Stretton's News

I'm starting this week with a bit of news about our dog Biscuit. Last week if you remember I had put a picture of her after her operation wearing a lampshade and having to stay in the shop with us for a few days. Well thankfully she is on the mend and is a lot happier now.

Not that you would think so in this picture!

As I started this week's newsletter on Saturday afternoon I was wishing Paul Gibson good luck as he was just about to set off to the other side of the country to start a short bike ride.

Morecambe to Bridlington with his father in law. Roughly 170 miles in three days. I'm sure Paul will tell you more about it when he gets chance to do his blog. Well done though pal. Great achievement for someone that only goes out on his bike occasionally when he gets chance.

Click here for more information on his route.

Some of you might remember about a year ago me trying a trick shot and posting the video on here. Quite funny it was too. Well I was sent this video the other day to see if I could have a go. Well luckily my first attempt wasn't recorded as I nearly broke my leg! I won't be trying again…

Click here to watch the trick shot.

If any of you would like to try, please record your efforts and send them to me. If anyone manages it I shall post the video next week!

No funny picture of me this week. Just one of me posing with my clubs for a new look to the newsletter which will be coming soon.

Exchange Days

The sheet for the gents' exchange to Scarborough North Cliff is now nearly full but there are still quite a few places left for the Captain's exchange to Easingwold. If you have put your names down can you please remember to pay in the shop as soon as possible.

The sheets are up in the clubhouse to enter your names and again offer great value as they include coffee and bacon sandwich on arrival, 18 holes of golf, a two course meal and prizes.

Pitch Marks

Again, unfortunately pitch marks are a problem at Hornsea with lots of people complaining about marks not been repaired. I did come across this video which shows people really well how a pitch mark should and should not be repaired.

For those that do repair yours and others thank you.

Click here to watch the video.

Open Am Am

Hornsea are holding an Open Am Am next Wednesday, July 5th, and we have a few spare times if any of you are interested. There is no age restriction in this event and the cost is £80 per team. Please contact the Pro Shop for more details or to enter a team on 01964 534989.

Entry Sheets

As mentioned before there are a number of entry sheets up in the Rolston Bar at the moment for various competitions to enter. Some of these yet again are poorly supported. Please take a look next time you are in the Rolston Bar.

Invitation Day

After the disappointment of having to cancel Invitation Day this year due to hardly any members putting their names down, when the Golf Committee met last week it was decided that next year it will go back to a Saturday and a time slot of 2 to 3 hours will be given for those that would like to bring a guest. I can't give you a date yet as we still have to confirm quite a few other fixtures.

Ponds

Thanks again go too Keith Swann who put 18 more fish into the 11th pond last Tuesday. I do know other members have said they might be taking some too, so please if you have any take some fish food with you next time you play and see if you can spot any.

Yet More Holes In One At Hornsea!

This is now becoming almost a weekly event. Alan Johnson was the first member to achieve a hole in one whilst playing on Saturday on the 17th hole. Playing later in the day a visitor also achieved a one on the 7th hole.

Then along came Tuesday and the ladies turn. Doreen McCaughey made a one on the 12th and then shortly after Jane Grazier made her one on the 17th.

I'm starting to think we must be on for some sort of record. Come on Colin Smith. It must be your turn next.

Revised War Time Rules

Pat Slaven has recently been away at his daughters and whilst there he picked up a local magazine. In that magazine there was an article about Mid Herts Golf Club with some revised war time rules for playing golf. Some interesting ones there is too!

Clubhouse Events

Don't forget this Saturday is the Captains BBQ and entertainment in the clubhouse in the evening. Just £10 per ticket. On 14th July there is going to be a fish night. Please book your tickets with Julie. There is also going to be another Mexican night on 5th August. Again book your tickets with Julie. I'm sure these will be very popular make sure you book and pay for your tickets to avoid disappointment.

Competition news

East Riding Open

Leigh Gawley had a great result in the East Riding Open last week at Driffield finishing tied first with Matty Raybould, who is now also a member of Hornsea, but his home club is Bridlington. Leigh had scores of 71, 73 whilst Mathew had 74, 70. With the scores tied it was down to a two hole playoff. A good crowd gathered to support and encourage both players. The two hole playoff was played on holes 1 and 18, some would consider these to be two of the hardest holes at Driffield.

Matty started off by hitting his driver very close to the out of bounds on the left and Leigh then played somewhat cautiously up the right. Matty would be left with no other option but to chip out sideways. This left him with 256 yards and he hit a 2 iron to within 20 foot of the hole. Leigh would then struggle from where he was and ended up taking a 6. Matty managed to hole his putt for what some would class as a miracle 4. So with Matty having a 2 shot lead he played the hole safely and ended up taking a 5.

This though left Leigh with a chance to take it to sudden death. 15 foot with quite a bit of turn, but still a chance of making a 3, unfortunately Leigh's putt didn't quite have the pace and that meant that new member Matty won the title of East Riding Open champion 2017. Well played to both!

Knockout Matches

Yet again I am giving all of you that are left in the knockouts a bit of a push to get your games organised as there are yet again lots of matches to play and time is running out. 9th July is the next cut-off date. That gives you just over a week. Remember no extensions will be given. If you can't get your games played make sure that between you both you come to some sort of arrangement that a result is put on the board. If not both will be disqualified.

Yorkshire Union 3rd Division Team Championship

So the how many of you would have fancied playing golf in the terrible weather conditions we had yesterday. Well for three of our members, Leigh Gawley, Luke Robinson and Rees Brown they had no choice as it was the Yorkshire 3rd Division Team Championship at Oakdale. They all knew as they set off that instead of having to play the usual 36 holes, that due to the ever worsening conditions it was reduced to just 9 holes.

What a performance they all produced too bringing Hornsea home in 2nd place and gaining promotion to the 2nd Division, only missing out by 1 shot from winning. I must also mention the caddies, Howard Palmer, Manny Gray and Nathan Wright; who I have been told all more than played their part in helping to keep clubs as dry as possible and our players in good spirits despite the weather.

The 2nd Division will be played at Wheatley Golf Club on July 12th. If any of you fancy going to support please have a word with Howard, our lead caddy, or myself in the shop. Please look click here for all the scores.

Gents Scratch League

The A team played away at Hull last Friday, but lost 3-1. They still remain at the top of the league though. The B team had a free week and also stay at the top of their league.

Click here to see the league tables.

European Tour Fantasy League

I was quite happy with my team's performance this week only to find out nearly everyone had picked the same team, so no real changes at the top of the overall leaderboard. Some big points up for grabs though over the next 4 weeks so that could see some changes. We must topple Paul Gibson!

Ladies news

Ladies Matches

The Ladies Scratch Team hosted the return fixture against last year's champions Huddersfield on Monday. Huddersfield arrived with an extremely strong team, however in true Hornsea spirit everyone gave their 100% effort and commitment. Although we went down 1½ to 5½, there were some very close games contested, a special mention to Angela Clappison playing a Welsh international player off +1 and only lost on the final putt of the round, a brilliant effort.

A win was secured by Rosie Atkin and half by Myra Smith. Hornsea representatives were A Clappison, S Cane N Salzl, R Atkin, L Johns, W Lockwood & Myra Smith. The team travels to Hickleton for the next fixture in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for the report again Wendy and even though you lost overall, this really is a great result against a very strong team. Love the spirit you all play in.

Now for the B team who played away at Malton on Monday. Unfortunately, the Malton team was too strong for our Hornsea girls and we lost 5-2. This was the last game of the season and the team now needs to wait to see were they have finished in the league. Thanks Patsy for keeping us all updated.

Junior news

Unlucky Boys

Unfortunately, it was a poor result for the Hornsea juniors on Monday night as they lost at home to Brough 2-1. They are still in a good position overall with a good few games still remaining. Last year Peter Mounfield organised a very successful Junior & Adult Texas Scramble. This year's date is Wednesday 26th July and if you would like to play can you please let Peter know.

Course news

Greens

Click here to to read Gareth's June Greens Report.

So yesterday was just a little damp! 47mm was recorded in the gauge. That now takes us to just over 4 inches for the month of June.

Pics From The Course

This week we have a picture from the 11th hole again, but instead of how fantastic the hole looks, it's of one of many of the tadpoles that have become frogs.

The next few are from Chris Reed and Peter Blood of a large fish in the lagoon on the 14th. Worth a look next time your passing that point. Maybe even throw in some food.

I then have a couple of members searching for their balls in not the best positions! Tom Walker right of the 11th and then our Masters Champion, Mark Barrass, a little wide on the 18th.

I also took this sneaky picture of a visitor who I guess was colour blind and in need of someone to take his shorts up a little!
