Welcome to this week's newsletter with all the latest news from Hornsea Golf Club.
Enjoy the read. |
Stretton's News On Monday, Yvonne and myself popped down to Hinkley in Leicestershire to visit my niece who recently had a baby boy. I had to make sure I took him a small golf club, so he can start having a go as soon as he is able to. Maybe at four weeks old, I’m pushing it a little! It must have gone down well though as I received this nice text from my niece. |
Last Thursday, I was invited by Rosie Atkin, Sue Robinson and Caroline Barker to play in the East Yorkshire Ladies Pro-Am Easingwold Golf Club. What an enjoyable day it was too. Well it was for us as we only really had a bit of rain for the last few holes, unlike some who had to endure heavy rain for most of their rounds. The early start time was definitely worth getting up early for! Team wise we finished in 6th place, but with the same score as the 3rd place team, we missed out on the last 9. Only 2 shots adrift from winning it. Looking back as golfers always do I’m sure with a bit of luck we could have easily been 6 or 7 better. Never mind it was a great day and thank you girls for inviting me. |
I must mention Tiger Woods and the Ryder Cup. Firstly, for all those that had written Tiger Woods off, I guess last Sunday he proved a lot of people wrong. Some fantastic golf and despite what some might think he really is good for golf. That atmosphere as he came down the last was unbelievable. Maybe, just maybe he might have some more Major victories in him. |
|
Tomorrow also sees the start of the Ryder Cup. I do think the American’s have a very strong side but in matchplay anything can happen. It would be great to see Ian Poulter again starting a European charge. I think it will be a great weekend and should be good for golf. Who do you think will come out on top? Team Europe or Team USA. I've printed this out for Yvonne, but I have not shown her yet - are any of you brave enough to do the same? |
Preferred Lies Preferred Lies have been authorised by England Golf for the period 1st October 2018 until 30th April 2019 and they have sent the following email. Please ensure all your members are aware of the correct local rule prior to play and inform all members when the Local Rules are lifted (to prevent any breaches during play). Please see below the 'Winter Rules' which are approved by CONGU for use in qualifying competition: Through the green, a ball that is embedded may be lifted, cleaned and dropped, without penalty, as near as possible to the spot where it lay but not nearer the hole. The ball when dropped must first strike a part of the course through the green. (Appendix 1 Part A 3a of the Rules of Golf) A ball lying on a closely-mown area through the green may be lifted without penalty and cleaned. Before lifting the ball, the player must mark its position. Having lifted the ball, he must place it on a spot within six inches of and not nearer the hole than where it originally lay, that is not in a hazard and not on a putting green. (Appendix 1 Part A 3b of the Rules of Golf) |
|
To comply with the new Rules of Golf, as of 1st January 2019, a change to the new local rule wording will be required. This will be available in due course. Remember this starts from the 1st October. Next Monday. |
Junior Fundraising Am Am The start sheet for this is slowly filling up but it would be nice to see a few more supporting our Juniors. Remember this is open to members and non-members. Click here to see tee sheet. |

Sunday Winter League So with only 3 pairs showing interest and putting their names down, this unfortunately will not be happening this year. I really did think we would have been able to get 24+ pairs and help to make Sunday morning winter golf busy again and give members chance to play and meet other people. |
Gents Hull and District Winter Alliance
Last Thursday, Springhead Park played host to the 3rd Hull & District Association Winter Alliance of the year. A little like the Pro-Am mentioned earlier, an early start time was definitely an advantage as the weather really did turn nasty in Hull from about 2pm with heavy rain making conditions nearly impossible. Hornsea’s best score was a 61 from Nathan Wright and Sam Bodsworth. This still wasn’t good enough to win though with a pair from Hull managing a 59! That is looking like the score you need these days to win! Click here to view results and leaderboard.

Gents East Riding Alliance Yesterday was the first Gents East Riding Winter Alliance of the season and was held at Beverley Golf Club. I shall be reporting on how we got on in next week’s newsletter. |
European Tour Fantasy Race To Dubai
It was a poor week for everyone this week with us all in the league struggling. Simon Bodsworth did lead this week’s standings but the scoring from us all has made no real difference to the overall standings with David Maxey still leading the way. |
Darren’s Marathon Challenge Many of you will know Hornsea member Darren Reeve. Well in a few weeks, Darren and his girlfriend Jackie Kirman will be running in the York marathon and it would be great to you could sponsor them. This is their story. Our Yorkshire Marathon Challenge 2018
Here goes...Some of you may or may not know Darren and I have entered our 1st Marathon in October and probably last!
This is our biggest challenge to date but holds an even bigger place in our hearts as we are doing it in memory of Brett Scott, a fine young man who had a special place in so many people’s lives. I had the pleasure of first meeting Brett when he was just 12 weeks old whilst fostering and the honour of watching him grow with his amazing adoptive family! Brett wasn’t with his forever family very long when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour and endured years of treatment before finally being told it was terminal. They all remained strong and put up a tough fight. |
This fantastic charity gave Brett an opportunity to take a break from his illness and took him to Lapland to visit Santa. A trip Brett thoroughly enjoyed and the family now treasure the precious memories made. Sadly, the unique, funny, beautiful, brave Brett Scott lost his brave battle on 18th April 2018 aged 11 years old. This is for you Brett we hope we can do you proud and raise some money in your memory. Thank you to all our family and friends in advance for your support.
Love Jackie and Darren xx

Jack Maxey Defends His Title Hornsea Golf Club's Jack Maxey emerged victorious at Hull Golf Club on Sunday 23rd September after winning his final in the East Riding Junior Matchplay tournament. Unfortunately, George Davies injured his arm the day before playing golf at Ganton and had to withdraw, thus allowing Jack Maxey a walk over to the final. The other semi was between Charlie Milner and Tom Duck with a steady start for both players over the first couple of holes, before Charlie took command of the game winning 4 holes to the turn. Unfortunately, Tom could not produce a comeback and Charlie was through to the final against Jack. |
|
The final was similar with Jack taking control from the first with a birdie start to go 1up. By hole 8, Jack was 3up, but a birdie on 9 and a par on 11 from Charlie pulled the game back to 1up. Jack steadily moved to 3up winning on 16, 3&2 and retaining the trophy for another year. The match was played in the true spirit of the game and it was a delight to watch. My thanks to all players who have taken part and congratulations to Jack who has had a tremendous year! |
Pictures From The Course No pictures from Hornsea but I did like these that Adrian Bird sent me of Neil Jordan whilst away on a boy’s golfing trip to Liverpool. Storm Ali made conditions slightly difficult whilst playing at West Lancs and blew poor Neil’s trolley into a bunker. The wind did blow so strong that apparently was even snapping the flag sticks! I think I’d have stayed in that bunker Neil! |

Greens As we near the end of the month, temperatures are steadily falling (some frosts) and consequently growth is slowing. Some areas of the course are experiencing thinning of the sward particularly the fairways from the heat stress of the summer. We are going to try and reinvigorate them by using a spring tine rake. This is dragged across the fairways and the teeth pull at the surface removing dead organic matter. This in turn will encourage fresh new growth. Once the dead material is removed the fairways will receive an application of liquid feed and selective weed killer. All ditches have been flailed and an 8-ton digger was hired to clean out all the ditch bases. With the digger on site, the opportunity was taken to remove the gorse in front of the gents 3rd tee to improve visibility. Several Sycamore trees were removed to open up the area further, also removed the Dogwoods to the left of the 2nd green, all as agreed previously. This non-indigenous species had become too big and was removed to improve light and air movement around the green. These areas have since been prepared and seeded, please avoid them to give the best possible chance of recovery. We will be continuing to flail hedgerows, it has been out of action for a week as we were awaiting delivery of a spare part. Areas of brash will also be cut back, brambles, long grass etc. The greens have been sprayed with a winter hardener package of iron, potassium, calcium and phosphates. This will help prepare the plants for the winter months, another application will be made in a months’ time. I met with representatives of the Environment Agency (fisheries/ponds) to discuss a possible action plan for our ponds. It was stated that they require deweeding, as there is a lot of Canadian pond weed / lilies etc. The best way to remove them is with a digger. It was also recommended that they are left for a period (over the winter) following excavation to allow the pond basin to settle. However they did state that if it is the intention to restock with fish to be aware of predators that are in the vicinity (otters, mink and herons). Once the ponds have been filled with water, it is advisable to use a dye to reduce sunlight entering the water and encouraging weed growth. A monthly application starting in February would cost around £300 per season for the 8th pond. September rainfall 55mm Gareth Williams, Course Director

Sam Bodsworth Sam Bodsworth has given notice from his position as Steward at Hornsea Golf Club, and will be leaving us on Monday 29th October 2018.
We thank Sam for his time here at the club and we wish him every success in their next endeavour. The Board of Directors will now investigate new options for the catering at Hornsea Golf Club and will inform the members once the position has been filled. Rosie Atkin Chair

New irons to improve your game |
Buying a set of clubs is exciting, but can be a tricky decision - you might love the look of the short irons, but feel a bit daunted by the longer clubs further up the set. However, you can always mix and match your clubs so that your long irons are more forgiving and your short irons are more workable, allowing you to strike approach shots from any distance with confidence. |
Mix & match with PING Why not try combining the long irons of PING's G700 series with the short irons of the G400? The G700 contains low and deep weighting, which gives you higher launch and more forgiveness - ideal for your long irons. Combine this with the G400, which has a hydropearl chrome finish to help maintain the launch and spin rates of your short irons in all conditions, and you'll be feeling confident through the whole bag. Could mixing sets be the answer you've been looking for? |
