Stretton's News I’m starting this week with a few pictures of me in action that Dave Goundry kindly took and sent me on Sunday as he followed us for the morning whilst playing in the Junior Am Am. Great pictures, so thank you, Dave. |
I did also like this one of Leigh Gawley with what really does look like a look of Seve to it. |
Paul was celebrating his wedding anniversary on Saturday, so I gave the Junior lesson. What a pleasure it was too, to spend the morning with such a fantastic bunch of kids. It was also great not only to watch them hitting balls but also their attitude towards learning. On a couple of occasions, I also tested them by shouting “Fore” and all of them hit the deck instantly covering their heads. It was fantastic to see. I wish in fact I had taken a video. Sorry though to the three ball on the 17th tee that all also took evasive action! Here are just a few pictures and shows how fantastic some of them swing a club. |
So, with the weather forecast saying it is going to be turning much colder over the weekend, we have everything in the shop to help you keep warm. Bobble hats, snoods, winter mittens, hand warmers and all sorts of warm clothing all to help you stay warm on the course. Why not pop in and see our great selection. |
Captains Challenge Big game coming up this Sunday as myself and Rees take on The Prout brothers Shaun and Steve. The banter started last Sunday and has continued through the week, so I’m sure it is going to be an interesting match. They have no chance though and I predict an easy 6&5 win for us! If you have just watched the video Adrian Bird sent me I have a feeling they could both be doing similar things by the time we are halfway round!

Night Golf Can all those that have put down to play, please can you make you pay as soon as possible in the Pro shop. Times will be given this week, so keep your eye on the board in the Rolston Bar. We really could do with about ten more entries too. |
Junior Fundraising Am Am Many thanks to all that played and supported the Hornsea Golf Club Junior Fundraising Am Am on Sunday. It was great to see so many teams enter again this year. There were 26 in total for the 9am shotgun start. What a fantastic day for golf it was too. I don’t think I can ever remember a day towards the end of October with so many people wearing t-shirts. I was expecting some really great scores with the conditions being so good and I wasn’t wrong. The prize winners were as follows: Nearest the pin 7th – Nicky Salzl Nearest the pin 12th – Paul Lockwood Jnr Nearest the pin 17th – Paul Sharp 1st £50 each – 87pts C Farr, D Clark, L Walby, C Cunningham 2nd £40 each – 86pts K Hilton, M Young, S Hilton, J Young 3rd £30 each – 85pts N Salzl, J Elder, W Lockwood, S Howell 4th £20 each – 84pts L Gawley, T Brodley, R Brown, J Palmer 5th 10 each – 83pts T Walker, W Smith, L Addinall, B Carter
Can I also thank the clubs that donated fourball vouchers and Dean Windass for the Hull City shirt. With these auction prizes and with what the Am Am made, the total raised on the day was £1,133 - so many thanks to you all. This really does go a long way in helping our Juniors at Hornsea progress.

Open for anyone to sign up to, the campaign includes a weekly email written by our in-house Rules experts, and includes explanations, reasoning, videos and a quiz to test your new-found knowledge. Within moments of launching the campaign, we were contacted by a number of clubs across England asking how they can distribute the information to their members and get them involved. So, by popular demand, we've created a simple link for you to circulate to your members, encouraging them to sign-up and prepare for the changes. A wet old week in Spain which made following this week a little difficult and it is not often the events finish on a Monday. David Maxey though has extended his overall lead as he topped the weekly standings with a fantastic score. I continue to slide in the wrong direction but I have not given up yet! |

The Latest News Well, last Wednesday saw the conclusion of the Seniors Board Competition with the Don White Trophy being competed for. Judging by the scores that came in, it was a pretty close event. The final winners were Dave Miller and Barry Bedford. Well done to them both and I believe this is David’s third win this year having already won the EGGS Cup and Presidents Cup. This year has been a strange year dictated to by the weather. We started off with rain, and then more rain culminating with having to cancel the Easter Open, hours spent notifying visitors and promising refunds. Fortunately, about 20 players decided to decline a refund and put their names down for the Winter Open. This as you may realise impacts on our funds. However, the Winter Open was well attended and we had many compliments about the course and the organisation of the event. Hornsea were well represented among the winners. Peter Bridges completed his term of office and I can say what a pleasure it was to work with him.
Our AGM was held and many topics debated. In respect of elected officials they are as follows; on this note, Peter Bridges in view of there being nobody being nominated to take over from him as Captain proposed that I take over. I was honoured for that and was unanimously elected. Also again as Secretary. I would like to appeal to some of eligible members aged 55+ come and join the Seniors. We need your support. Get in touch with me and you will be welcomed. Regards Gordon McGlynn Hornsea Seniors Captain/Secretary
Can I just congratulate the Hornsea Seniors for retaining the Alliance Trophy (Spoon) for third year running. The team was Gordon McGlynn, Malcolm Hester, Ray McKie and Ron Wainman.

Lindsay and Darrell Working Hard Again On Monday morning, Lindsay Ward And Darrell Slingsby were busy again this time weeding the path around the back of the 11th green. Hard work with only two of them as all of the other helpers were away or golfing, so this area isn’t completed but a good start has been made. They really are doing a great job though on improving areas the greens staff just do not have time to get too. Please, if you are able and have some spare time get in touch with Lindsay as I know he still has other jobs that need doing.

Pictures From The Course So, it is not a picture but a video of Dougie Griebenouw playing his second shot to the 14th on Saturday. What a recovery shot it was too as he made his par. I loved the way he looked straight back in amazement as it obviously somehow missed everything! Click here to watch video.

How about these two fantastic pictures taken by our Vice Captain Dave Blanchard whilst he was playing this morning. Both stunning pictures. |
Greens I am sure those of you that have played will have noticed the leylandii tree’s around the halfway house have been taken down. From the size of them, it is quite lucky that one hasn’t fallen and flattened the halfway house. This area over the winter will be getting a new look with different things getting planted. We are also looking at getting a working party together to give the halfway house a bit of a makeover. Please let me know if you are interested in helping. We have had a digger in this week working on the 8th pond. Amazing how much debris was removed and this will look much better once it has all settled down. All this along with the usual daily course set up, the continuation of verti-draining the fairways and the three hours each morning of clearing the never ending leaf fall!
