This last weekend after yet more heavy rain it showed again how lucky we are to be members and to be playing at Hornsea. Many local courses were closed or had full trolley bans in place. I must admit there were a couple of areas on our course that were a little damp but nowhere near it not being playable. Does not bode well for some clubs if they are having to close or introduce restrictions already.

Vice Captain ties the knot at last!

Last Friday Hornsea Vice Captain Rees Brown got married in a wonderful ceremony to his lovely partner Jo. Most of you will know Jo, as Rees’s taxi ride home after he plays golf! It was a fantastic day and they really had thought about everything to make it not only special for them but also a great day for all the guests.

Their wedding cake not only had a golf theme but also if you look closely had a Taylor Made bag! You might also come across some of his golf balls that he wanted people to write on. I dread to think what some people will have written but I’m sure as Rees disposes of them around the course they will make for interesting reading!

Ladies Pro Am Fulford

Last Thursday I had the pleasure of playing at Fulford with Rosie Atkin, Sue Robinson and Caroline Barker in the East Yorkshire Ladies Winter Golf Association Pro Am. Can I thank them for putting up with me as my golf was not really at its best but it was a very enjoyable day. We didn’t quite manage to get into the prizes but Paul Lockwood Jnr and his team, Wendy Lockwood, Sue Howell and Nicky Salzl managed a 4th place. Well done. How can you go to Fulford and not get a picture of the famous tree on the 17th. I know it will have grown a little but it still amazes me how Langer managed to get up the tree and play his shot from there.

Captains Challenge

On Sunday our challengers were Shaun and Steve Prout. I don’t really have much to say about this match as we were well and truly taken to the cleaners! We lost everything. Front 9, back 9 and game. Well played. In my defence I was suffering with a bad shoulder after enjoying myself at Rees Browns wedding maybe a little too much and suffered a small fall!

European Tour Fantasy League

So, for another week my team captain decided he wanted the weekend off! Luckily for me Paul Gibson along with quite a few others also picked Alex Noren so again no real change to the overall standings this week. Douglas Griebenouw topped the weekly result and for a change it was nice to see Dave Blanchard do a little better! Some big money events coming up so it could be an interesting finish to the overall leaderboard.

British Masters

It is now Nathan writing this little piece as myself, Paul Gibson and Matt McDonnell travelled up to Close House on Sunday for the final day of the British Masters. What a day it was although a long day it was more than made up for in the quality of play that we watched. We managed to see lots of shots hit by the final groups on Sunday which was fantastic to be able to get so close to the action late on in the tournament. The atmosphere on the back 9 when Rory was making a charge was brilliant. After going to The Open Championship on the first day and the last day of this I would definitely suggest going to this as you are able to get a lot closer to the action.

Tuesday Club and Rolston Bar Trophy

On Thursday I had the pleasure of sorting out the winners and helping to present all the winners in this year’s Tuesday Club and The Rolston Bar Trophy. I must mention firstly the hard work in the organising that Pat Slaven does for this event and his helpers Tony Hood and Nev Cook. This season long event always runs smoothly and has now been going for over 50 years. Well done on another great season.

This year 44 members joined in the Tuesday Club with prizes going to the top 10 players with the best average over the season with 10 scores to count. For the first year I can remember the top two places had exactly the same score and will share the Snug Putter.

EGGs Cup & The Presidents Cup

The EGGs Cup was played on 25th September the winner our colonial friend from Texas USA Mike Guidry with 36 points runner up our local friend Allan Johnson with 34 points, congratulations chaps. (pic of Ron & Mike)

The Presidents cup played on 2nd October was won by Colin Porritt with 34 points runner up Ron Wainman 33 points, the weather conditions were very trying with the wind conditions, hence the scores were low, congratulations to the winners. 

The official presentation of the seniors trophies will be in February/March 2018 at the Seniors presentation/dinner evening, dates to be arranged in due course and will be displayed in the fixtures list and on the notice board.

Jon Bickerdike Mark Hurn Series

Last year Jon ran a very successful little league between his friends that ran in conjunction with the Winter Mark Hurn Individual Stablefords that are held each Sunday through the winter. This year he is doing it again and he would like to invite anyone that is interested to take part. The cost to enter is £10 and there will be two divisions. The winners will be decided by taking the best 7 scores from all of the 22 events. If you would like to have a go but don’t know Jon don’t worry as we can collect the money in the Pro Shop and pass it on to him.

The first event is this Sunday 8th October.

Course update

Along with the day to day tasks others jobs done on the course this week have included the strimming of the mounds that are in play on the 15th and 16th, the tees have been solid tined, all greens mowers have been adjusted to cut a little higher for the winter and a fungicide has been sprayed along with some iron to the greens. This has been done as we have got a slight problem with fusarium as some of you might have noticed on some of the greens. This is due to the wet and warm weather we have been having recently.
