Stretton's News...

So, the golf season now really is in full swing and as you receive this newsletter I shall be in Harrogate playing in the Captains away trip. On Tuesday I gave all my clubs a good clean and washed all the grips. Funny how we only do this for special occasions! When was the last time you all gave your clubs a clean? It really is something you should do at least once a week. Do it tonight whilst you are thinking about it and check that all your grips are in good order too.

All ladies clothing is currently on offer with 20% OFF Don’t miss out if you have had your eye on something. When it’s gone we won’t be able to get the same again.

For those that struggle to get out of bunkers here is an easy way to do it that I saw earlier this week.

Captains Weekend

So, it is not long now until Captains Weekend. The sheets are up in the Rolston Bar and below you will find a note from your Captain Rees and a programme of events he has planned.

A Message From Your Gents Captain

It has been a while since I last wrote a message so here I am catching up to let you all know what has been going on. The golf season is in full momentum and has certainly swung me away with its follow through, golf, golf, golf. I have never played so much golf in my life before, but for certain I am enjoying every moment of it.

Back in February I donated a golf bag to my Captains Raffle, which proved successful. The draw was made on the evening of 14th May at the same time as the prize presentation for the Shot Gun Texas Scramble. The lucky winner was Neil Jordan, Neil then very kindly donated it back to me to auction in the room. Thank you to Alan Scarlet who placed the winning bid, I would like to thank all those who purchased a raffle ticket.

This month for my Captains Raffle I have a Callaway Rogue Driver worth £429. I intend to draw this at my Captains Weekend in July, again all profits will go to my charity. Raffle tickets can be purchased from the Pro Shop at £5 a ticket.

In May, I hosted a Hull and District Golf Captains Association match against Harrogate Captains Association. Hosted my Captains Invitational, where all the Hull and District Captains and Vice Captains of 2018 attend. Hosted a Past Captains am-am, where our Past Captains invite a team of Past Captains from the Hull and District of their Captaincy year. Now you can see where this is going, that’s a lot of Captains to be hosting ha, ha.

This weekend I have also hosted and played for the East Riding Union Team against Teeside Union. Now that has to be an accolade that quite possibly has not been achieved before, but it gets better. A Hornsea Captain playing for his County at Hornsea who brought home the winning point for the East Riding in the afternoon singles, after been two down with five to play, this didn’t look possible. But after playing the last five holes in three under par I managed to win one up and seal the victory for the East riding. The final score was a resounding victory to the East Riding 27-9.

For all the hosting and meeting many a person, most of which are important people within the golfing community, players that have represented their Unions and Counties, coming from different Counties far wide. One thing that stands out that I want to tell you the members of Hornsea the number of compliments I have received have been phenomenal, here are just a few.

Just a few of the many complimentary comments I have received in the last month, this is what makes me proud to be Captain of Hornsea Golf Club. A massive thank you to all those involved at Hornsea Golf Club making it the best I have ever known it since I have been a member.

I am now looking forward to Captains away trip 14th 15th June for those on board, Captains weekend 7th 8th July, please see attached the programme of events, Casino Night 7th July, 200 Holes 29th June and Invitational Day 30th June.

Yorkshire Match

This coming Saturday Hornsea are hosting a County match between Yorkshire and Durham. This is your chance to come and watch some fantastic quality golf for nothing. I am sure you would all learn a thing or two. They play foursomes in the morning with the first groups going at 9.30am. In the afternoon the singles matches start from 1.30pm. The best place to watch is to pick a game and follow them all the way around or maybe go up to the tower and wander around up there. All the golfers will be scratch handicap or better.

Scarborough North Cliff Exchange

The sheet for the gents Scarborough exchange will be going up next week. I am still waiting for the food price to be confirmed but it is looking like £25 for coffee and bacon sandwich, 18 holes of golf, a two-course roast dinner and prizes. The date for your diaries is Sunday 29th July.

East Riding Union Match

As Rees has just mentioned in his report Hornsea hosted the East Riding Union match against Teesside last Sunday. What a great result it was for the East Riding too with a 27 to 9 victory. It was nice to watch them all playing some very good golf but more satisfying to me was to listen to all the very complimentary comments about the course from all the players.

East Riding Union v Teesside Union

Having won their opening match in convincing style, the Senior Team followed up with a 27:9 victory over the Teesside Union at Hornsea on 10th June. The weather conditions were ideal, with just a light breeze in the morning, which strengthened slightly in the afternoon.

All but one of the morning foursomes were won or lost out in the country, with the Hornsea pairing of Luke Robinson & Matty Raybould and the Ganton pairing of Steve Pybus & Lewis Nicholls both winning by 5&4. The untried combination of Rich Webster & Lewis Hunt (Bridlington & Burstwick) went one better, closing out their match 6&5 whilst the Hessle pairing of Andy Woodhead & Phil Scott triumphed by 3&2. The second all Hornsea pair of Leigh Gawley and Rees Brown, however, succumbed by a margin of 4&3.

The remaining match was an altogether tighter contest and despite building a three hole advantage after seven holes, Andy Lockwood and Nick Raybould (Hessle & Hornsea) were pegged back to stand one up on the 18th. That hole was to prove very profitable for the East Riding as, not only did the foursome pair halve it for a one up victory but of the six singles matches which went the full distance in the afternoon, the results for the home team on the hole were won four, halved one, lost one. It was this strength at the death, which turned the victory into a convincing margin.

In the singles, the second match featured two Yorkshire players as Matty Raybould took on his County colleague, Michael Hay (Middlesborough). The game was evenly balanced until Raybould lost a ball at the 13th and Hay managed to hold on to his advantage to win the match 3&2. Andy Lockwood and Nick Raybould both won their matches with holes to spare to put East Riding on the verge of victory but fittingly, it fell to Rees Brown, the current Captain of the host club to secure the winning points with a spectacular finish of 3,4,3,3.

Lewis Nicholls and the President, Andy Lockwood won their matches on the 16th whilst there were last green wins for Luke Robinson, Leigh Gawley and Lewis Hunt with Rich Webster securing the only half of the day.

With a 10:2 margin in the foursomes and a 17:7 advantage in the singles, the final result was East Riding 27, Teesside 9.

Scratch League

It was two more good results for Hornsea last week with both teams winning. They are on a roll again this year. Keep it up boys.

Report From your Seniors Secretary

Just thought I would give you a report on the Seniors Section.

Well after a very damp start we got under way a little bit later than anticipated. but Prior to that we had our annual Presentation and dinner which was well attended. Congratulations to the respective Prize winners.

As stated a damp start it was, with the first two fixtures cancelled but we managed to get a match at Hainsworth played. The next one at Filey had to be cancelled also. A week later and the day before our Easter Open I met with Nathan and Gareth to discuss the course conditions. It was obvious after a lengthy discussion that we would have to cancel the open. So, I started at 10am that day contacting all the entrants to give them the bad news. Thankfully everybody was sympathetic and understanding.

So now we are into our fixtures and things are going along well. So far, we have played nine matches with results being w4 D2 L3. On some games we have played with a few players missing. I myself played at Hainsworth against two guys and took them to the 17th and lost it there but not to worry.

Well that’s about all there is but we could do with a few more joining the section. So, come on guys join us and play other course and have a good day out.

Hole in One For Seniors Captain

Many congratulations to Seniors Captain Peter Bridges who made a hole in one at Hessle on Monday whilst playing in their Over 60’s Am Am. Well done Peter.

European Tour Fantasy Race To Dubai

Interesting event last week with all players having to play quickly to avoid time penalties. With this in mind, the team I went for were all fairly quick players. Not that it helped my team as it was an average week for me yet again! It was Dave Prescott this week though that came out on top in what was a fairly low scoring week for everyone. Mike Smith continues to lead overall but all could change this week with big points at stake with it been The U.S Open.

Talking U.S Open, I thought this was an interesting picture showing some of the worlds top golfers and how different their positions are at the top of their backswings. Funny how lots of people worry about going back when it is the position at impact that makes the difference.

No game this week but Hornsea are looking good.

June Medal inc Round 2 Centenary Gold Medal 09/06/2018

Jon Mitchell won Division one going out in 39 coming back in 38 with four birdies and six pars beating Mick France by three shots. Allan Scarlett won Division two going out in 43 coming back in 41 with eight pars beating Christopher Stephenson in a card play-off. Matthew Arnold won Division three going out in 43 coming back in 45 with nine pars beating Keith Marshall by two shots. Well done Jon. Single figure handicap for the first time.

Hazel France won Division one going out in 48 coming back in 41 with one birdie and six pars beating Sharon Cane by five shots. Sarah Ahearne won Division two going out in 52 coming back in 55 with one par beating Jennifer Guidry by four shots.

Course News

Pictures from The Course

I have a few interesting ones this week. The first one is Rees Brown deep in the gorse on the 10th. I must admit though he was looking for my ball!

I have Rees again in this one playing his 2nd shot to the 11th hole after trying to drive the green and finishing slightly off line. For those wondering his chip finished in the water!

I now have Leigh Gawley who on Sunday playing for the East Riding didn’t hit the best tee shot off the 13th and found himself somehow behind the lady’s tee. I must add he did win his game though.

We now have David Prescott who found himself playing his 3rd shot to the 15th hole from near the gents 4th winter tee. Now that is a long way off line!

Finally, I have a quick video of Ashley Dexter who I know does get a little bit of stick at times on my newsletter. We are on the 11th again were he made a crazy par-4. After in his own words a very average tee shot followed by a shanked 2nd shot he found himself in a quite tricky position with his only option a bump and run over the bridge. This he played like Seve and a tap in par followed. Well done Ash and great imagination.

Greens Report

All those that have played this week might have noticed a slight increase in the speed of the greens as the height of cut has been lowered a little. Many comments from visitors this week have said they are the best greens they have putted on all year. Unfortunately for one Hornsea member he must have disagreed as on Sunday morning this divot which had been taken out of the 10th green on Saturday was found by the greens staff.

Does anyone know anything about this incident? This is the fourth divot to be taken out of the greens in just a couple of months. There really is no need for it.

I also had a few comments last week about why the dyke banks are left such a mess after they have been cleaned out. This it to actually let all the wildlife find its way back into the water. By now they look fine again.

Finally A Quick Joke For You All That Made Me Smile

Tiger Woods and Stevie Wonder are in a bar.

Tiger turns to Stevie and says, "How's the singing career going?

Stevie replies, "Not too bad. How's the golf?"

Woods replies, "Not too bad. I've had some problems with my swing but I think I've got that right now."

Stevie: "I always find that when my swing goes wrong, I need to stop playing for a while and not think about it. Then the next time I play, it seems to be all right."

Surprised, Tiger says, "You play GOLF?!!"

Stevie: "Yes, I've been playing for years."

Tiger: "But -- you're blind! How can you play golf if you can't see?"

Stevie: "Well, I get my caddie to stand in the middle of the fairway and call to me. I listen for the sound of his voice and play the ball towards him. Then, when I get to where the ball lands, the caddie moves to the green or farther down the fairway and again I play the ball towards his voice."

"But, how do you putt?" asks Tiger.

"Well", says Stevie, "I get my caddie to lean down in front of the hole and call to me with his head on the ground and I just play the ball towards his voice."

Tiger: "What's your handicap?"

Stevie: "Well, actually -- I'm a scratch golfer."

Woods: incredulous - says to Stevie, "We've got to play a round sometime."

Stevie: "Well, people don't take me seriously so I only play for money. And I never play for less than $10,000 a hole. Is that a problem?"

Woods thinks about it and says, "I can afford that. OK - I'm game for that. $10,000 a hole is fine with me. When would you like to play?"

Stevie: "You pick a night."
