Stretton's News

Well as I start this week's newsletter on Saturday afternoon it must be about 100 degrees in the shop! I bet there will be a few golfers suffering with sun burn. Remember to get well covered in sun cream and for those like me that are a little thin on top, make sure you wear a hat too. Both of which are available from the shop!

I guess I should mention also that by the time I was finishing the newsletter on Tuesday, the weather had changed a little!

Talking of the shop, as well as all the ladies clothing being reduced, the gents should keep an eye on the ever changing sale rail, which is outside the shop, weather permitting, which has some great bargains on offer.

Some of you might have noticed our poorly dog that we have had to bring to work recently. She really is feeling sorry for herself after having a small growth removed from above her eye. Can't be pleasant in the warm weather having to wear a big plastic lampshade. Only another 5 days to go!

US Open

So another first time Major winner in Brooks Koepka. What a round he put together on Sunday when all around were struggling. I must also mention Justin Thomas and his amazing score of 63 on Saturday. What a shot he played to the last hole to set up his eagle 3. Funny though, as he like us found the following day very different though!

I'm now looking forward to going across to Birkdale with Nathan in just over a month to spend a day at The Open on the Thursday. Are any of you making the trip?

Open Am Am

Hornsea are holding an Open Am Am on July 5th and we have a few spare times if any of you are interested. There is no age restriction in this event and the cost is £80 per team. Please contact the Pro Shop for more details or to enter a team.

Entry Sheets

As mentioned before there are a number of entry sheets up in the Rolston Bar at the moment for various competitions to enter.

- Captains Weekend - 1st & 2nd July.
- Jack Major, Norman Seaton, John Wood Chalices - 15th July.
- Silver Tee 4 clubs and a putter challenge - 17th July.
- The "Open" Am Am - 23rd July.

Exchange Days

The sheets are now up for two of the gents exchanges to Scarborough North Cliff and Easingwold and are starting to fill up. The sheets are up in the clubhouse to enter your names and again offer great value as they include coffee and bacon sandwich on arrival, 18 holes of golf, a two course meal and prizes.

Colin And Peter Busy Again

Well they are at it again. This time they are improving the facilities down at the greens sheds. To start with they are building Gareth a new office which will then leave room on the inside of the sheds to make a better kitchen area, toilet and drying room. They really do a great job and save the club a lot of money. Well done again Colin and Peter.

Bliss Prices

As mentioned last week 'Bliss' is now open. Please find below Debbie's list of what she does and her prices. Click here to go to her Facebook page with all her information and pricing.

Competition news

Knockout Matches

It really does amaze me how many of you leave it until the last few days when you have had roughly 5 weeks to get your matches organised!

Invitation Day

It is very disappointing but due to the lack of support for the Gents Invitation Day this event has had to be cancelled. It really could not go ahead with such a poor entry. Hard to believe not many years ago it filled two days with over 50 pairs playing each day. The normal time sheet for this Sunday is now open if any members want to book.

East Riding Seniors Championship

As is the case every year, the Senior Championship was a close run affair for the title and with only the last 3 ball on the course there seemed to be a possibility of a play-off again! There were 2 x 77's in the clubhouse; one was Keith Williamson from Hessle GC, who took a double bogey 7 down the last and the other was Frank McGuire, an amazing score considering Frank plays off 13 handicap.

Both these scores were thought to be good in tricky conditions. However, one of the last 3 scores to come in did match the 77. This was last year's play-off winner Phil Cross from Hornsea, who had a couple of 3 putts late on in his round. In the end all 3 of the 77's were upstaged by Ian Stephenson, who shot a very steady 76. Ian was last year's runner up to Phil and he has won the title twice before. The third member of this 3 ball was the reigning Yorkshire Seniors Champion, Alan Wright, who unfortunately and inadvertently drove out of bounds on the last to score 79! This was a great effort from Phil who has been struggling with his wrist after breaking it badly during the winter. Better luck next year.

European Tour Fantasy League

So yet again my team all struggled this week in the US Open, but by the looks nearly everyone in the Hornsea league did also with only Shaun Prout and Chris Stephenson scoring reasonable points. I only had Sergio Garcia that made the cut! No real changes at the top of the leader board then with Mr Gibson still going well and leading the way.

I must also mention Redford Osborne, who got his handicap down with a great score of 120/53/67. This pulled him 3 full shots. It was great on Sunday to see so many of the higher handicaps and newer golfers playing. Once they get to 28 handicap they then play off the white tees and compete for the main prizes.

Gents Scratch League

Well this week based off the scores of the matches, the teams must have really wanted to stamp their authority on the leagues. In the first team Luke Robinson won 7&6, new addition Matty Raybould won 3&2, Leigh Gawley won 9&7 and Rees Brown fought back from being 4 down to get a half, meaning the first team won 3 ½ - ½.

Then for the second team Sam Middleton won 2&1, Andy Fox 7&6, Nathan Wright 6&4 and Jon Bickerdike 8&7. Some exceptional performances from the boys means both teams remain top of both their respective leagues. No game for second team this week, but the first team are playing a rearranged fixture at Hull on Friday night so we wish the boys good luck.

Ladies news

Ladies Over 50's Am Am

The ladies over 50's Am Am took place on Tuesday 13th June. It was a good turn out with 30 teams entering. Comments about the course and catering were extremely positive. The winning team from Forest Park scored an excellent 81 with a team from Hornsea made up of Jan Elder, Angie Hinch, Sue Howell and Lucy Atkin coming in second with 74 Pts.

As far as twos go only 3 out of the large field managed it. I will at this point mention Paul Gibson and his lessons ladies! Thanks go to all who helped make the day a success, with a special mention to Malcolm Hester who worked all day on the scoring system and as a starter.

Ladies Team News

The ladies scratch team recorded their first win in the YLGA Division 1 last Thursday. The team overcame a strong team from Fulford securing the 4-3 win, an even more impressive factor was that it was away at Fulford Golf Club, this win takes the team away from the bottom end of the table.

A Clappison, S Cane, R Atkin, L Johns, N Salzl, W Lockwood and C Barker represented Hornsea; with Sharon, Rosie, Nicky and Caroline winning their respective matches. The team are now looking forward to the next fixture on 26th June at home against last year's champions Huddersfield.

Thanks Wendy for these reports and really well done to all. That is a great result. Keep up the good work girls.

Ladies A team result at home against Wike Ridge was a 5- 2 win for Hornsea last Friday.

Junior news

Juniors Go From Strength To Strength

The Hornsea Junior team yet again gave a great performance on Monday evening, beating the Beverley Juniors 2½ - ½ with a couple of great wins by Matt McDonnell 9&7 and Harry Anderson 7&6. Will Marshall also did very well to get a half as he was 3 down after 11. Our Juniors are really going from strength to strength.

Course news

Greens

Bit of bad news really in that despite having a trap set, it looks like the Mink is back. Not a nice picture, but Gareth found this fish head on the 11th earlier in the week I'm afraid.

The greens this week have been sprayed with a liquid feed and iron. They have also been verti-cut to help thin the surface. It is still all hands on deck trying to keep on top of all the cutting.

Pics From The Course

No Captain's Challenge this week, but I did play on Sunday afternoon in the heat. Playing the 17th I must say I have never seen anyone as wide as what Owen Meggison was!

Hard to believe, but from this position he did manage to half the hole. I was not impressed!

Great one of me whilst I was out practicing last Thursday evening. It was a lovely evening then out of nowhere this rainbow appeared. Luckily for me no rain came down as I had over 100 balls to pick up!

Not really pictures of the course, but the warm weather has brought out some interesting outfits over the last week. I won't mention who has sent the pictures in, but I'm sure revenge will be taken at some time!
