

It is limited to 60 places so please make sure you get your names down to avoid disappointment.

I shall be organising a bus for those that would like a lift so please mark on the sheet if you want to go on it.

ALFIE MAKES THE GRAND FINAL

It has been confirmed that Alfie Anderson has qualified for the Wee Wonders Grand Final at St Andrews on 27th and 28th August.

I am sure we all wish him luck. For more details look on the website by clicking here

SKY SPORTS SUPER 6

For those that have maybe done this before I have set up a league. Please follow the link if you would like to join and make looking at the football results a little more interesting this year. Who knows, you could also win a cut of £250,000 if you get all 6 scores correct. If you are already in it to join the Hornsea Golf Club league the code is 4KGFVT

Club news

KNOCKOUT MATCHES

Just a quick reminder to those left in the knockouts that the next round needs playing before 14th August. Then remember it is greens maintenance so if you can get your next round played too it might be a good idea.

TUESDAY CLUB

Now I wonder if Tony Hood read last week's newsletter as he has done a new sheet for the overall standings up to the 19th July.

This week's winner with a great score of 43pts was Steve Bowling. 2nd was Colin Davy with 41pts beating Chris Reed on the last 9.

Nearest the pin on the 18th this week was Nev Cook

I must also mention Charlie Betts who with 40pts this week is definitely the man to be beaten now in the overall standings.

I know Graham Markham won't give up the challenge though!!!

GREENS

Yet again not a lot to say other than grass continues to grow and needs continuous cutting. Gareth did spray the greens with some iron and feed on Saturday morning to give them a bit of a lift. Some of you might have also noticed that some of the greens have had cores taken. These have been sent away to be analysed to give Gareth and his team an indication of what needs to be done in the upcoming maintenance weeks starting on the 15th August.

JUNIORS AWAY TRIP WOODHALL SPA

Last Friday Paul took some of our juniors to Woodhall Spa for a morning of coaching followed by 18 holes on the Hotckin Course. What a great day they all had too. It is many years since I last did a similar trip and some of the lads that went on that trip still talk about it now. I guess our current juniors will do the same as it really is a day to remember.
