Pros news

I'm starting this week's newsletter by giving you all prior warning that there will not be a normal newsletter next week as I am away in Liverpool for a few days.

I shall be taking some money off Nathan as we are going to play at Hillside!! This week's newsletter will also be missing a few bits as I had to send it in early.

It was nice on Monday to see the Junior, Lady and Gent event that Peter Mounfield organised take place. I'm sure all of the adults would have been quite impressed with how the juniors can play. In the end it was Alfie Anderson, Di Wills and Pete Wills who came out on top.

I know it might look a little strange with me in shorts but the start of the winter stock has started to arrive. Keep your eyes on the shop for all the new stock going out shortly.

Club news

LADIES SCRATCH TEAM

Wendy Lockwood gave me some great news on Tuesday morning.

The Ladies Scratch team have gained promotion into Division 1 of the Yorkshire Ladies league.

This is a fantastic achievement as Hornsea have only ever been in the 1st Division twice before.

Really well done girls.

Past Captains 'Classic' Golf and Dinner August 3rd 2016

20 Captains attended the Golf and Dinner at Hornsea G. C. in 2016. Mr. Craig Gawthorpe as present Captain; Messrs Sims, Hitchen and Stead as away Captains; and Past Captains, Messrs Barker, Marshall, Robinson, Lockwood, Palmer, Brooke, Barron, Wright, Broxham, Ducker, Railton, Slaven, Williams, Kirton, Palin and Scott.

A Dinner of Melon starter, Rump Steak and Vegetables, followed by Cheese and Port (Provided by the Captain, Craig Gawthorpe, and Immediate Past Captain, Alan Barker) was enjoyed by all. Winners of the Individual Stableford Competitions held earlier in the day were presented with their prizes by the Senior Past Captain present, Mr. John Scott, and Immediate Past Captain, Alan Barker.

Thanks were given to Paul Nelson and staff for the catering and bar facilities, Gareth Williams and his team for the excellent condition of the course, and all present for the good Company. Also to Alan Barker for organising the day as immediate Vice Captain.

The Captains gave the 'Loyal Toast', and remembered 'absent friends'.

Steve Robinson presented Brian Kirton with a gift, thanking him for his work over several years as the Captains' Representative. SR is now taking on this role and asked for feedback regarding the H&DGCA Annual Dinner as numbers were falling. Comments to be passed on to the H&DGCA Sec. There was also a plea for Captains to make themselves available for the Association matches each season.

NOTES FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Once again, it has been brought to our notice that a number of members are continuing to take their trolleys (and even ride-on buggies) onto the aprons between the greens and green-side bunkers. Golfers on the fringes of the 18th green is a common sight! Can we ask all golfers to avoid these areas of the course. This also applies to the area inside the bunkers and bridge around the pond on the 12th where a path has been especially constructed to avoid this. Thank you.

You may have noticed a brief article in the Hornsea Community Newspaper last week giving first details of a community fund that is being set up by DONG Energy, the company responsible for constructing the Hornsea Off-shore Wind Farm. The annual fund, worth £465,000 each year, is to be provided to support local communities and activities. The consultation is now taking place to receive ideas on how the fund should be spent, and which kind of activities should be eligible.

We believe that our links with the local community can be significantly boosted by improved facilities, and we are asking that you take part in the consultation exercise to put the case for activities such as ours forward. The consultation survey can be found on the website at www.grantscape.org.uk/fund/eastcoastcommunityfund

Please take the time to complete the survey giving our name and the development of community links as a worthwhile cause. The greater the number of responses, the better.

FILEY EXCHANGE

On Tuesday when I wrote this there was only room left for 4 more pairs. If you want to go please make sure you get your names down as soon as possible as it is limited to 30 pairs. It really is always a great day out.

GOLD MEDALS

After 4 rounds of the Gold Medal it is still all to play for with one round remaining. In the Division 1 Gross it is looking like a three horse race between Leigh Gawley, Ady Rosindale and Dave Peasgood. In the 2nd Division Joe Palmer is now 12 clear but it is far from over as 3 players could still beat him. Alistair Pearson though in the 3rd Division has the Gross in the bag. In the Nett competition it is still all to play for in all Divisions. I'm sure a few of you will be kicking yourselves for no returning when you see the score sheets below. The final round will be on Saturday 3rd September.

Please click here for the nett score sheet.

FILEY SENIORS OVER 50's

Last week Martin Rowbotham and Allan Scarlett won at Filey in a Seniors Open. I have been waiting for a report but all I've got is a picture. I guess they played well and had a good score!!

KNOCKOUT MATCHES

It is good to see that most of the games are now played and the finals are taking shape. 2 games are left to be played before this Sunday's closing date. Remember no extensions will be given as you have had plenty of time to arrange the games.

JUNIORS DO WELL AGAIN

On Tuesday some of our juniors went to play in the Bridlington Junior Open. Yet again they came away with the team prize after they all performed really well.

The team consisted of Albert Anderson, Harry Anderson, Will Marshall and Alfie Anderson

All of them also did well in the individual competition with the highlight been Alfie winning the under 12's with a nett 66.

GREENS

Another week of cut cut which does mean some parts of the course that are not in play might not look as tidy as some would like. As mentioned many times before if you think you can improve the look of any areas on the course I'm sure Gareth would not stop you. Please have a word in the shop if you have any ideas and would like to help.

As yet no one has offered to help with the gardens around the clubhouse that Steve Robinson and Colin Evans tend to look after. I'm quite sure some of you must have a little time to help them.

As mentioned above "Greens Maintenance" starts on Monday so as usual whilst work is been carried out on the greens you might find a few temporary greens in play. These will be moved back onto the greens as soon as they are playable.

There's always going to be an element of luck with any hole-in-one, but this is something else! Sadly for Thomas Bjørn, it won't go down as a competitive ace.. Still… worth a watch.
