Pros news

So how many of you managed to stay up and watch The Masters?

What a great tournament it was this year especially with the two Europeans moving away from the field on Sunday. The expected charge of Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth never got going and although Thomas Pieters tied second place for a short while on the back 9 there was only really Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia involved in the tournament.

I must admit that when Garcia hit it into trouble on 13 I thought it would be plain sailing for Rose. How wrong a putt for a par from 12 foot can prove so crucial and so it proved. With Garcia hitting some superb iron shots from the 14th but with Rose responding as well it all came down to the 72nd hole with the players tied. Rose had a putt just slip by the edge of the hole for birdie which left Garcia with a very tricky 8 foot putt that also just missed, into a playoff.

With Rose struggling all the way up the first extra hole and making 5 the scene was set for Garcia and he slotted his birdie putt in. Personally I was so happy for him as he really does deserve to have multiple major wins and now he has broken through this could lead to a few more following in the near future. A great final round and a fantastic win!

Stret's New Shoes

I have just got myself probably the strangest but most comfortable golf shoes ever. The Puma Ignite Sport are just like wearing slippers, but do give you enough support to play in. They don't feel like they should be, but they are waterproof for a year too. Have a look next time you are in.

Will We See an Andreson In a Green Jacket Soon?

On Tuesday I played with the three Anderson boys, Albert, Harry and Alfie. This was a voucher bought for them as a Christmas present. We had a great game and it was fantastic to see how they are all progressing. One thing that really struck me was little Alfie and his course management, that a lot of golfers could learn from. If he can't hit his tee shot over the water or the mounds, he just plays short or hits to the side. No moaning about it he just gets on with it. The 15th was the best when he set up and hit it right of the mounds. I asked him why and his reply was simply;

"I can't get over so I hit it to the side. Why would I want to be stuck on those mounds? I can then smack it down instead of taking loads of shots on the mound"

It did make me smile. We had a bit of a game between us with Albert and Harry taking on Alfie and myself. We took the early lead but when we were 3 down with 3 to play I changed the rules and in the end the game finished all square! Great game it was too. They will all become great golfers and if you get chance to play with them I think you would be well impressed.

Course news

 13th Pond

Paul Duckworth and his pond team again were busy on Monday as they had John White and his digger back again to dig the sludge out of the bottom of the 13th pond.

The sludge was taken by a dumper to a position well into the trees to the side of the 8th green.

Moving all the sludge has made a bit of a mess behind the 8th and 13th, but we do have a local rule in place to cover this.

I'm sure we will now find the quality of this pond improve.

Pics From The Course

A little different this week as I have two bad pictures for you which I really don't like to put up but I think you should all see. First is a divot that was taken out of the 13th green sometime on Sunday and the second is of trolley wheeling going straight across the 7th tee. Only members were on the course on both occasions.

Come on, it is your course please look after it.

More Holes In One!

Malcolm Train was not the only one to make a hole in one this week. Rob Bulmer whilst playing on Friday had his first one ever on the 7th and then on Tuesday Carl Cunningham had his 4th hole in one on the 12th.

We are having a bit of a run at the moment. I'm starting to think it is time for me to get another!

Competition news

European Tour Fantasy League

Some big changes on the overall leader board this week after a few inspired picks but some of the league.

Quite noticeable too that a few that were struggling in the early events are now right up there.

The entry to the Hornsea League closed the weekend before the Masters with the following now playing for the money.

Stretton Wright, Dave Bissett, Paul Gibson, Pete Cane, Peter Bridges, Matthew McDonnell, Phil Hargreaves, Dougie Griebenouw, Darrell Slingsby, Dave Egerton, Paul Lockwood Snr, Jon Mitchell and Rob Osborne.

Paul Gibson is still leading the way but it's now close at the top. Well it would be if all had paid!

Matthew McDonnell is Paul's nearest challenger and he is in 5th position. I'm going backwards at the moment but there is a long way to go.

Tuesday Club

So after 2 weeks of the Tuesday Club it is good to see some new people playing.

Remember this is open to all the gents in the club and really is a great event.

Early days yet but some good scores are coming in.

Knockout Matches

Again, it is nice to see a few more games have been played but the closing date for the 1st round is fast approaching.

If you haven't got your games organised yet I suggest you do so as soon as possible.

Remember no extensions will be given.

Competition results

Masters Par 3 Competition

So on Sunday we held our 2nd Master Par 3 competition. What great fun it was too in near perfect conditions. Gareth had found some interesting tee positions which gave a tough but fair test for all that played. With each hole being a par 3 the decided handicap was 50%.

As the cards began to come in there was plenty of scores around par but no one really going much lower. One main highlight was last year's champion Malcolm Train achieving his 4th hole in one at the 17th, unfortunately this wasn't enough for him to defend his title. As more and more people came in Nathan Wright had a brilliant gross of level par with his handicap off scoring 51.5.

This would then go on to be smashed by Mark Barrass who claimed the prize of Hornsea Par 3 Champion and the coveted jacket with a fantastic nett score of 5 under, 49. Only problem is he is going to need to grow in to the jacket!
