Stretton's News...

Last week, myself and Yvonne managed to get away for a couple of days. We stayed in a tiny little cottage (more like a shed) at Witton Le Wear which is near Durham. Very relaxing it was too even if the weather was horrible and nothing like this picture!

I hope I’m not speaking too soon but at last we have had some better drier weather. The shop is well stocked now with lots of really nice clothing for both ladies and gents. We would much rather see you all wearing it though out on the course!

Callaway Demo Day

Just a quick reminder that we have a Callaway demo day coming up on Tuesday 15th May. We still have a couple of times left if anyone wants a full fitting.

If you just want to come and have a go with all their latest equipment you can just turn up at any time.

Captains Challenge

It has been a while due to conditions and other things going on but we played a Captains Challenge match this weekend against Darrell Slingsby and Martin Rowbotham. After taking an early lead, despite the amount of shots we were giving, we found ourselves 2 up after 9 and took the front 9. The back 9 was much the same and the end result was a win for us 4&3 and we just managed to win the back 9 too. There was only 1 bit to us though as Martin holed a great putt on the 17th which earned them 3 bits. Not quite what we were after! It was a great game though and many thanks to them both for their contributions to the Captains Charity. Tour De Yorkshire

So it is not long now until the Tour De Yorkshire will be passing through Hornsea and down Hull road past the Golf Club. I did ask last week if any of you had any old bikes that could be painted and put down the hedge on the 6th hole. So far I have been given one. I’m sure many of you must have some old bikes knocking around in your sheds or garages that you no longer use. Darrell Slingsby has paint ready to go. We just need some bikes!

European Tour Fantasy Race To Dubai

Chris Grubb picked the best team this week closely followed by David Blanchard. I think the top 7 this week all had Jon Rahm as their captains which helps. Not too much change on the overall leaderboard with Simon Bodsworth still leading the way.

Monday Night Texas Scramble

Now everyone loves a Texas Scramble and we have our first one of the year on Monday 14th May. It is a 5pm shotgun start. The entry sheet is now up in the clubhouse.

3 Days And Counting

This Sunday will see Hornsea member Nicky Salzl, as mentioned in previous newsletters, run the London Marathon. On Tuesday the Hornsea ladies raised a fabulous sum of £183 for her Charity. All the Golf Club are behind you Nicky and will be cheering you on. Good luck and enjoy.

Course News

Pictures From The Course

Now I have a great one this week and it will get you all looking. This was taken by our Captain Rees Brown and is of a goldfish in the 11th pond.

Please keep a look out as it would be great to see fish back in the 11th but we are not sure what has happened to the mink which has been around for the last few years.

Not from the course but hopefully you will see them out there soon.

Our Gents Scratch League Team will look smart this year in new tops which have been paid for with what they won for winning last years 1st and 3rd Division titles.

Lets hope they can do the same this year.

This one I took whilst playing at the weekend. Isn’t it nice to see the course starting to come to life at long last after all the horrible weather.

Lets hope the sun comes out and we all have a great summer.

Green's Report

So at long last we have got a little bit of dry warm weather. Great; but this does now mean that grass is growing like mad. With quite a few areas still very wet it is making cutting difficult and for a couple of weeks until the greens staff get on top of the cutting you might find clippings a bit of a problem. All tees and most of the approaches should have been solid tined by the time you receive this newsletter and Dave is getting there with the long slow job of verti draining the same to the fairways.

These are important jobs to do that would normally have been completed months ago. Bunker banks have been cut as has most of the rough but as mentioned earlier the way the grass is growing you can hardly tell already. Conditions when I wrote this were still too wet to get the sand into all the new bunkers on 2,3 and 15 but it is improving daily so hopefully it shouldn’t be too long. And finally those that like the Whitebeams down the left hand side of the 16th will be pleased to know they were all ready to come into leaf on Tuesday. They always look fantastic when they first come out.

Mats Now In Place

On Tuesday, the mats for the range where delivered and are now in place. This now gives an area to hit balls from even when the ground is saturated like it has been recently.

The mats are from Huxley Golf and is probably as near to hitting off grass as you can get. Before anyone asks where the rubber tees are you can use normal tees on these mats. Now the area is drying out hopefully it will be tidied up and finished off before too long.

What a fantastic turn out Paul had for his girls only coaching session last Saturday. It was great to see so many enjoying themselves. If numbers continue to grow he could really do with some help from some of our ladies. Please have a word with him you are available.

A change in distance

The changes to the Rules of Golf are fast approaching with 2019 now less than nine months away, so we thought we’d take a closer look at one common rule that’s getting a makeover.

Change of procedure when taking relief
When taking a penalty drop from a lateral water hazard, one option available to you is to drop a ball outside the hazard within two club-lengths of and not nearer the hole.

Under the new rule (17.1c), from 2019 you’ll need to use the longest club in your bag (other than a putter) to measure one club-length or two club-lengths depending on the situation.

The other alteration comes when dropping the golf ball. At present, you must drop your ball from shoulder height when taking relief, but this will change to knee height from 2019.

Are you a V or X?

When it comes to golf balls, there are two questions we hear on an almost daily basis, both concerning Titleist’s Pro V1 and Pro V1x. So we thought we’d take this opportunity to let you all know the answers...

What’s the difference between V and X?
Both of the Pro V1 balls are designed to provide long and short game performance, but there are subtle differences from tee-to-green.

While both feel soft, the Pro V1 is a little softer and has a penetrating flight that delivers more roll from the tee, whereas the Pro V1x feels firmer and flies higher.

Which one should I play?
If it’s a straight shootout between the Pro V1 and Pro V1x, then you’re going to benefit from distance, control and feel either way.

Both models are used on tour by players such as Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, but it really comes down to your personal feel preference and which characteristics suit your game, which we can discuss during a ball fitting.
