Pros news

I'm starting this week with some great news about my own health. In November I had a small procedure on my heart to try and stop the problems I was having. A month ago I had a 24 hour heart monitor fitted and have been waiting for the results. Well on Tuesday I received a letter from my consultant who after looking at my results is really happy as my heart is now working well and not going into the strange rhythms it used too and my overall resting heart rate is fine and I should stop worrying about what my heart rate monitoring watch says! To say I am happy and relieved is an understatement and can I thank all of you who keep asking how I am.

So we are now into March and other than it been a little wet at times we really can't complain too much about the winter so far and I always think that once we get into March we are definitely through the worst of it. I hope I haven't spoken too soon as all we have had since writing this is heavy rain!!! We are lucky at Hornsea though, as we have remained open pretty well right through so far and don't have to play off matts or temporary greens. As I look through what is happening at other clubs in the local area we really are very fortunate here.

Shop news

We have had more deliveries this week to tempt you all. As I keep saying keep your eye on our ever changing shop so you don't miss out.

We do try and keep prices as competitive as possible, and keep a keen eye on our competitors' prices. If a product is not in stock we will try to match any price given from elsewhere as long as there is evidence. Please ask and we will always try and help.

Make sure you all read Paul Gibson's bit at the end of this newsletter as he has some fantastic news for you all.

Weigh In

So many congratulations go to Paul Duckworth who since January 1st has lost 29lbs which is 11.8% of his original body weight. His nearest challenge came from David Schofield who lost 21lbs, 9.5%. Big thanks to Paul though as he donated half of his winnings to the captains charity.

Of the original 16 that entered 11 got weighed on Sunday. The total amount of weight lost was 155lbs or 11 stone 1lb. A fantastic effort by all. Really well done to all.

European Tour Fantasy League

It was another hard week last week to pick players with again a lot of the top golfers not playing. Paul Duckworth though with some inspired picks won this week by nearly 100,000 pts. There is no change at the top of the leader board though with Paul Gibson still leading the way.

It is a World Golf Championship this coming week though so big money and points to be won.

East Riding Union Dinner

I know this has been mentioned before but it really would be nice if the gents members of Hornsea could get together and support Howard Palmer as he has had a great year as President of the East Riding Union of Golf Clubs this year. Please contact Steve Robinson if you would like to go.

New Caterers

You all have the opportunity to come and meet our new caterers on Friday 17th March from 6.30pm. Diego and Julie will be providing canapes as a sample of the great food they will be offering. I'm sure it will be a great evening. If you will be attending please add your name to the list which is up in the Rolston Bar or let Yvonne know.

East Riding Alliance

Last Wednesday we travelled to York to try and overturn our one shot deficit on Hessle. With the light now stretching out instead of it being both pairs scores to count it is now the best 2 of 3.

The teams of Steve Uzzell and Neil Jordan, Myself and Nathan Wright with Sam Middleton and Rees Brown completing the team. On a par 70 Steve and Neil managed a 63 with Sam and Rees managing 1 better, 62. These 2 good scores on a tricky day.

However this actually cost us 3 shots unbelievably with Hessle scoring a 59 and a 63. This means our deficit is now 4 heading into the final counting event at Hainsworth on the 8th of March. Fingers crossed we can do to Hessle what they did to us last year!

Hull and District Alliance

As this newsletter goes out, weather permitting, the last few groups will be finishing their rounds here at Hornsea today in the Hull and District Association Winter Alliance. Hornsea really need a great score with only two events remaining as Hessle now hold a commanding lead of 7 from Cottingham and 9 from Hornsea.

Ladies Alliance

Today weather permitting the Ladies should hopefully be playing at Malton so good look to all that are playing. I shall post next week on how they got on.

Captains Challenge

On Sunday Allan and I played our first Captain's Challenge match of the season. Our opposition came in the form of Ian Lockwood and Alan Hood. The banter started early on Facebook on Saturday night and continued throughout the game on Sunday. What a great game it was though with never more than one hole in it at any time. In the end even after Ian visiting some interesting places his partner held them together and we were all square coming down the last. It all came down to the final two putts, with Alan Hood stood over a 25 foot putt and Allan Scarlet a 20 foot big swinging putt.

Alan who had done a little prayer before he set his ball rolling went first and his ball was always missing left until it got nearly to the hole went it suddenly turned and fell in for a 4 nett 3. The pressure was now well and truly on the Captain who hit the most amazing putt which just went straight in the middle. What a great game with great company. Can I thank them both for making very generous donations to the Captains charity. Final score, all square we won 6 bits.

Junior news

Junior Academy

Now I just had to put this picture on this week as I was so pleased to see young Seth Topham wearing his Hornsea Golf Club Academy shirt and looking so proud to do so.

He is showing great potential and fully deserves his shirt.

Well done Seth.

Course news

Storm Doris

So last Thursday when you all would have been receiving my newsletter, roughly 2.30pm Storm Doris was passing over Hornsea and for about 4 hours it really was pretty terrible with heavy rain and a strong wind blowing which made it very cold.

A few people had played earlier in the day before conditions were too bad but finishing there round at roughly 5pm where two golfers that really did look like drowned rats as they finished! Chris Wilson and Steve Bowling were the brave two but I do think they will be thinking twice before going out in weather like that again!

Talking of Storm Doris I did like this picture that was posted on Facebook last Thursday.

Original Course Map

Some of you might recall me mentioning about looking through some of the old club archives. Well up in the Rolston Bar there is now a copy of the original plan that Alex Sandy Herd did back in 1907 that was then altered by Dr Alister MacKenzie a few years later. I find this sort of thing very interesting and I hope you all take time to go and have a look at it too.
